OBITUARY:
NEW PHILADELPHIA, [OH] -- Clarence M. Watson, 61, founder and general manager of the Lockport Hatchery here,  died at 5 P.M. Monday at the Torgler Nursing Home after six months illness.

He leaves his widow, four sons, James, Robert, Walter, and Richard, of this place; two daughters, Mrs. Paul Watkins, New Philadelphia and Mrs. Phillip Mardis, Newcomerstown; his mother, Mrs. I.V. Wilson, Byesville; two sisters, Mrs. Don Snider, Uhrichsville and Mrs. Vivan Hutton, Atlanta, Ga.; one half-sister, Mrs. Emma Donahue, Akron. Mr. Watson was twice married.

The body has been removed to the Evans Funeral Home where services will be conducted Thursday at 2 P.M. by Elder John D. Carlile. Burial will be made in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday evening after 7 o'clock and on Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M.

RECOLLECTIONS: Watson Bros. Construction, Inc.
In the early sixty's three brothers had that same burning desire to be in business for themselves just as their father, Clarence Watson, experienced in the late thirty's.  Robert, Walk and Dick Watson were hanging aluminum siding for a firm in Canton when Dick, who had carpentry experience, decided to build an Albee Home.  Albee was a company which sold pre-cut homes.  Upon completion it was agreed that they would be involved in the construction of the Albee homes sold in the immediate area.  During 1961 they completed two more Albees. In between homes they were involved in home construction related work.

In 1962 they began building homes at various locations on their own.  During this time they were also building a reputation for quality work.  In 1962 they purchased 7.43 acres of land from Herman Prysi located on the south side of New Philadelphia, OH. The amount of $52,600 was borrowed to cover the cost of land (Approx. $12,500) and development of streets, sewer and water lines.  The land transfer was recorded 29 Dec 1962, Volume 419, page 653, at the Tuscarawas County Courthouse.

It was at this time that the company, "Watson Bros. Construction, Inc. was formed.  Dick became president of the company, while Walt assumed the role of vice-president and Robert secretary.

During the course of construction of these homes, in collaboration with the Ohio Power Co., it soon developed into an all electric development.  The homes were known as Gold Medallion homes.

As development of the site was moving to completion (23 homes) efforts were being made to obtain more land.  As luck would have it they were able to obtain an additional 86 1/2 acres located approximately a city block south of their original purchase.  The land was obtained from Lockie Prysi and her three daughters at a cost of $100,000.  The land transfer is recorded on page 879 of Vol. 439 located in the Tuscarawas county courthouse.

Again, in conjunction with the Ohio Power Co., homes were to be all electric homes with all utilities to be installed underground.  It is believed that this was the first complete underground service development in the state of Ohio. It gained recognition through an electric ad in a national publication.  The allotment would contain 360+ homes with a recreation area in the center consisting of tennis courts, a swimming pool and green space for outdoor activities.

The home construction business was proceeding along smoothly with the first parcel of 20.2 acres being annexed to the city on 14 Apr 1975.  But as luck would have it interest rates began a slow climb and over a period of years continued to rise until it became prohibitive for the ordinary person to borrow money to purchase a new home.  Because of extremely high interest rates (nobody was purchasing new homes) the brothers in the early 1980's were forced to give up the project before its completion.

In only a few short years interest rates returned to a more normal level and homes again began to spring up and eventually (although not all electric) all lots were filled and the dream completed.  Watson Bros. were the forerunners of the many housing developments that have sprung up throughout the city and especially on the south side of New Philadelphia.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Pisgah church, near Fairview, [OH], for John B. Watson, 84, who died suddenly Friday morning [Abt. 20 Apr 1956] at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Carman of Quaker City R.D. 2. Services were conducted by Rev. Robert Zinsmesiter of Quaker City and interment was made at the church cemetery;.

Mr. Watson was born in Noble county Dec. 23, 1871, a son of Yoho and Mary Ann Watson.

The deceased is survived by five sons: Dewey, George and Raymond all of Akron; Fred of Salesville, R.D. and Herman of Quaker City, R.D.; four daughters: Verna of Akron, Mrs. Dessie Gray and Mrs. Mary Carman, Quaker City, R.D., and Mrs. Ada Johnson of Fairview; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Maude Starr of Middlebourne and one brother, Forrest Watson of Cambridge.

