Veselack, Mary E. "Liz" (Miller)

NORMAL, [IL] — Mary E. “Liz” Veselack, 81, Normal, passed away at 2:12 a.m. Monday (Dec. 14, 2009) at the McLean County Nursing Home, Normal.

A private family memorial service will be Thursday at the Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, with inurnment to follow at Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington. The Rev. Spencer Gillespie will officiate.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 2502 E. College Ave., Bloomington, IL 61704, or the International Music Camp, North Dakota.

Liz was born Nov. 15, 1928, in Manlius, the daughter of William Henry and Sally Rachel Morris Miller. She married Richard D. Veselack on June 10, 1951, in Manlius. He survives.

Also surviving are three children, John (Ellen) Veselack, Los Angles, Calif.; Jane Ann (Paul) Zilmer, Bloomington; and Paul (Anne) Veselack, Libertyville; and six grandchildren, Caleb Zilmer and Andrew Zilmer, both of Medford, Ore.; Esther Zilmer, Bloomington; Teresa Veselack, Libertyville; Kristian Gustafson, San Diego, Calif.; and Isaac Zilmer, Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Liz was a member of the First Baptist Church, Bloomington.

She graduated from Manlius High School in 1946 and later graduated from Illinois State Normal University in 1950, with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She taught elementary school in Morton and LeRoy, and later taught in Michigan and Washington State. She and her husband later returned to Normal, where she was a substitute teacher. Following a move to DeKalb, they moved to North Dakota and returned after a year; later moving to Bloomington in 1968, where she taught third grade at Irving and Washington schools until she retired in 1987. She was a member of the Bloomington Education Association and a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Melvin E. Hinthorn

The funeral for Melvin E. Hinthorn, 81, of Sun City AZ, and formerly of Normal, Hudson, and Decatur, [IL] will be at 10 a.m. Monday, at the Metzler-Froelich Memorial Home, Bloomington. The Rev. James Wooton officiating.

Mr. Hinthorn died at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday (Nov. 23, 1999), at Boswell Memorial Hospital, Sun City AZ.

Burial will be in Hudson Cemetery, with military rites accorded by the Louis E. Davis, American Legion Post 56, of Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Sunday, at the memorial home. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Virgal L. Hinthorn

Virgal L. Hinthorn, 88, of 1613 E. Olive St., Bloomington, [IL] died at 2:30 a.m. Monday (Dec. 26, 2000) at Martin Health Center, Bloomington.

His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, the Rev. Gerald T. Ward officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. Hinthorn was born Oct. 25, 1912, at Hudson. He married Mary A. Niehus on July 27, 1947, at Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Ann Jirard, Redmond, Ore.; four sons, Robert (Judy) Hinthorn, Tucson, Ariz.; Darwin (Betty) Hinthorn, Normal; Richard Hinthorn, Bloomington; and Carl (Judy) Hinthorn, Towanda; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and a grandson.

Mr. Hinthorn farmed at Barnes for many years. He worked for International Harvester, El Paso, beginning in 1937. He later co-owned the International Harvester in Hudson and in 1949 he became sole owner of the implement store in El Paso. He was involved in land clearing and cutting for the Lake Bloomington project.

Obituary: Susie Mae Hinthorn, 67, of Mission, Texas, formerly of Peoria, died Tuesday, March 9, 1993, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.

She was born in Denver and married William Hinthorn. He survives.

Also surviving are her mother, Mary Frisbie of Denver; one son, William of Overland Park, Kan.; four daughters, Dianne Durham and Joanne Wikoff, both of Peoria, Janet Brown of Washington and Carol Mohney of Knoxville, Tenn.; several brothers and sisters; and six grandchildren.

Obituary: CREVE COEUR -- Rose F. Slusher, 89, of 804 E. Divison, Peoria Heights, formerly of Creve Coeur, died at 11:28 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 1993, at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

Born Aug. 13, 1904, in Creve Coeur to Joseph B. and Jennie A. Hinthorn Serpette, she married Frank L. Slusher on Feb. 16, 1927, in Peoria. He died May 24, 1985. One brother and two sisters also preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Charlotte) Mathews of Peoria Heights; and one grandson.

She was a silver polisher in the banquet kitchen at the Hotel Pere Marquette in Peoria for 28 years.

She was a member of Neighborhood House in Peoria, where she was active with the Tuesday and Wednesday Club, Travel Club and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. The Rev. Leonard Martz will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria.

Obituary: PEORIA -- Phillip C. Baxter, 62, of Peoria, formerly of Camdenton, Mo., died at 12:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4, 1994, in King man, Ariz.

