HENTHORN, Joanne Ernestine, 78, of Sistersville, WV, died on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Judges Assisted Living Facility.

She was born on February 24, 1935 in Spring Valley, Arkansas.

Joanne was a retired cook for Sistersville Middle School and Boreman Elementary. She was a longtime member of the Paden City Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and enjoyed her time in service with her fellow Witnesses.

Joanne will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother and will be deeply missed by her family.

Joanne is survived by her sons, Michael E. (Lois) Henthorn of Middlebourne, WV, Gerald L. Henthorn of Milford, NE, and Timothy J. (Terri) Henthorn Jacksonville, FL; her grandchildren, Michael C. Henthorn, Jason L. Henthorn, Cherika L. Vaughn, Christa M. Nash, Teya N. Henthorn, Jeremy L. Henthorn, Joseph D. Henthorn, and Chelsea L. Henthorn; great-grandchildren, Noah Henthorn, Emmarie Henthorn, Kaytyln Henthorn, Jonathan Henthorn, Jasmine Henthorn, Manowah Vaughn, Lucah Vaughn, Abagayle Nash, Raustin Wade, and Tiauna Mathis.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Bertie Grace Roles; and daughter, Alisa A. Bassett.

Services will be Friday, March 29, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Myers Funeral Home, Sistersville, WV with Bro. Steve Merritt officiating.

Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

OBITUARY:
Elmond LeMoyne Coffield, M.D., 87, died on February 10, 2011, surrounded by his loving family and in the caring hands of the staff and professionals at Wetzel County Hospital, where he cared for his patients for 48 years.

Dr. Coffield was born on November 19, 1923, on Coffield Ridge in Wetzel County, West Virginia. He was the son of Susan Austie (Yoho) Coffield and Albert Lee Coffield, M.D. and the brother of Olan Terrell Coffield, M.D. He married Colleen Frost (Harris) Coffield of Bannock, Ohio on October 22, 1950.

Dr. Coffield graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from West Virginia University in 1943, a Bachelor of Science from West Virginia University Medical School in 1945, and a Medical Doctorate from the Medical College of Virginia in 1947. He did his medical and anesthesia residency at Ohio Valley General Hospital from 1947-1950.

Dr. Coffield joined his brother, Dr. Terrell Coffield, and began practicing family medicine in New Martinsville on July 1, 1950. Dr. Coffield, his brother, and their father Dr. Albert Lee Coffield provided health care to generations of Wetzel County families. It is estimated that Dr. Coffield and his brother delivered over 4,000 babies during the 30 years they offered obstetrical services as a part of their family practice. Dr. Coffield and his brother were health care innovators by adding a medical office pharmacy and the first drive through pharmacy service in conjunction with Harman’s Drug Store. He provided occupational medicine and served as the first plant physician at the New Martinsville Bayer facility (Mobay Chemical) from 1955-1998.

Dr. Coffield was inducted into the United States Army on December 18, 1943, and reported to duty at West Virginia University in the Army Specialized Training Program which trained physicians for military service. He was transferred to the Medical College of Virginia and was discharged on March 23, 1946. During the Korean War, Dr. Coffield served in the United States Army Medical Corp as a First Lieutenant and was stationed at Fort Bragg Army Hospital and Fort Knox Army Hospital from 1951-1953 where he served as an anesthesiologist.

Dr. Coffield is survived by his five children, Jennifer Coffield Tobin (Thomas J. Tobin), Rebecca Coffield Moore (Charles Thomas Moore, Jr.), Melinda Coffield Herrick, Colette Coffield Goddard (Aaron Goddard), and Robert LeMoyne Coffield (Susanne M. Coffield). He loved his twelve grandchildren: Chad Tobin, Dylan Tobin, Spencer Tobin, Thomas Moore, Evan Moore, Whitney Herrick Bacalman, Paul Herrick, Maggie Herrick, Taylor Goddard, Sean Goddard, Daniel Coffield, and Rachel Coffield. He also loved Goldie, his loyal yellow lab. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other Coffield and Harris relatives, neighbors, and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Colleen Frost (Harris) Coffield, who died on July 14, 1978.

Dr. Coffield was a member of the First Christian Church and one of the founding members of the Wetzel County Historical Society Museum. As a member of the Court Restaurant “lunch bunch,” Dr. Coffield was a wonderful storyteller and Wetzel County historian.

