Ada M. Root, 69, 7972 Burbank Road, Wooster, OH, died Thursday, November 10, 1994 at her residence.  She was born in Cameron on September 20, 1925 of John D. and Alice Jane Bouchner (?) Henthorn.

She was a past member of the Cameron Church of Christ.

Preceding her in death beside her parents was her first husband, James A. Pittman, and sister, Sarah Atkinson.

She is survived by her husband, Charles; two sons, James P. Pittman, Rittman, and Dennis L. Pittman, Wooster, OH; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Ray Henthorn, Shadyside, and Paul Henthorn of Woodsfield.

Friends visited at Johnston-Schlabach Funeral Home at Shreve, OH on Saturday, Nov. 12, 1994 where services were held Sunday afternoon with Rev. Ray Headings officiating.  Burial followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Shreve, OH.

John A. [Adam] Decker, aged 76, a retired farmer, passed away at his home [Monroe Co., OH] Saturday evening [20 Jun 1936] following an illness of a few weeks due to cancer.

He was a son of the late Jacob and Cynthia [(Truax)] Decker, pioneer residents and had spent his entire life in this community. For several years he resided on the Belmont Ridge road, where he was an extensive fruit grower and was commonly known as "Peach" John.

He was a member of the Beallsville Church of Christ and Men's Sunday School class.

His first wife, Mrs. Amanda [Jane] Mellott Decker passed away in 1923 [16 Sep 1923, Monroe Co., OH].  Their ten children survive as follows:

Charles Wilbur Hannahs, 83, died Saturday morning,  January 12, 1957 at his home, 304 South Broadway,  Barnesville [Belmont Co., OH].

Born in Monroe County [OH] on June 17, 1873, he was the son of John and Elizabeth Stevens Hannahs.

His wife, [married, 7 Oct 1895 in Calais, Monroe Co., OH] Laura Belle Carpenter Hannahs, preceded in death in 1951 [24 Sep 1951, Barnesville, Belmont Co., OH].

Surviving are one son Austin Hannahs of the home; one daughter; Mrs. Georgia Eagon of Barnesville; two sisters, Kate Brownfield, of Newcomerstown, and Miss Minnie Hannahs of Columbus; and four brothers, Thurman P. Hannahs and Friend Hannahs of Cambridge; William Hannahs of Newcomerstown and Liston Hannahs of Calais. a daughter, Mrs. Opal Dewar, died in 1956.

Funeral services were held at the Campbell Funeral Home in Barnesville on Monday afternoon at two o'clock with Rev. Floyd Workman of the Main Street Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in Crestview Memorial Park [Barnesville, Belmont Co., OH].

Charles Glee Hannahs, 67, of East Canal Street, Newcomerstown, [Tuscarawas Co., OH] died Wednesday night, October 23, 1963, at 11:45 o'clock in County Memorial Hospital, Coshocton, [Franklin Co., OH].

Born in Calais [Monroe Co., OH], April 21, 1896, he was a son of the late William Alva Hannahs and Mary C. Richeson Hannahs, who survives.

He was a veteran of World War I, serving in a machine gun battalion in the Fifth Division.

Mr. Hannahs was a member of Thomas Montgomery Post No. 431, American Legion.

In addition to his mother, he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Russell Tufford, of Newcomerstown, Route 2 and Mrs. Lewis Fletcher, of St. Petersburg, Florida; and four brothers, Elvin Hannahs of Canton; Paul Hannahs of Newcomerstown; Preston Hannahs and Alva Hannahs both of Newcomerstown Route 1. One brother is deceased.

Funeral services were held in the Ourant Funeral Home, in Newcomerstown on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, with the Rev. O. E. Ghere officiating. Interment was in E. State Street Cemetery at Newcomerstown [Tuscarawas Co., OH].