Born Feb. 17, 1932, in Peoria to William and Goldie Lance Baxter, he married Shirley A. Hinthorn on Dec. 19,1953, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, James and Roger, both of Peoria; three daughters, Mrs. Billy (Cindy) Halstead, Mrs. Nathan (Sherry) Miller and Crystal Baxter, all of Peoria; eight grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Gerald (Joyce) Collins of Peoria. He was preceded in death by one brother.

He was a firefighter for the Peoria Fire Department for 28 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Illinois Association of Retired Fire Fighters and Fire Fighters Local 544. He was a member of Elks Lodge 20 in Peoria.

He was an Air Force veteran.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the chapel, where Elks services will be at 5:45 p.m. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria.

Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or any charity.

Obituary: GREEN VALLEY -- Albert J. Hinthorn, 73, of 200 Country Drive, died at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 1997, in the Pekin Hospital emergency room.

Born Sept. 17, 1923, in Peoria to James A. and Anna Schuck Hinthorn, he married Averil E. Call on Dec. 7, 1942, in East Peoria. She died Aug. 1, 1990, in Green Valley.

Surviving are one daughter, Joyce A. Hinthorn of Hanna City; two sons, Albert F. of Pekin and Larry L. of Green Valley; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Burden of Mackinaw and Shirley Baxter of Peoria; and one brother, William of Mission, Texas.

A truck driver, he retired from Bosche Trucking Co. in Peoria in 1982.
He was a World War II Army veteran.

He was a member of Teamsters Local 627 and the Teamsters Retirees Club, both in Peoria.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Woolsey Funeral Home in Pekin. The Rev. Ernstfried J. Lang will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.

Obituary: EL PASO -- C. William "Bill" Vandegraft, 68, of 25 W. Second St. died at 3:50 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, 1994, at BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal.

Born July 31, 1926, in Clarksville to Jesse "Bud" and Luscina Barnett Vandegraft, he married Mary Kearfott on Nov. 2, 1949, in Eureka. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Yvonne McKinley of Kappa, Cora Parrish and Becky Vandegraft, both of El Paso; two sons, Doug of Ojai, Calif., and Mike of Secor; two sisters, Janelle Roseman of Eureka and Helen Whitacre of Hudson; three brothers, Jim of Danvers, Cliff of Eureka and Jerry of Chillicothe; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson. One son, Eddy, preceded him in death.

He worked for Ulrich Fabricating in Roanoke and later for Rivinius Fabricating in Eureka, retiring in 1991.

A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of El Paso American Legion and a charter member of Lake Bloomington American Legion. He also was a member of El Paso Christian Church.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Froelich Memorial Home in El Paso. The Revs. Jim Derby and Dale Wise will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the memorial home. Burial will be in Hinthorn Cemetery in rural Hudson, where military rites will be conducted by the El Paso American Legion.

Problem:
Lee Allen Hinthorne may have been born in Davenport, Scott, IA. His son, Frank, so stated on birth certificate of his sister, Margaret Laura Hinthorne, on 23 Jul 1942 when he certified a delayed birth certificate for her. The obituary gave the birth place as McLean Co., IL.

Robert Hinthorne wrote: There is a conflict about where Lee Allen Hinthorne was born. His son, Frank, made a declaration (witness) before a Notary Public that his father was born in Davenport, Iowa and that the birthplace of his mother, Laura Sophorina Paul, was Jeffersonville, Ohio. The cause for this declaration was to obtain a Birth Certificate for Frank Hinthorne's sister, Margaret Laura Hinthorne, dated 29 May 1942.


Robert continues: Previous to finding the above cited document there was no other evidence to prove where either Lee Allen or Laura Sophorine (Paul) Hinthorne were born. It was generally believed that Lee Allen Hinthorne was born near Towanda in Lexington Township, McLean Co., IL. It was believed taht Laura Sophorina was born in Cincinnati, Ohio.

BIOGRAPHY: Lee Allen Hinthorne
Lee was a building contractor. He was a 33rd Degree Mason.
The Lee Allen Hinthorne family lived at Towanda, IL before moving, in 1884, to Carlinville, IL. Towanda was near Bloomington, IL about 230 miles north of Carlinville. The move south was made in their covered wagon and took them 10 days to complete.

Frank Hinthorne, (father of Helen (Hinthorne) Lindquist who wrote this item) was 10 years old at the time. He was born on 6 Mar 1874. He told the family of the wonderful trip they had, even with all their hardships. They would make campfires during the day to cook their food and would sleep at night in a farmer's barn, if one was near, or make a campsite.

