OBITUARY:
John Fremont Daken, son of William and Angeline Dakan was born at Harris Grove, [Harrison Co.,] IA., May 31, 1856 and passed away at the Oxford Hospital [Oxford, Furnas Co., NE] October 2, 1950 at the age of 94 years, four months and two days.

He lived in Iowa until the spring of 1879 when he went to Mitchell county Kansas. Living there a year he returned to Iowa where he lived until April 1886, when he moved to Norton county, Kansas.

He was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Elizabeth Sorey at Blair, Nebr. To this union six children were born. Everett S. living at Baldwin Park, Calif., and Elsie Verna and Homer G. who with three children who died in infancy, preceded him in death.

After living in Norton county for two years Mr. Dakan moved to Chase county, Nebr., where the family lived until Aug. 1893, when he and the family moved to Beaver City, Nebr., which has since been his home.

His first wife passed to the Great Beyond Oct., 2, 1898.

On Sept., 17, 1899 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Amanda Ellen Sorey, formerly Miss Amanda Ellen Moore. To this union six children were born; Thelma Copeland of North Platte; Blanche Irdine Leitner of Traer, Kans., William L. Dakan of Kansas City; Veda Guffy of Fort Morgan, Colo.; Nellie Uehlin of Caldwell, Ida. and Wayne D. Dakan of Sacramento, Calif.
[Note: After the death of his first wife he married the widow (Amanda Ellen Moore Sorey) of his first wife's brother.]

His second wife passed away Sept. 27, 1949 at the family home in Beaver City.

Mr. Dakan united with the Methodist church late in life and was a faithful witness for his Lord to the last. He was a loving father and loved by every one who knew him.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 4 at the Methodist church with Rev. T.E. Smith and Rev. George Goodwin officiating. Mrs. Gene Shafer and Mrs. Irma Fleming sang My Glory on the Cross, Asleep in Jesus and Rock of Ages, accompanied by George Shafer, Jr. Pall bearers were Mearl Shellenbarger, William Boop, C.O. Lamb, Carl Smith, Henry Allen and Byron Courtright. Honorary pallbearers were S.J. Price, W.S. Fleming, O.J. Carr and Will Smith. Interment was made in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

OBITUARY: Was Nearly 97 Years Old - Franklin Baldwin Who Died Tuesday Was Born in Ohio in 1819
Franklin Baldwin, the oldest citizen in Wellsville, [Franklin Co., KS] and a resident of the town since 1882, died at his home at 2:15 Tuesday morning, [4 Jan 1916] following a general breaking down.  Mr. Baldwin had been in fairly good health until two weeks ago, and during the past summer and fall had been able to do quite a little work about his home.  Until two weeks ago he had been able to shave himself regularly.

He was born in Clarington, Ohio, February 9, 1819.  He moved to Macon county, Missouri, after the way, and later to Shelby county, where he made his home on a farm.  In the early seventies he went to Great Bend, Kans. where he bought railroad land and attempted to farm.  The drou[g]th discouraged him and he returned to Missouri, locating at Pleasant Hill. In 1882 he move to Wellsville, [KS].

Mr. Baldwin was married to Mary Jane Newhouse, in October 1843.  Mrs. Baldwin died in Wellsville July 6, 1885.  In 1897 he was married to Martha Jane Ryan whose death occurred in November 1914.  For a number of months before his death he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Carrie Inman, who came here to care for her father.

The deceased had a wagon maker's shop on the east side of Main street for many years, until age compelled him to retire from business.  He took an active interest in political matters and in all his life missed but one chance to vote at a presidential election, that of four years ago, when his physical abilities had failed him so that it was inconvenient for him to get about.

He had been a member of the Baptist church for a long time, in Missouri and in Wellsville, and until quite recently was a regular attendant at church services.

Baldwin, Monte Vallo, Mo.; Albert Baldwin, Clarinda, Ia., and Mrs. Dora Baker, Portland, Ore.

One person reported that Nancy Ables was from Norton, Arkansas, it is possible that she was from Norton, KS since that is where it is reported that her husband, James, died.  (Note:  Subsequent information from Chrissie Drommer confirmed that she lived in Norton, KS.)