Visitation will be held at Grisell Funeral Home in New Martinsville on Saturday, February 12, 2011, from 6pm to 8pm and Sunday, February 13, 2011, from 12am to 3pm and 6pm to 9pm. His funeral service will be held Monday, February 14, 2011, at 11am at First Christian Church in New Martinsville, followed by internment at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Goddard Cemetery

Goddard Cemetery

There are two Goddard Cemeteries in Wetzel county, West Virginia. They are usually confusingly known as Goddard Cemetery. Linda (Goddard) Stout, to reduce confusion, calls one of them the Old Goddard Cemetery and the other the New Goddard Cemetery. The two cemeteries are located in the same area. In fact, Route 89 divides the fields in which the two cemeteries lie.

The Old Goddard Cemetery is located at the upper end of a meadow (now wooded) which was originally part of the old Goddard homestead. The land, is probably owned, as of 2002, by Clyde and Lisa (Kocher) Stillion. Lisa is a granddaughter of Woodrow Garner. She is the daughter of Eldon and Ardith (Garner) Kocher.

The New Goddard Cemetery is located about 1/4 mile out Nicely Ridge on the property of Linda Stout's uncle, Robert "Bob" Allen Goddard.

OBITUARY: Mrs. Nancy Garner Called to Her Reward
Mrs. Nancy J. Garner departed this life at the home of her son Albert, near Proctor, March 30, 1923, at the age of 84 years. Mrs. Garner was born on Rine's Ridge, in Marshall county, July 9, 1839, and during her entire life, with the exception of three years spent in Iowa, she was a resident of Marshall or Wetzel county.

In 1859 [sic, 2 Dec 1858] she was married to William Kelley,and to this union were born five children: Mrs. T. J. and Mrs. J. P. Cooper of near Proctor; E. F. Kelley of New Dale; and Mrs. Wilford Furbee and Jesse Kelley, the last two of whom preceded her in death.

In 1867 Mr. Kelley died and two years later she was united in marriage to Henry Garner, one of Wetzel county's most progressive citizens. To this union were born four children: Albert Garner, who at the present time is a member of the County Court of Wetzel county, and Friend, Peter and Thomas, the last three of whom have preceded her to the grave.

Besides her son Albert, one step-son, Mr. Wilford Garner of Moundsville, survives.

Mr. Garner died in 1901 and since that time she has resided with her son Albert.

At the time of her death, she could boast of 31 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

At the age of 17 she accepted Christ and was baptised at the mouth of Whetstone Creek by Rev. John Henderson. During all these 67 years she has been true to this great confession and has devoted her life unselfishly to the service of her fellow beings. In speaking of her a friend remarked that she was one of the best women that ever lived, and this estimate of her life and character seems to be held by all who knew her, and was evidenced by the great number who flocked to the home and church to pay their respects to the one whom they had come to regard so highly.

Her death was due to complications following an attack of pneumonia.

The funeral services were held at Antioch Church, Monday afternoon by Rev. J. F. Jamison of Webster Springs and interment was made in Antioch Cemetery by Funeral Director Everett Mason. Active pall bearers representing her own children's families were William Cooper, Milo Cooper, George Cooper, Jesse Kelley, William Kelley, and Samuel Furbee. Honorary pall bearers, representing her step-children's families were Clarence Garner of Moundsville, Elmer Coffield of New Martinsville, Thomas Shirk of Columbus, Ohio, Wilford Parsons of Moundsville, Joseph Parsons of Proctor and Hays Hall of Proctor. OBITUARY: The death of Jason Parsons is felt as a personal loss by many people who were not related to him. At the age of 91 years he took an active interest in life and until but a few weeksago was making his usual rounds of visiting children and other friends in this state and Ohio. Keeping friends with old and young always seemed to be more to him that acquiring honors in public life or adding to his worldly goods.

Correct living, industry and intelligence had enabled Mr. Parsons to spend his old age in any manner he chose without being hampered for finances and he lived by mingling among his friends. He never proffered advice but it was often sought. Neither did he push himself forward to hold office, yet for more than thirty years in his active years he was retained in the office of justice of the peace, a community accommodation, and there were but few cases that he could not get the parties to compose their differences without resorting to law.

Probably Mr. Parsons was the last survivor in Marshall county who had been a member of the county court when that body was composed of the justices of the peace.

When agitation for a bridge across the mouth of Fish creek began and the most feasible location for bridges of that day was Graysville, Mr. Parsons was instrumental in having the proper road connections built to that riffle before the matter went further.