Lee Hinthorne was a Civil War veteran and a 33rd degree Mason. His picture still remained in the Masonic Hall at Carlinville, IL (1980).

He owned Lee Hinthorne and Company House Raising and moved houses. His work also included building foundations in stone, cement and brick. He dug cellars, cisterns and did repair work. He owned the first lumber yard and saw mill. He did repair work on the Macoupin County Courthouse in Carlinville, IL. His two sons, Frank and Elmer, helped him in his business. His grandson, William Hinthorne, Frank's son, got his finger cut off at the sawmill, which kept him from entering the First World War.

When Lee Hinthorne died, 11 Nov 1911, he left his business to his second son, Frank.

OBITUARY: Death of Lee Allen Hinthorn
Lee Allen Hinthorn an old resident of Carlinville, IL and veteran of the Civil War, died Saturday, November 11, 1911.

An old and highly respected resident of this city and veteran of the Civil War in the person of Lee Allen Hinthorn, died at his home in this city at 332 Plum St., Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock.
Mr. Hinthorn was aged 66 years and 3 days. He had been failing in health for a number of months and while it was not generally known among his friends that his condition was serious, yet his family knew such to be the case.

Lee Allen Hinthorn was born in McLean County, Illinois on Nov. 8th, 1845. In that county he grew to young manhood, where he was married to Miss Laura Paul. To this union seven children were born, six of whom are now living and are as follows:

Frank Hinthorn, Mrs. Maude Arnold and Mrs. Ethel Pursey of Carlinville; Mrs. Eddie Fay of Alton; Mrs. Margaret Gay of Springfield; and Elmer Hinthorn of East St. Louis. The widow also survives her husband. In addition, the deceased is survived by one brother, Jefferson Hinthorn, of Topeka, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. Ellen Willis of McLean County.

Mr. Hinthorn has been a resident of Carlinville for many years, during which time he followed the occupation of house moving and construction work. Until his health failed he was always busy with his work and was respected by all who knew him.

In May 1863, he joined Company I, 145 Illinois Infantry. He served two years in that memorable contest, the Civil War. Since that conflict Mr. Hinthorn has been a constant sufferer from a wound received in one of his legs while in service. This wound had never healed and during the long period of time since the close of this war, Mr. Hinthorn has suffered from it. This fact was not known to many, except to a few of his intimate friends. It was a serious handicap, yet, seldom was he known to complain. He served his country faithfully and honorably. His demise will be a source of extreme regret to those who knew him best.

Funeral services were held from this home on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. C.C. Brown, of the Holiness Mission officiated. There was a large attendance by those who wished to pay their last tribute of respect. Interment was in the city cemetery. The Odd Fellows and Dan Messick Post G.A.R. officiated at the grave.

OBITUARY: Floyd E. Hinthorn
Floyd E. Hinthorn, 78, a former resident of 128 1/2 W. Main, died at 3:20 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 14, 1971) in the International Nursing Home where he had been a patient two weeks.

Mr. Hinthorn had been hospitalized prior to entering the nursing home and had been in failing health two years.

A resident of Danville the past 20 years, Mr. Hinthorn was born July 1, 1893 [sic, probably, 7 Jul 1893] at Hudson, IL, son of Jackson and Fannie Messer Hinthorn.

He attended schools in Hudson and later farmed near that community until moving to Danville.

Mr. Hinthorn had operated a parking lot on S. Walnut for many years, retiring two years ago because of his health.

He married Bessie Harmeson at Colfax, IL in 1910. She died in 1924 [sic, Feb 1928].

Survivors include a brother Loren of Danville; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Walden and Mrs. Myrtle Brooker, both of Leroy, and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Alberta; two brothers, and two sisters.

The body is at Pape Memorial Home where visitation will be held from 2-4 and from 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with burial in Wiley Cemetery at Colfax.

OBITUARY: Death of Mrs. Cyrena Hinthorne
Mrs. Cyrena Hinthorne, one of the old settlers of this part of the state, died at the house of her daughter, Mrs. Seth Maple, in Hudson, [IL], at 12:30 a.m., August 4, [1878]. She was born in North Carolina March 21, 1800, was married to Adam Hinthorne (deceased since 1857) in 1834, and settled in Woodford County, this state, the same year. Since the death of her husband she has lived among her numerous relatives in Money Creek township.

She was the mother of five children, but one of whom, Mrs. Maple, survives her.