OBITUARY:
Death, the grim monster that is dreaded by all, was again in our midst and once more the funeral took up its solemn march to the white-sheeted nation of the dead, the grave and the silent tomb. Death is always doing his deadly work by robbing us of the sweetest ties of nature which bound us with love and affection. But ties in this world must be severed. Christ the Redeemer of mankind, snapped the jaws of death and delivered us from the grave to the city of Jerusalem, to be with those who have left us. Oh death, where is thy sting! Oh, grave, where is thy victory! The sting of death is sin, but thanks be to God Who giveth us the victory through our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Jackson Griffith was born in Center township, Monroe county, O., August 13, 1818 and spent all his life on the farm adjoining his birthplace.

He died February 14, 1908 [Monroe Co., OH], being at the time of his departure, 89 years, 6 months and 1 day of age. He was the son of William and Mary Griffith and the youngest of ten children. All the other members of the family preceded him to the better world years ago, except one sister, who died Nov. 15, 1907.

He was first married to Mary K. Mobley, April 16, 1844. One child, Mary, was born to this union, who died in her youth.

He married his second wife, Elizabeth Foreman, April 1, 1847. To this union were born two children, Margaret A. and Nancy J., both of whom died in their youth.

On January 9, 1851, at Antioch, he married his third wife, Mary Brownfield. To this union was born one daughter, Hannah S. Griffith, who survives him. His third wife died March 24, 1882.

His fourth and last wife was Mrs. Sarah A. Trigg, whom he married May 13, 1884, whom still survives him.

He was converted in 1853 and united with the Baptist church, which was his choice, in a country schoolhouse near Cranenest creek, being a member of that church for fifty-five years. He was a deacon of the church for the past thirty-five years. He informed the writer that he struck the first blow with his ax toward building the first Baptist church at Neuhart Ridge. He was always faithful to the church, showing a good, Christian character and living a life admired by all who knew him.

He leaves to mourn his departure a loving companion, one daughter, Mrs. Hannah S. Griffith, one step-son, Geo. E. Trigg, three grandchildren, one step-grandson, four great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

On Sunday, February 16, short services were held at his home after which his remains were followed to the Neuhart Baptist church by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends, where the funeral services were held by Rev. W. E. Fletcher, of Jackson ridge, after which his remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Neuhart cemetery to await the resurrection of the just.

OBITUARY:
Isaac Eugene Eisenbarth, son of Casper and Mary Eisenbarth, was born February 28, 1845 at Duffy, [Monroe Co.,] Ohio. In early infancy he was moved to Hannibal, Ohio where he grew to young manhood.

He was united in marriage November 27, 1879 to Mary E. Griffon. To this union were born eight children, three sons and five daughters, all of whom are living.

He departed this life July 2, 1929, being at the time of his death 84 years, 4 months and 4 days old.

He is survived by his wife and the following children: William, Charles, and Chester, of Sardis, Ohio; Mrs. Charles Twinem, of Steubenville, O., Mrs. Harold Taylor of Bannock, O., Miss Lillian of Cleveland, O.; Mrs. Wesley Riggenbach and Mrs. Olive Burns, of Sardis, Ohio; seventeen grandchildren and three sisters; Mrs. Fred Thonen of Woodsfield, O.; Mrs. Conrad Sal__[unreadable] and Mrs. Geo. Myers, both of Dixon, Illinois; besides a host of other relatives and friends.

He purchased what is now the Eisenbarth home farm in Jackson twp. And with his bride moved to it on March 1, 1880 where he resided until three years ago when he moved to Sardis where he spent the remaining years of his life. He was a good neighbor, being of a pleasant, cheerful disposition and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He became a member of the Salem Evangelical church in 1881, of which he remained a member until his death. He was laid to rest in the Salem Evangelical church cemetery on July 4 [1929], there to await the resurrection.