Previous to that bridge when Fish creek could not be forded the only way to get to the county seat from below the creek was by steamboat.

Within the last twelve months three lifelong companions have died in that community. They were born in the same year in that neighborhood, George A. Smith, Robert Coffield and Jason Parsons, they spent their lives on farms that joined and died within a few months of each other.

Two years ago George Parsons had a reunion of the Parsons relationship at his farm at Pioneer and Mr. Smith and Mr. Coffield as well as this father Mr. Parsons were present.

Another interesting fact in the life of Jason Parsons was the he and his brother Israel and his cousin James, married three of the Connelly sisters, Sarah M., Mary A. and Sophia, and the three families resided in the same neighborhood. (Source: undated clipping - furnished by Hugh L. Yoho)

According to Finnicum and Briggs: Israel Parsons died at Route 1, Woodland, Marshall Co., WV at the age of 68 years, 4 months, 2 days.


OBITUARY: Israel Parsons of Franklin District, Marshall Co., WV, died at his home near Pioneer on 28 Sep 1919 at the age of 77. He lived within two miles of where he died all of his life. His parents came to this vicinity when there was not a clearing in sight of their home and raised seven children.

One brother, Jason Parsons of Glen Dale, WV, and two sisters, Mrs. Anabel Monroe and Mrs. Retta Smith, survive. He leaves four children, Mrs. Stella McHenry, Mrs. Retta McKimmie, Joseph Parsons and Mrs. Ida Henry, also his widow, Mrs. Mary A. Parsons.

OBITUARY: David W. Thompson: Dies after long illness, prominent in lumber business

Another of the old timers of this community has gone to his rest; David died at the home of his son Grant in this village last Tuesday evening, after a long illness. The funeral will be held at Boyne Fall[s] either today or tomorrow. At the time we go to press the arrangement had not all been made. Mr. Thompson was taken ill about four years ago, since which time he has suffered a great deal. He was stricken by a stroke of apoplexy last JUly and gradually failed. Last November in the hopes he could be benefited by treatment he was taken to Alpena where he remained until a week ago last Sunday, when he was brought to the home of his son here, where he has gradually failed until death came to relieve him of his suffering.

David W. Thompson was born December 21, 1856 at Fredericksburg, Ohio. When a young man, he moved to West Virginia where he married Margaret Baker in 1878. To this union four children were born, one whom died in early childhood. In 1882 they moved to Boyne Falls and since that time have made northern Michigan their home the greater part of the time. In March 1904 he moved his family to Atlanta where he has since engaged in the lumber business as a timber looker and estimator.

He was baptized in the Christian Church at Elsie, Michigan, and has always been a consistent Christian.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret Thompson, three children, David F. Thompson of Cadillac, Mrs. Della Beam of Alpena, and Grant of Atlanta. Six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Two brothers, E.W. Thompson of Port Huron and Charles Thompson of Detroit, and eight sisters, Mrs. Mary F. Fluhart of Highmore, South Dakota, Mrs. Elsie Green of Ashley, Michigan, Mrs. Herman Kunert of Newberry, Mrs. Frank Stewart of Boyne Falls, Mrs. Lora Burrows of Harbor Springs, Mrs. Ernest Pheleps of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Charles Horn of Chicago, and Mrs. Lewis Ward of Stoney Creek, New York.

Mr. Thompson was well known through[out] Northern Michigan particularly in the timber business. He was always recognized as a very honorable and up right man whom it was a pleasure to know; and in passing it can be recorded that another of the pioneers who helped carve from the wilderness of this country, homes for themselves and their children has gone to his just reward. The community will join with his immediate relatives in mourning his demise, but will feel that the world has been better for his presence.

The funeral will be held at Boyne Falls Saturday morning at 10:30.

BIOGRAPHY:
James Miller Rine, son of George and Elizabeth Miller Rine was born on Games Ridge, Marshall Co., VA, October 4, 1856 and died March 21, 1928, aged 72 years. He was a member of a large pioneer family, mostly German descent. He was married to Mary B. Wellman, Sept. 1, 1878. They went to house-keeping on her father's farm where they lived for several years. Then he moved to Wells, 7 miles from Cameron and near Fish Creek.

He received his education in the public schools of Marshall county. Late in life he attended 4 semesters at West Liberty College. He began teaching at the age of 22. The first school was Mountain Hill, which was quite a distance from where they lived, but he made the trip every day. He continued teaching for over 50 years, with the exception of 4 years he was elected County Supt. of Schools. Also, one fal he contracted typhoid fever and missed teaching that year. He taught several terms of summer school and also finished a term of school at Garrett Station, which is now Woodruff. The teacher, Everett Criswell died before the end of the term.