Her funeral, at Mr. Seth Maple's, Monday, was attended by an immense crowd from different parts of McLean and Woodford Counties. The funeral procession, from Maples' to the Hinthorn grave yard, where the remains were interred, was over a half mile in length. The funeral sermon will be preached by Rev. Mr. Powell at some further time.

Mrs. Hinthorne, for years known far and near as "Aunt Cyrena," was a member of the U.B. Church in high standing, as was also her husband during his lifetime. Modest and retiring to the last degree, "Aunt Cyrena" was loved and revered by everyone. She knew not, practically, the meaning of the word "enemy." Her illness, senile consumption, lasted over six months, during which she was tenderly cared for by her daughter's family. Everything that love and the most anxious solicitude for her comfort could suggest was done cheerfully for her by them. Mrs. Maple is herself quite unwell.

The funeral of Ron A. Brewington, 45, of 3035 Ann Drive, Bloomington, will be at 11 a.m. today at Evangelical Free Church, Bloomington. The Rev. Bud Craig will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today at the church. Metzler-Froelich Memorial Home, Bloomington has charge of arrangements.

He died at 5:57 p.m. Monday (Dec. 18, 2000) at his home. He had been ill.

Mr. Brewington was born March 31, 1955, at Peoria, a son of Harrel and Janette Biggers Brewington. He married Diane S. Anderson on Nov. 16, 1990, in Bloomington. She survives.

Also surviving are his parents of Pekin; three daughters, Heather Crandall, Goodlettsville, Tenn.; Sheila (Jason) Stephens and Jennifer (Gary) Hinthorn, both of Bloomington; and two brothers, Keith Brewington, Green Valley; and Dan (Marta) Brewington, St. Louis, Mo.

Other survivors include his father- and mother-in-law, Carl and Eva Anderson, Bloomington; three grandchildren, Sabrina and Constance Short, and Paige Hinthorn; and a sister-in-law, Julia B. Lindoerfer, Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Pam Faulk.

Ron was a 1973 graduate of Pekin High School where he was active in football, golf and hockey. He had been a member of the First Baptist Church, Pekin. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He was a member of the El Paso Golf Club and a former member of the Bloomington Moose Lodge. He owned and operated Twin City Handyman Service in Bloomington.

Ron was an avid golfer and enjoyed cooking. He was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, brother and grandfather. He especially enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. Ron was very romantic and on many occasions surprised his wife Diane with special gifts.

Virgal Hinthorn

Virgal L. Hinthorn, 88, of 1613 E. Olive St., Bloomington, died at 2:30 a.m. Monday (Dec. 26, 2000) at Martin Health Center, Bloomington.

His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington, the Rev. Gerald T. Ward officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Bloomington. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. Hinthorn was born Oct. 25, 1912, at Hudson. He married Mary A. Niehus on July 27, 1947, at Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Ann Jirard, Redmond, Ore.; four sons, Robert (Judy) Hinthorn, Tucson, Ariz.; Darwin (Betty) Hinthorn, Normal; Richard Hinthorn, Bloomington; and Carl (Judy) Hinthorn, Towanda; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and a grandson.

Mr. Hinthorn farmed at Barnes for many years. He worked for International Harvester, El Paso, beginning in 1937. He later co-owned the International Harvester in Hudson and in 1949 he became sole owner of the implement store in El Paso. He was involved in land clearing and cutting for the Lake Bloomington project.

Vernal Fannin

WAYNESVILLE -- Vernal Fannin, 92, of Waynesville died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 21, 2000) at Crestview Healthcare Center, Clinton.

His funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton. Burial will be in Long Point Cemetery, Wapella. Visitation will be one hour before the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Waynesville Christian Church.

Mr. Fannin was born July 24, 1908, at West Liberty, Ky., a son of Willie and Myrtle McGuire Fannin. He married Lois Pauline Darland on July 13, 1937, at Lovington, N.M. She survives in Decatur.

Also surviving are a daughter, Joyce E. (Steve E.) Van Vleet, Decatur; four sons, Jerry D. (Nancy K.) Fannin, LeRoy; Jim (Lynda) Fannin, Normal; Wayne (Lola) Fannin, Assumption; and Marshall (Rayona) Fannin, Atlanta; a sister, Elva Leathers, Calumet City; 19 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

Mr. Fannin was a member of Waynesville Christian Church.

He farmed for several years in Texas and worked at Bloomington's First Baptist Church for 12 years.

He and Mrs. Fannin were honored as Waynesville's Oldest Married Couple during the town's Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2000.