OBITUARY: Nancy Ellen Ables [Henthorn] was born, August 12, 1838 in Guernsey County, Ohio and moved with her parents when about four years old to Washington County, Pennsylvania. She was married on August 23, 1857 to James Henthorn of Washington County, Ohio.  To this union ten children were born, seven of whom are still living: John W. of Blue Springs, Nebraska; W.D. of Estacada, Oregon; J.M. of Easton, PA; I.P. of Coyle, Oklahoma; and Pemma J. Ooton, Mary Thea Hubbard, and Jettie May Drommer, all of Norton, Kansas.  All were present at the [death] of their mother except, J.M., of Easton, Penn.

In 1885, the family moved from Butler County, Iowa to Norton County, Kansas locating 7 1/2 miles northeast of Norton in Emmett township, where they continued to live until 1905, when they sold the farm and moved to Norton.

Mrs. Henthorn died at the home in this city on, Feb. 15, 1913, aged 74 years, 6 months, and 3 days.

Besides the children named she leaves a husband, one brother, and one sister, both living in Ohio, 29 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

She became a Christian at the age of 12 or 13 years, and has always lived a Christian life.

For years Mr. and Mrs. Henthorn were faithful in trying to build up the work at Highland school house, and since coming to Norton they have been in constant attendance and service in the church as long as their health permitted.

We lay her away firm in the faith and assurance of a resurrection unto eternal life through Christ our Lord.

Yoho, John Otto and Gardner, Belle

John Otto Yoho

John Otto Yoho, eldest son of the late Peter F. and Martha S. Yoho, was born November 9, 1869, at Fontana, Kansas, being the first white child born in Miami County, that state, and departed this life at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Johanning at Wheeling, W. Va., where he had been visiting, Saturday evening,  September 26, 1931, following an illness from heart affection.


He came with his parents, upon their return to Ohio, to Lewisville, Monroe County,  later resided with them at East Union and in the early 80's came with the family to Caldwell, where the greater part of his life was spent.  He acquired a common school education and later was associated with his father in business at Caldwell.  In later years he entered the employ of the Neil & Ellingham Wholesale Grocery Company at Wheeling.  In still later years he associated himself with the Dill Medicine Company, of Norristown, Pa., with headquarters at Pittsburgh, Pa., with which company he remained until he came to Caldwell some years ago, and purchased the merchandise stock owned by the late J. Stanton Harris.  This business he continued here until he removed the stock of goods to Dexter City, where he continued the business until failing health more than two years ago prevented his further engagement in active business.


On September 7, 1892, he was untied in marriage at Cambridge, Ohio, to Belle Gardner Matthews, of that city, and resided at that place until their removal to Pittsburgh.  To this union no children were born. The deceased is survived by his wife and one step-daughter, Mrs. Daisy Stewart, both of Cambridge, and four sisters, Mrs. Lillian Harris, of Caldwell and Mrs. George E. Harsch, Mrs. O.G. Mills and Mrs. Pearl Coburn all of Zanesville.


The deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew him and had the highest respect of all his acquaintances.  He was honest and upright, true to his convictions, generous and [had] sympathy for all in need and distress, and his passing is deeply mourned by his legions of friends.


The body was brought to the home of his sister, Mrs. Harris, at Caldwell, where funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon by Rev. D. C. Marshall, of Flushing, Ohio, former pastor of the Caldwell Presbyterian Church, a close and affectionate friend of the deceased, following which the body was placed in the Yoho vault in the Olive Cemetery.  Wed. 7 Oct. 1931 Noble County Leader Caldwell Ohio.

Belle (Gardner) Yoho

Mrs. Belle Yoho, aged 70, widow of John Yoho, passed away at 9:30 o'clock Friday morning at the home of her daughter,  Mrs. John Stewart, 317 South Eleventh Street, after an illness lasting two months.


She was born in Washington, Pa., the daughter of John and Mary Ellen Katy Gardner, and came to Cambridge when a child with her parents, residing here ever since.  Mrs. Yoho had a large number of friends and was highly respected.  She was a member of the First Christian Church for many years and when her health permitted was active in its affairs.


She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter, Mrs. Stewart with whom she lived lived;  one brother, Frank Gardner of North Eighth street, and one sister, Mrs. George Haines of Zanesville.  Her husband died three years ago.  Friday 25 Jan. 1935 Jeffersonian Cambridge Ohio.

OBITUARY: Dairy Leader, Mark Abildgaard Dies

The man who was long considered Mr. Dairy in Kansas died April 28, at the age of 87. Mark Abildgaard, a 1911 graduate of Kansas State University managed dairy farms and brought high quality breeding cattle to the state before becoming the owner of his own dairy farm.