He was a close student of the Bible and became a Gospel preacher and preached on Lord's Days for many years.

In 1918, when Mr. Scott Powell had the History of Marshall County written, through the influence of Walter R.A. Morris, a very bright energetic young lawyer, they had trouble in getting it published. It had taken sometime to get it written and Mr. Morris had died of influenza; so the matter of getting it published remained a matter of uncertainty, till in the early days of autum 1924 when J.M. Rine took up the matter and decided to fill the place left vacant by Mr. Morris; - and to him and his unbounded energy rests the credit of having it published after 4 years of disappointments to the writer.

He taught the Big Run School and he related at one term, he had 21 Mathews's and there were three Mary Mathews's. In 1904 he removed the family to Bowman Ridge, near Glen Easton, and died on the home place in 1928. OBITUARY: J.M. Rine Expires at Farm Home - Veteran Teacher and Revered Citizen Closes Career.
James Miller Ryan [sic], one of Marshall county's most widely known and revered citizens, died last evening at 10 o'clock in his farm home on Bowman Ridge, near Glen Easton following an illness and pneumonia.

Death closed a most useful career in the passing of Mr. Rine. He was a life-long resident of Marshall county, and devoted almost a half century to teaching rural schools.

He was a minister in the Church of Christ, and often conducted services in churches of that denomination about the county. At one time Mr. Rine's warm interest in the education of the county's youth was recognized by the voters, and he was elected to the post of county superintendent of schools, serving one term.

Only recently the Marshall County Teachers Institute paid tribute to Mr. Rine as a veteran school teacher, and he was declared to be the only educator in the county holding the distinction of having taught pupils in three generations of some families in the county. His last work as a school teacher was done at Gorby school, Meade district.

Mr. Rine's interest in county affairs extended into the city of Moundsville, and he was a stockholder and director in both the Marshall County Band the the City & County Bank.

Born in Franklin District

James Miller Rine was in his seventy-second year. He was born on Rine's Ridge, Franklin district on October 4, 1856, the son of the late George Rine and Elizabeth Miller Rine. He received his early education in the common schools of that district, but was ever striving for further knowledge, and only a few years ago enrolled at West Liberty state normal school for a summer course.

Mr. Rine is survived by his wife, Mary B. Wellman Rine, three sons, Roscoe, at home, Arthur, of Moundsville, and Otis, who resides on a farm adjoining the homestead farm on Bowman Ridge; five daughters, Mrs. Addie Heath, of Fork Ridge, Mrs. Lucy Conner, Mrs. Charles E. Cunningham, and Mrs. Clem Young, of Moundsville, and Mrs. Austa Holmes, of Cecil Ridge.

The following brothers and sisters also survive: Foster Rine, of Moundsville, Gilmore Rine, of Bowman Ridge, T.W. Rine of Long Beach, Washington, Mrs. Nancy Schaffer of Pittsburgh, Mrs. H.A. Fatal to Popular Citizen; Was War Veteran
Foster Lincoln Rine, 64, died Thursday night at six o'clock at his home on Short Center street. He had been ill for two years.

Mr. Rine was born and spent his entire life in Marshall county. He was instructor in Marshall county schools for forty years, and was a Spanish - American war veteran, being a member of Company M, First W.Va. Volunteers.

Mr. Rine represented Marshall county in the legislature in 1925 and 1926, being elected on the Republican ticket. He also served a number of years as a guard at the state penitentiary.

He was a member of Calvary M.E. church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Katherine Schultz Rine and the following eleven sons and daughters: John Rine, deputy U.S. clerk of Elkins; Mrs. Dorothy Brown, wife of Rev. Durward B. Brown of Gassaway, W.Va.; Lowell, Foster, Jr., Edison, Paul and Reed at home, and Misses Olive, Beulah, Lillian and Marjorie Rine, also at home; one brother, Theodore Rine, of Long Beach, a Washington, D.C. suburb [Note: The phrase, "a Washington, D.C. suburb," is probably an error. Theodore Rine lived at Long Beach in the state of Washington. REH]; and four sisters, Mrs. Nancy Schaffer of California; Mrs. Sarah Richmond, Glen Easton; Mrs. Phoebe Cox, Moundsville and Mrs. Alice Marshall, Wheeling.