OBITUARY: A. G. EFAW DEAD - Pneumonia the Cause of His Unexpected Death Yesterday Morning.
Centerville [IA] people learned with surprise and deep regret yesterday of the death of A. G. Efaw, which occurred at 5:00 o'clock in the morning [26 May 1901, Centerville, IA] at his home on East State street after a short illness with pneumonia fever. Mr. Efaw was janitor at the court house which position he had held for many years and almost everyone in the city knew and respected him for his quiet unassuming ways and his good character. He had formerly been janitor at the First M. E. church and for several years was janitor at the High school when it was located on the square. He had lived here for twenty-three years and previous to his coming to this city was engaged in farming. His wife and several children survive him.

Mr. Efaw had been sick for nearly two weeks but had not been considered dangerously ill. Even Saturday night his family were not alarmed about his condition and his physician thought his patient was doing as well as could be expected.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the family residence and interment will be made in Oakland cemetery. Rev. A. V. Kendrick, pastor of the First M. E. church of which the deceased was a faithful member, will conduct the services. The casket will be open at the home during tomorrow forenoon and those desiring to view the remains are requested to call at that time as the casket will not be open at the funeral service.

Allen G. Efaw was born in Chilicothee, Ross county, Ohio, January 21, 1835. He remained at this place about six years and then moved with his parents to Columbus, Ohio, remaining there seventeen years, and then emigrated to Vermilion county, Indiana, and there lived with his brother, Bennett Efaw, who is now a resident of this city, about six years then moving to Paris, IL., and remained there three years. Then the two brothers moved to Monmouth, IL., and there he married Miss Melissa Jane Parish, February 3, 1867 remaining there until 1873 when he and his family moved to Peoria, IL., where they remained about five years, then moved to Centerville in 1878 and have resided here from that time until his death.

To Mr. and Mrs. Efaw were born nine children of whom six sons and one daughter are living. The sons are: Edward, Fred, Dexter, Senter, Chester and Bennett and the only daughter is Mrs. Addie Mackey, all being residents of this city although Edward and Senter are employed in another state. One of Mr. Efaw's brothers, Bennett Efaw, recently moved to this city from Nuckolls county, Kansas, and his youngest brother, Anderson Efaw, lives in Missouri. His only sister, Mrs. Maria Miller, resides at Monmouth, IL.

HISTORY: The P.H. Drum Family Reunion was held on South High Street Last Sunday.
Following members were in attendance:  Father and Mother; F.E. Drum and sons Cecil and Raymond, Holidays Cove, WV - Clarence Drum and children, Detroit, MI - Gilbert Drum of McFadden, WV - Chas. Drum of Woodsfield - Fred Keylor and children - T.E. Drum and twin babies - Welda Hawkins and children - Guy Roth and children - photographer took pictures.

The older generation of Drums were pioneers of good old Monroe and ranked high as leading citizens of this county.  The generations that have followed have kept the faith, as in this case where P.H. Drum and wife, six of their children and 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren enjoyed a Family Reunion that will long be remembered.

Philip Harvey Drum, known to hundreds of friends as "Harve" died at the home of his son, Elwood Drum on High St., Saturday, March 28th [1931], at the advanced age of 79 years. He had been living retired for several years and was in normal health until a few weeks before his death.

His wife, who was Miss Mary Lenora Conger, preceded him in death on January 8, 1929. He is survived by three sons and three daughters as follows: F. E. Drum and T. E. Drum, of Woodsfield, ; C.E. Drum, of Woodsfield, Route 5; Mrs. Fred Keylor, of Woodsfield; Mrs. W. R. Hawkins, of Detroit; and Mrs. Guy Roth, of Woodsfield Route 5.

There are also four brothers and one sister surviving: David M. Drum and Mrs. Viola Beckett, of Sardis R. 1 ; Eugene Drum, of Ottowa, Kansas; Delbert M. Drum of Woodsfield; and Linza A. Drum of Washington, D.C.