As a dairyman he was a leader in organizing Wichita Milk Producers Association in 1931. He was its first president and in 1932 became manager, a job he held until retirement in 1955.

As a dairy co-op manager he was described by John Heersche, elderly Kansas dairyman as "priding himself in running an efficient operation on the smallest dollar with the largest return to the dairy farmer."

"Without an attorney and as sole spokesman for dairy farmer interests, Abildgaard handled all testimony at federal order hearings. He was considered honest and fair, and his judgment was respected in all segments of the industry," said Heersche.

"Through Abildgaard's efforts Dairy Council was brought to Wichita, and he supported and aided its function through the years," said Wichita Dairy Council leader Molly Goodwin, now with Dairy Council, Inc.

WMPA became a member of the National Milk Producers Federation because of the influence of Abildgaard.

"He was a great dairy leader," said Lynn Elrod, who replaced Abildgaard as manager of WMPA in 1955. Elrod is now assistant to the general manager of AMPI.

Jim Moore, manager of the Kansas Division of AMPI said, "Kansas dairymen will miss the influence and counsel of this outstanding dairy leader."

OBITUARY: J.E. Paton Services Held Monday Afternoon

Funeral services for James Edward Paton, 64, were held this afternoon at 3 at the Swisher Mortuary. The Rev. F.H. Hayward officiated and burial was in Union Cemetery.

He died Saturday (1 Aug 1953 according to telegram sent to Kenneth H. Bruner) at 12:30 p.m. at Newton Nemorial Hospital after a long illness. He underwent surgery November 15 and had failed since. He was last admitted to the hospital nine weeks ago.

Paton was born in Sumner County, Oct. 22, 1888, the son of George and Mary Paton, and had lived in and near Winfield for 31 years. March 1, 1916, in Winfield, he was married to Inez Henthorne. He had been a salesman for a monument company for a number of years.

His affliations included the Presbyterian Church and the Winfield Garden Club, and he had served on the city park board for a number of years. He was an iris enthusiast and his garden at the Paton home, 903 Ann, was a place of interest during the blooming iris season.

He is survived by his wife, Inez, of the home; four brothers, George M. of Long Beach, Calif., and W.H., Jack and Fred Paton, all of Winfield; one sister, Mrs. Henry Fair of Geuda Springs; and an aunt, Mrs. Anna Sommerville of Winfield.

OBITUARY: Funeral Held Sunday for Mrs. Abildgaard Many Pay Respect to Widely Known Woman

Funeral services for Mrs. Mark Abildgaard, who died at her home five miles northwest of Mulvane, [KS] at about 4:30 o'clock last Friday afternoon, May 6 [1932], were held Sunday afternoon at the Mulvane Methodist Church. Mrs. Abildgaard had been in failing health the past few years. She had been a constant sufferer for several months and her death had been expected daily for almost a month.

The funeral services Sunday were conducted by Rev. H.H. Rayborn, pastor of the Derby Presbyterian Church, and assisted by Rev. C.C. Brown, pastor of the M.E. Church here. The church was filled with a large number of friends and relatives from Mulvane, Derby, Waco, Winfield and other communities where Mrs. Abildgaard was so well known.

Music was furnished by a male quartet from the Derby Presbyterian Church composed of Messrs. John and Oscar Yungmeyer, Waguh and James Alley, who sang "Abide with Me," "The City Foursquare," and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," accompanied by Lee Waugh, pianist. Mrs. Owen Nisbit of Winfield sang "That Wonderful Mother of Mine," accompanied by Miss Helen Swinney, at the request of Mrs. Abildgaard's children. [The funeral was held on Mother's Day.]

Services at the funeral were carried out as they had been arranged by Mrs. Abildgaard some time before her passing. Pallbearers were: Ira Abildgaard of Oxford, and Fred Abildgaard, Arthur Abildgaard, L. Henthorne, J.E. Paton and Roy Waters of Winfield. Burial was in Mulvane Cemetery, in charge of Gordon Mortuary.

Ruth Wentworth Henthorne was born March 14, 1893, in Winfield, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Henthorne. She attended public schools there and graduated from Winfield High School with the class of 1910. She taught one year at Silverdale, [KS] and one year at Bryant, Winfield.