The body was removed to the Lutes funeral home.

OBITUARY:
BLAKE, JOSEPH B. - A veteran of the Civil War and one of the oldest citizens of Wetzel county, died at his home in Proctor District on 16 Oct 1919 at the age of 83 years.

He was born 16 Feb 1837 near Rosby's Rock in Marshall Co, (W)VA.

He was united in marriage in Feb 1860 with Lydia Gorby at the age of 24 years. To this union fifteen children were born, eight sons and seven daughters.

Mrs. Blake died in 1887 at the age of 51 years.

Mr. Blake married Eliza Jane Coffield Goddard, widow of Harrison Goddard, on 29 Oct 1887. They had seven sons and one daughter.

Surviving besides his widow, Eliza, are nineteen children, 98 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Blake was a member of the Christian Church, joining at the age of 30 and being baptized by Rev. Anguish.

Joseph B. Blake served three years in the Civil War.

Funeral services were held at the Antioch Christian Church with Rev. Linkletter officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. (1837-1919)

With the death of ex-County Commissioner Hugh Kerr, which occurred at his home in this city, Saturday morning, there passed away a man of affairs, of wide influence and varied activity, who left his stamp upon the public affairs of the county in which most of his life was spent after his arrival at the years of manhood.

Mr. Kerr died at his home at the corner of Thirteenth and Quincy streets, at seven o'clock, Saturday morning, October 28, of organic heart trouble. Although he had been ill for several months, his death was not expected, as he had a number of sinking spells which preceded it and had rallied on previous occasions. It was hoped that he would do so this time, but toward morning, as he grew gradually weaker, the hope was reluctantly abandoned. The disease first manifested itself about the middle of last May, while Mr. Kerr was assisting his son, Raymond, with some work at Morgantown, where the later is employed as a civil engineer. He was seized, at that time with an attack which indicated a serious heart affection, and by the advice of the physician who attended him, Mr. Kerr returned at once to his home. Shortly afterward, he was almost entirely confined to the house and for the last few months of his illness hardly left it. Towards the last he was not able to be out at all. The decline, was gradual, with no perceptible turn for the worse, until Friday night.

C. Hugh Kerr was born at Newport, Ohio, August 14, 1849. He settled in this county twenty-five years ago and, fourteen years ago came to this city to live. Previous to that he had resided at Boreman, this county.

He was married, April 24, 1879 to Miss Lily Atkinson of Marietta, [OH], who survives him. The deceased leaves one son and two daughters, Raymond E. Kerr, now employed as a civil engineer on the Buckannon and Northern railroad, with headquarters at Morgantown; Lilliam B. Kerr and Bonnie E. Kerr, both at home. One brother and one sister survive, James Kerr of Newport, Ohio and Mrs. A.G. O'Bleness, of Marietta.

Mr. Kerr was interested all of his life in politics, was an active and successful worker and held a high place in the counsels of the Democratic party in this part of the state. He served one term as county commissioner, from January 1, 1903 to Dec. 31, 1908 during part of which he was president of that body. He was an excellent example of what such an official should be, being public-spirited, hard-working, with a keen eye to the public needs and to the best interests of the tax payers.

Previous to that, Mr. Kerr served for four years as deputy sheriff under Sheriff C.A. Wade -- from 1896 to 1900. He made as good a deputy sheriff as, later, a county commissioner. After his term as commissioner expired, the deceased was interested in a timber company with holdings in Kentucky, and spent about a year in that state, looking after his interests there.

As a business man, Mr. Kerr always possessed the confidence and trusts of his associates and the public as well, his probity being unquestioned and his word as good as his bond. No man in this community had more or stauncher friends and the news of his death has been heard with deep regret all over this county, in every part of which he was known and esteemed.

The funeral will take place Monday afternoon from the residence on Thirteenth street, with interment in the Odd Fellows cemetery. The exact hour has not yet been determined. Raymond Kerr will arrive here Saturday evening, and the other out of town relatives have been notified and will probably be here for the funeral.

OBITUARY: Hugh C. Kerr - A Prominent and Well Known Resident of the City and County Died This Morning
It was with sincere regret that the many friends of Hugh C. Kerr learned of his death, which occurred at seven o'clock this morning, at his home at 436 Thirteeth street, although his death was not unexpected, as he had been in failing health for the past year or more. The deceased was not only a prominent citizen of the city but was well known throughout the county by reason of his official and business career in the past.