Funeral services were held at the Elwood Drum home on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. Fleming Cash, of The M.E. Church. of which he had been a member since youth. He was a regular attendant of The Men's Bible Class of The M.E. Church at Woodsfield, members of which served as pall bearers and carried flowers. Minister J. V. A. Traylor, of The Church of Christ assisted with the service.

OBITUARY:
DAKAN - Lehigh DAKAN, a farmer located on section 17, Union Township, moved to the farm on which he now lives in the spring of 1876. His farm consists of one hundred and twenty acres, paying $8.65 per acre. He built a house 22 x 28 feet, with a wing 12 x 16 feet; dug a well, erected out buildings, put up a windmill, and set out an orchard of one hundred trees. He has added to his farm until it now contains two hundred and eighty acres.

Our subject was born March 17, 1840, in Ohio. He is a son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (SHAFFER) DAKAN, who had five children.

Our subject lived at home, until about twenty years of age, when he enlisted in Company E, Thirty-eight Ohio Infantry, and was in the Army of the Cumberland, under Gen. Thomas, and remained in the army until May, 1864. He was in the battles of Mill Spring, Murfreesboro, the siege of Vicksburg and other engagements. He served under his original enlistment until April 4, 1863, and was discharged at St. Louis, Mo., and was then appointed captain of Company K, Mississippi Marine Brigade, by Edwin M. Stanton, then Secretary of War. He served in this capacity until May, 1874, when he was discharged at Vicksburg, Miss.

Upon his return home he went to farming, coming to Harrison County [Iowa] in 1876.

Politically Mr. DAKAN is a Republican, "first, last and all the time."

He was married March 29, 1868 to Adaline LINCOLN, daughter of Thomas and Rachel (KAY) LINCOLN, natives of Ohio, who had seven children.

Mr. and Mrs. Dakan are the parents of four children -- William L., born April 29, 1869; Nellie A., December 22, 1870; Harry L., July 22, 1874, and Pearl, September 27, 1885.

OBITUARY: SUMMERFIELD [OH] --- Jacob H. Carpenter, 82, Summerfield R.D. 1, died at 7 A.M. today (Oct. 22, 1981) at his home following a long illness.

He was born Aug. 22, 1899, in Calais [Monroe Co., OH], the son of the late Henry and Annie Pierce Carpenter.

He was a retired construction worker and farmer, and was a Marion Township trustee for several years.

Mr. Carpenter leaves his wife, Alta; two daughters, Mrs. William (Alberta) Gallagher, Quaker City R.D. 2, Mrs. Girdon (Nova) Stephens, Barnesville R.D. 1; four sons, Edmund Carpenter, Quaker City R.D. 1, Marvin of Canton, Norman of Kenosha, Wis., Randall of Zanesville; 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. One son and three brothers are deceased.

Friends may call Brubach Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Friday. Services will be Saturday at 2 P.M. at the funeral home with Evangelist Michael Davis officiating. Burial will be Calais Cemetery.

OBITUARY:
Abel D. Carpenter, the subject of this sketch, was born in Seneca township [Monroe Co., OH, 21 Apr 1849] and always resided in that township. He was confined to his bed for eight weeks or more when he began to get weaker and for more then ten days seemed to be drawing closer and closer to the resting place of all the grave.

During his sickness there were several doctors in attendance, Dr. Weber of Lewisville and Dr. Williams of Summerfield. Several days before Mr. Carpenter died the above mentioned doctors accompanied by Dr. Diehl of Lewisville and Dr. Staats of Summerfield concluded to make a surgical operation which they did, but after making this investigation they pronounced the case fatal and the cause cancer, located about the stomach.

In the course of events Abel D. Carpenter died February 27th 1901 [in Monroe Co., OH], and was buried in the beautiful cemetery at Calais. His father and mother are still living, his father is 87 years old. The family of the deceased consists of his wife Mary Ann (Richeson) and three daughters who are married; Emma to Elmer Hannahs; Flora Belle to Charles Hannahs and Lousia to James Wise.