His wife, Jane DeMent Watson preceded him in death September 15, 1948.

OBITUARY: Services Friday at Caldwell for Raymond Watson Funeral services will be held Friday at Murphy Funeral Home, Caldwell, [OH], for Raymond H. Watson, 83, who died Wednesday, April 26 [1972] in Bethesda Hospital, Zanesville, [OH], following an illness.

Formerly of Noble County, he was a retired school teacher and merchant. The son of George and Sarah Mendenhall Watson, he was born June 29, 1888 in Noble County.

Mr. Watson was a member of the Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his widow, Birdie; a son, James Watson of Caldwell; five grandchildren.

A son, Hubert, three brothers and a sister are deceased.

Rev. James L. Mason of Zanesville and Rev. Marshall Peterson will officiate at the funeral and burial will be in Friends Cemetery at Quaker City.

OBITUARY:
George W. Watson, son of David and Charlotte Watson, was born in Seneca township, Noble county, Ohio, Oct. 22, 1850, and died March 9, 1909, aged 58 years, 4 months and 16 days.

He was united in marriage to Sarah I. Mendenhall, Feb. 20, 1873. To this union were born five children, David A. and Clark H. of Senecaville, Howard A., of Kennonsburg, Maggie, wife of Charles H. Bates and Raymond H., who resides with is widowed mother.

He united with the Coen's M.E. church in 1882, under the pastorate of Rev. J.W. Satterthwaite and remained a consistent member of the same till death.

His last suffering was intense but he bore it all with Christian fortitude.

He leaves a wife, four sons, one daughter, nine brothers, one sister and many friends to mourn his departure. By his death the family loses a loving father and husband, the church a consistent member and the community a noble citizen.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ross Sullivan at the Coen's M.E. church. Interment in the cemetery nearby. FRIEND.

In the Name of God Amen Know all Men by these Presents that I
David Watson of Frederick County and Province of Maryland
Farmer, being weak in Body but of sound Mind and memory;
revoking all former Wills by me heretofore made, do make this
my Last Will and Testament in manner and Form following. Imprimis
I leave and bequeath to my son John Wattson five pounds
Sterling. Item to my son George Wattson five pounds Sterling.
Item To my Daughter Mary Fugate five pounds Sterling which
several Legacies are to be paid to the Respective Legates
Provided the Lands I expect to hold become my property, and
not otherwise, Likewise it is my Desire and full Intention that
M. Henry Hall Convey to my Daughter Mary Fugate and her Heirs
One hundred and Sixty five acres of Land including the Houses and
Cultivated Lands and Spring whereon She now Dwelleth, which
said Lands are part of the Thousand Acres Sold to Michael
Miller. Item I leave to my Daughter Mary all that quantity of
Land which George Coler stands obligated to make over to me or

Watson, Cleo Ethel

NEW PHILADELPHIA [OH] ---Funeral services for Mrs. Cleo Ethel Watson, 55, 859 Second St., this city, a native of Belle Valley, will be conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday at the Toland-Evans Funeral Home by Rev. H.C. Heinlein. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. Watson, whose husband Clarence, operates the Lockport hatchery, died at 9:45 Thursday at the Shady Rest nursing home here after a three months illness.

She was born Jan. 22, 1894, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. McCune. For many years she lived in this community and was a member of the Broadway Methodist Church and of its Ladies Sunday school class.

Besides her husband, she leaves, four sons, James, Robert and Walter of New Philadelphia, and Richard of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Paul Watkins, New Philadelphia and Mrs. Richard Whiting of Tuscarawas; four brothers, Orville McCune of Wooster, Thomas and Owen McCune of Belle Valley and Dewey McCune of Cumberland; one sister, Mrs. Edward Hannum, Caldwell; four grandsons, three granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews.

The body has been taken to the funeral home where friends may call after 7 P.M. Friday and on Saturday in the afternoon from 2 to 4 and in the evening from 7 to 9 P.M.