Mr. Kerr was born at Newport, Ohio, August 14, 1849, and had been a resident of Wood county for about twenty-five years, and a resident of Parkersburg, [WV] for the past fourteen years, having moved his family here from Boreman, where he had been engagaed in farming for several years.

He is survived by his wife and three children, the latter being Raymond E. Kerr, of Morgantown, an engineer on the construction of the B&N. R.R.; and Misses Lillian B. and Bonnie E. Kerr, teachers in the public schools, who reside at the family home. He is also survived by one brother, Jas. Kerr, who resides at Newport, Ohio, and one sister, Mrs. A.G. O'Blenness, of Marietta.

The funeral will be held at the residence on Monday afternoon, and the interment will be at the Odd Fellows cemetery.

Mr. Kerr was prominent in the affairs of the county for a number of years. He was a deputy sheriff under Charles S. Wade, from 1896 to 1900 and was a member of the County Court from 1903 to 1909. He was a staunch Democrat, and took an active part in politics for a number of years, at one time being a member of the county committee.

In addition, Mr. Kerr was a member of the Royal Tribe of Joseph, a beneficial organization, of which he was a charter member, and was also a member of Blennerhassett Council, Royal Arcanum.

Mr. Kerr had the happy faculty of making friends with every one with whom he came in contact, was kind and genial and his friends were only limited by his acquaintanceship, and he knew almost everybody in the county. After his term as county commissioner he engaged in the timber business in Kentucky, but the venture, unfortunately, was unsuccessful, and he returned here, broken in health and spirits.

CEMETERY: Reuben Yoho and his wife, Emiline Mills Yoho, are buried in Carlisle, Noble Co., OH. The stones for them show that Reuben was born December 12, 1811 [sic, 1810] and died Sept. 3, 1901, [sic, 2 Sep 1900] and Emiline was born May 4, 1812 and died March 12, 1907. Also buried near them are two of their children, Margaret Ann, who died Oct. 22, 1867, aged 27 years, 11 days, and Lewis, who died Oct. 22, 1866, 27 years, 5 mos. 18 days. Therefore, Margaret Ann was born circa Oct. 11, 1840 and Lewis circa May 4, 1849. OBITUARY: Reuben P. Yoho
Reuben P. Yoho was born in Tyler county, W.Va., December 12, 1810, and died at his home on Jackson Ridge September 2d, 1900, thus arriving at the ripe old age of 90 years when death claimed him. He came with his parents to Monroe county when but three years old and has lived in the county ever since, except when Noble was formed, he was cut off in Noble and there resided until his removal to Jackson Ridge.

In 1836 he married Miss Emaline Mills, and to them were born 6 children, one son, Judge R.P. Yoho and two daughters Mrs. Emily Smith of Carlisle and Mrs. Sarah Shaffer of Bellville, W.Va., are still living.

Mr. Yoho was always an honest, conscientious farmer, a member of the Methodist church and generous to a fault.

OBITUARY: Death of Henry B. Yoho, A Highly Esteemed Farmer.
While alone at the new home of his son at Woodland [WV], Henry B. Yoho was stricken with apoplexy while in the yard Saturday afternoon probably near 4 o'clock. When he was found dead.

Mr. Yoho was 77 years of age. His wife died three years ago and the three children are all living, they being Francis V. Yoho, Mrs. Dr. J.W. Yeater of New Dale and Mrs. T.W. Crow of Fish Creek.

Interment occurred in the old homestead graveyard beside his wife. He recently expressed the desire that when death came that he be laid away beside his wife, in the same kind of a coffin and by the same minister and undertaker.

Mr. Yoho was the highest type of citizen. He spent a lifetime in this county and enjoyed the unbounded confidence and respect of all the people who ever knew him. (Source: unknown newspaper - furnished by Clarice Stanley)

COMMENT:
The first church was the Palestine Church [in the Marion, WV area] which first met in the home of Joseph Walker with Harrison Yoho preacher. Later at the other end of the settlement the Rockport Church was started at the foot of the Nicely Hill. At that time the road went past the Laurel Point Cemetery up the creek with several families living there.

BIOGRAPHY: Hardesty Extract

Harrison Yoho was a son of pioneer settlers of this district, and was born in Wetzel County, November 16, 1816. George and Jane (Hartley) Yoho were his parents, and he is a grandson of Henry Yoho, who was a contemporary of Lewis Wetzel, and the first settler in what is now Proctor District, Wetzel County, W.Va. Henry Yoho fought the Indians in Ohio County, Virginia (West), and all along the River. He and his wife were buried in this county, as was their son George, father of Harrison.