Abel Carpenter was kind and friendly to all and had a wide acquaintance every where; most people in Monroe county knew and he was a hail fellow with everybody and nobody had any real differences as to Abel. He was generous and only the worse to himself if anything. He hade a good faculty of intellect in matters of judgment and on his death bed he called names of many people he would like to see before he died. He had a kindly feeling and pleasant calling of past recollections of pleasant times with his many friends and all the time he was lingering in sickness there was a continual coming and going of friends.

He called all his family about him shortly before he died and in his usual way of conversation told them he would not live much to get and talked to them as a sensible father would about what he would like them to do and what he had fixed in his mind. It was his wish that he might meet them all in Heaven. He expressed his desire that the writer of this sketch should write about him and send it to the THE SPIRIT OF DEMOCRACY to be put in that paper. Now we have done so and though frail as we may have performed the task yet the deceased was known by me for a good many years and all his career was to be sociable and friendly toward all, and like all of us he had his ups and downs and has passed the threshold of this life to join the innumerable throng which moves to that mysterious realm of Heaven where each of shall take his place in the halls of eternity.

The family of the deceased desired to express their thanks to their may friend who so kindly assisted and aided them in their patient care during the time the deceased was confined to his bed.

RECOLLECTIONS: Reunion Sept 1930
The children and grandchildren of the late Abel [D.] Carpenter [and Mary Ann Richeson] met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Abel Brown on Route 1 and enjoyed their first family reunion.

At noon a sumptuous picnic dinner was served and a most delightful social time was enjoyed by all. It was decided to make the reunion an annual event with the place of the 1931 reunion to be determined later.

OBITUARY:
John Woodman Carmichael was born [10 Jan 1859] near Stafford, Ohio, and passed away in Guthrie Center, Iowa at age of 73 years, 17 days [27 Jan 1934]. He was the second son of Joshua and Nancy Okey Carmichael.

On September 9, 1888 he was married with Emma Hall of Washington County, Ohio. To this happy union were born four sons and four daughters. The wife, two daughters and four sons survive, two daughters dying in infancy. Also one sister, Mrs. Martha Wilson, Alliance, Ohio survives. The sons and daughters who mourn the passing of their father are: Mrs. Guy Bosier, Mrs. Guy Beck, Thomas K., William F., and Harry all of Guthrie Center, Iowa, and George, Savannah, Missouri also ten grandchildren and one great grandson. When a young man Mr. Carmichael united with the M.E. church at Stafford, Ohio and was a firm believer to the end.

In 1919, the family moved to Guthrie Center [Iowa] where he has since made his home. (after the death of his mother)

For the past three years he has been an invalid, but was always patient, cheerful and enjoyed so much to visit with friends and neighbors who called to see him.

Funeral services were held Thursday at 2:00 P.M. in the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Clifford V. Pence, assisted by Rev. Winkleman pastor of the Baptist church. Interment was made in Union Cemetery.

OBITUARY:
Jacob Baker died about 9 o'clock last Friday night, April 4th, 1919, at the home of his son, Alexander Z. Baker [Middlebourne, Tyler Co., WV], from a complication of ailments incident to old age, in the 72nd year of his age.

He was born on June 1st, 1847, in Noble County, Ohio and came to Tyler county in the early seventies with his parents, Andrew and Nancy Baker, who later moved back to Ohio.

He and Sarah Ann Ash were united in marriage January 30th, 1873 [Tyler Co., WV] to which union seven sons were born, six of whom survive him. They are Charles R., William P., Alexander Z., Andrew H., Leck S., and Martin L. all of whom are well known by our people. One sister, Mrs. Sarah Stephens of Stafford, Ohio, and four brothers, Harmon, Henry, John, and Richard of Noble county, Ohio survive him.

He was a member of the United Brethren church of Middlebourne for a number of years.