In Wetzel county, March 22, 1838, Harrison Yoho and Martha Goddard were married, and their children are four living and one deceased, namely:

Matilda, born January 20, 1839, married Wesley Garloch and lives in
this county;

Raliegh W., born May 24, 1840, married Jemima J. Laflen, and lives in
this district;

Henry H., born January 22, 1842, whose first wife was Margaret Goddard,
second wife, Mary E. Wade, with whom he is living in this district;

Joanna, born January 11, 1844, died in December 1848;

James B., born January 17, 1849 married Sarah A. Garloch and lives in
Belmont County, Ohio.

Mr. and Mrs. Yoho also adopted one child, Hannah E. Givens, born in 1859.

Twenty-three grandchildren have been born to Mr. & Mrs. Yoho, of whom nineteen are living, and they have one great-grandchild.

Harrison Yoho was ordained to the ministry in the Church of the Disciples, as elder, in November 1857, commencing to preach at that time. In all the subsequent years his labors have been owned and blessed, and he is now the oldest minister of that faith in Wetzel County. He has a farm in Proctor District and receives his mail at Halls Mills, Wetzel County, West Virginia.

According to Joanne (Pauley) Kelley: Harrison Yoho rode circuit with Alexander Campbell, who started the restoration movement in the Presbyterian Church. There were called the Church of the Disciples, but later it was believed that Campbell went too far, and those that didn't believe as he did became the Church of Christ. Among these were H. Yoho.

OBITUARY:
On April 4, 1895, at the home of his son Henry, the goodly spirit of Bro. Harrison Yoho was released from this world for its bright home in heaven, having reached the 81st. year of his age. He was born and raised in Wetzel County, W.Va. and died near the place of his birth.

His Christian wife was 74 years old at the time of her death, whose spirit preceded his to the spirit land about five months. Their family consisted of five children- three sons and two daughters, one of the latter having also passed over the river, only to welcome the father and mother into their celestial home in heaven. The rest remain to mourn their loss. But they had the pleasure before they left this world of seeing all their children obey the call of their Master, and become members of the one body.

Bro. Yoho had been a preacher of the gospel of Christ for over fifty years, and was widely known and tenderly loved by his brethren, and was held in high esteem by the world, as a worthy godly man. As a preacher he was like the apostle Paul; he determined to know nothing but Christ, and him crucified. He was always ready at any call, day or night to go. He never kept any memoranda of his work, but we are safe in saying that those who were made to rejoice in a Savior's love under his preaching would run up into the thousands, having organized the greater number of the congregations in this and adjoining counties.

The writer conducted the funeral services in the presence of a host of sorrowing friends and relatives. His remains were interred in Antioch cemetery by the side of his beloved companion, there to await the sounding of the last trumpet when the dead in Christ shall rise first to receive a crown of righteousness.

Jan. 1, 1945 to 1953; W.Va. Midland Corp. 1945 to 1957; the Ohio River Co., 1957 to 1966. Midland Enterprises Inc. Central Midland Coal Co. Inc. and Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates of Boston, Mass; also worked in the coal fields of Kentucky and Southeast Ohio.

EDUCATION: Moundsville, WV, public school, Philippi High School, graduated May 1926. Attended Alderson-Broaddus College, Philippi, studied bookkeeping; LaSalle Extension University

ORGANIZATIONS: He was a member and Past Master of Elkins Lodge 108 AF&AM, Past High Priest of Elkins Royal Arch.

PUBLIC_SERVICE: During WWII, for 30 months, he wrote letters that were sent out monthly to 1,000 servicement and women. While troops were being trained in the mountains around Elkins, [WV], he established contact with Masons and cooked meals twice a week for them.

HONORS: He was selected outstanding citizen during the Lewis Co., West Virginia Centennial; listed in "Personalities of the South," 1968-1969 edition; the "Congressional Record," for 26 Feb 1968 carries a two column entry by Senator Jennings Randolph, telling of his activities on behalf of "the mountain state."

John W. Rine Dies Last Friday While Visiting Daughter, Buried in Philippi

John W. Rine, 73, a resident of 703 Lynn Avenue, Weston, and a former resident of Philippi, died at 6 a.m., Friday, February 25, 1977, while visiting at the home of his daughter in Salem, Ohio. His death was unexpected.

Mr. Rine was known throughout the country as West Virginia's "Good Will Ambassador," a title affectionately afforded him for his outstanding promotion of the state and its scenic beauty. He had been featured in articles in 14 daily and weekly newspapers in West Virginia. His articles had also appeared in 10 newspapers in South Dakota.

He had prints of historical and nature study which he sent to people throughtout the United States. He had compiled a slide presentation that had been shown in five states. He had made more that 100 appearances in clubs, lodges, schools and other organizations, three television appearances and 32 radio broadcasts promoting West Virginia.

He had received many honors from the citizens of Lewis County, in which he made his home, as well as being appointed a general by former Govenor Hulett C. Smith, and was presented Distinguished Citizenship Award from former Governor Arch A. Moore. He received the Order of the White Buffalo from the governor of South Dakota. The State Department of Natural Resources cited him for outstanding service to the state and in particular for being responsible for 3,000 subscriptions to the magazine "Wild, Wonderful West Virginia," published by the department.

He received the Merit Award from the Black Hills Badlands and Lakes Association for unusual contributions to South Dakota tourism in that state. He was honored many times in various organizations for contributions and outstanding services.

In 1964, the Marshall County, [WV] native wrote the "Little Old Train That Talks With Boys and Girls," a story about the Cass scenic railroad, written especially for children. Several thousand copies of this publication, along with many other articles, humorous stories and pictures were distributed to another group of Mr. Rine's favorite people, the patients in the Shrine Hospitals for crippled and burned children in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

He sent more than 200,000 pieces of literature to the VA Hospitals, senior citizen centers, rest homes, shut-ins and the elderly. More than 25,000 known recipes of West Virginia were sent throughout the United States. For six years he financed and operated the West Virginia Room in Weston, as both a museum and distribution point to further promote West Virginia.

During World War II, he published 40 letters over a period of 30 months, sending 1,200 copies per issue to servicement in the various theaters of operation.

John W. Rine was born in Marshall County, February 26, 1903, a son of the late Foster and Kathryn Rine. On June 1, 1926, he was married to Edna Roach, of Philippi, who survives.

Also are one daughter, Mrs. John (Mary Margaret) Christy, Salem, Ohio; one son Major William D. Rine, serving with the U.S. Air Force; four brothers, Foster Rine, Lowell Rine, and Reed Rine, all of Glendale, and Edison Rine, Wellsburg; five sisters, Mrs. Stanley Wilson, Beaver, Pa., Mrs. Durwood [sic] Brown, Warwood, Mrs. Beulah Barnes, Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Rolland Percival, Palm Springs, Calif., and Miss Lillian Rine; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son and one brother.

Mr. Rine was a member of the St. Matthew UM Church at Weston, [WV]; a member and past master of Elkins Lodge No. 108, AF&AM, Elkins, member and high priest of Elkins Chapter No. 35, Royal Arch Masons, Elkins; a past district deputy grand master, Grand Lodge of West Virginia, AF&FM, and a trustee, of State of West Virginia.

Mr. and Mrs. Rine had lived in Philippi, Belington, and Elkins, and presently were living in Weston. He retired in 1968 from the West Virginia Coal and Coke Corporation and the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation as a tax agent.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 1, from the Floyd Funeral Home in Weston, at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Robert Chandler officiating. Interment followed in the Philippi Masonic Cemetery.

Henry Baker an aged well know citizen of Alma, Tyler County, West Virginia died at his home of old age. He was born in Monroe Co., Ohio on 11 Oct 1822. In May 1843, he married Miss H.J. Hall and to this union twelve children were born:

OBITUARY:
Albert Garner, retired businessman and farmer of Rt. ?, Proctor, WV, passed away in the Wetzel County Hospital at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday [13 Jun 1962] after a one week illness.

He was a former director of the First National Bank, a former vice president and director of New Martinsville Grocery Co., member of the Farm Bureau Association and served Wetzel County as County Commissioner for six years. He was a member of the Antioch Christian Church.

He was born at Proctor, April 30, 1878, a son of Henry and Nancy Jane Parsons Garner and lived his entire life in that community.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jane Goddard Garner, in 1958 and a son, Woodrow, in 1960.

He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. J. Clifford Briner, of West Lafayett, Ohio; Miss Mildred Garner of Pittsburgh, PA and Mary Lawrence Garner of Proctor, Rt. 1, and Mrs. Harry Lantz of New Martinsville, 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren.