He was of jovial and kind disposition, always having a good word to his friends. His death came as a shock to his friends as it was not known that he was sick.

His wife and son, Frederick O. Baker, preceded him in death, Fred having died only last January 19, 1919.

The bereaved sons and relatives have the sympathy of their many friends in their hour of sorrow.

The funeral services were held today, Thursday at 10 a.m. by Rev. W.E. Crawl, his pastor, and the interment at the Henderson cemetery by the side of his wife.

Note: He was in Monroe County - at a location which became Noble County when the county was formed in March 1851.

He was born in Monroe Co., Ohio on 11 Oct 1822.

In May 1843, he married Miss H.J. Hall [Emily Jane Hall, date may have been Abt. 7 Mar 1843] and to this union twelve children were born:

OBITUARY:
Sarah M. Highman, daughter of Abner and Clarissa Collins Byers, was born July 27, 1847 [Ohio] and departed this life March 8, 1935, being at the time of her death 87 years, 7 months and 12 days of age.

She united in marriage to Duncan Highman on April 27, 1865 and immediately went to housekeeping on Conner Ridge [Monroe Co., OH] and lived with her husband and children all her life on the same farm.

To this union were born nine children, eight boys and one girl, whose names are as follows:  Abner, Clarissa, Oliver, David, William, James, Clarence, Hamilton, and Oscar, all of Woodsfield, Route 2.

Two sons, David and William, preceded her in death many years ago.  Her husband also died on May 28, 1907.  Since that time she has still remained at the old home with her two sons James and Clarence who have since taken care of her.

She united with the M.E. Church at Conner Ridge early in life and remained faithful until the end and was always at church when ever her health would permit.

She leaves to mourn her death, seven children; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-five great grandchildren; one brother, U.S. Byers; two sisters, Deborah Lucas and Isadora Christy besides a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday morning, March 10, by her pastor, Rev. W.A. Weddle assisted by Dwight Christy, in the presence of a large concourse of friends.  Her body was laid to rest in the church cemetery to await the Resurrection Morn.

OBITUARY: Mrs. Julia A. Sloan
This community was shocked by the news of the death of Mrs. Julia Ann Sloan which occurred in a hospital in Wheeling, where she had been taken for treatment.  She had been an invalid for several years and her sufferings were severe at times but she bore them patiently.

The subject of this sketch was the wife of Andrew J. Sloan and the daughter of Abner and Mary A. Jeffers Byers.  She was born Sept. 10, 1867, near Graysville [Monroe Co., OH] and died in a hospital in Wheeling August 6, 1903, being 35 years, 10 months and 26 days of age.

She was united in marriage with Andrew Jackson Sloan, December 20, 1888, to which union were born four children who are left without a mother's care.  She was converted in the year 1887 and united with the M.E. Church at Conners, in which faith she lived until called from sufferings to the "Haven of Rest."

The remains were brought from Wheeling to her late home on the 7th and on the 9th of August at 10:00 o'clock a.m. quite a number of friends and relatives congregated at the home of the deceased to weep with those that weep and pay the last rites of respect to one they loved and honored.

Services were conducted by James Cline at the Conner Church, after which the remains were tenderly borne to the cemetery nearby and there interred to await the resurrection of the just.

OBITUARY:
Garrett Byers, while out with his little son, Edmund, burning tobacco beds, on Saturday, 22 March 1884, part of a dead tree fell on him crushing his right shoulder and breaking his left leg.  His body was badly smashed.  Doctors Perry and Fogle did everything within their power but to no avail.  Mr. Byers died on Monday, 24 Mar 1884, and is buried at the Conner Ridge Cemetery in Wayne Twp. [Monroe Co., OH], but there is no stone for him.

He was married to Sarah Tabitha Highman, daughter of David and Jane Lowe Highman.  (Sarah died 2 March 1894 and is buried on route 26 in the Bracy cemetery between Ozark and Coats Station, but there is no stone for her.)