On April 28, 1914, she was married to Mark Abildgaard of Winfield. Four children were born to them, three of whom survive: Robert, John and Jean. Other survivors are: her husband, her mother, Mrs. Minnie Henthorne of Winfield; two sisters, Mrs. J.E. Paton of Winfield; Mrs. R.E. Burger of Oklahoma City and Lawrence Henthorne of Winfield.

Mr. and Mrs. Abildgaard came to the Mulvane community 14 years ago this spring, living first south of town, then in the Rockford neighborhood northeast of here, and six years ago moving to the present home between here and Waco. During the years she was here, Mrs. Abilgaard was prominent in church and civic activities, besides attending the many duties of her home. She was at the time of her death a member of the Derby Presbyterian Church, where until prevented by ill health, she was active in the church and its auxiliary organizations. She was an active member in the Fern Chapter of the Eastern Star, Mulvane and Royal Neighbors of America and of the Mulvane Women's Club. For many years she had been in the work of the women's activities of the Sedgwick County Farm Bureau and a leader in the Waco 4-H Club work.

Jan 5, 1929 "Returned from four days with Bess in Ponca. Such a lovely visit. Ruth and Charles are going to Houston - then England. Good bye!"

OBITUARY: Mrs. Bess H. Burger Dies Here Thursday
Mrs. Bess Henthorne Burger died at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Newton Memorial Hospital after an illness of about a year. She had been a resident of Kansas City until coming to Winfield in September to make her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Swisher-Taylor funeral home with Rev. Harold M. Parker Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. The family requests no flowers, that instead contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Burger was born in Winfield, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Henthorne. She left Winfield 25 years ago and for 22 years had been employed by the Phillips Petroleum Co. in Kansas City. She was a member of the Jane Phillips sorority. When in Winfield before, she was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Inez H. Paton; a sister-in-law, Mrs. June Henthorne; 2 nieces, Mrs. Walter Dillion of Winfield and Mrs. Kenneth Fisher of Wichita; 2 nephews, Robert Abildgaard of Wichita and John Abildgaard of Hutchinson.

OBITUARY: Mrs. Inez H. Paton Dies at Hospital

Mrs. Inez H. Paton, 75, died at 8:20 a.m. this morning at Newton Memorial hospital, where she had been a patient since Nov. 17.

Born Nov 17, 1886, in Burden, KS she was the daughter of John and Minnie Henthorne, and lived in the Winfield area all her life. She was married to James E. Paton in 1916. He died Aug. 1, 1953.

Mrs. Paton retired from her duties at the 1st National Bank Oct. 1, 1959, after 35 years. She began her career as a bookkeeper at the Winfield National Bank in 1924, and came to the 1st National Bank when it bought the Winfield National in 1945. She was a bookkeeper for 17 years and a cashier 18 years.

She was a member of 1st Presbyterian church, Order of Eastern Star, DAR, Liberal Arts club, and Rossetti circle.

Survivors include 2 nieces, Mrs. Walter Dillion of Winfield and Mrs. Kenneth Fisher of Wichita; 2 nephews, Robert W. Abildgaard of Wichita and John Abildgaard of Hutchinson; and several cousins, among them Boyd Smith of Winfield and Mrs. Roy Waters of Kansas City, MO.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Swisher-Taylor funeral home.

Franklin Baldwin Who Died Tuesday Was Born in Ohio in 1819

Franklin Baldwin, the oldest citizen in Wellsville, [Franklin Co., KS] and a resident of the town since 1882, died at his home at 2:15 Tuesday morning, [4 Jan 1916] following a general breaking down. Mr. Baldwin had been in fairly good health until two weeks ago, and during the past summer and fall had been able to do quite a little work about his home. Until two weeks ago he had been able to shave himself regularly.

He was born in Clarington, Ohio, February 9, 1819. He moved to Macon county, Missouri, after the way, and later to Shelby county, where he made his home on a farm. In the early seventies he went to Great Bend, Kans. where he bought railroad land and attempted to farm. The drou[g]th discouraged him and he returned to Missouri, locating at Pleasant Hill. In 1882 he move to Wellsville, [KS].

Mr. Baldwin was married to Mary Jane Newhouse, in October 1843. Mrs. Baldwin died in Wellsville July 6, 1885. In 1897 he was married to Martha Jane Ryan whose death occurred in November 1914. For a number of months before his death he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Carrie Inman, who came here to care for her father.

The deceased had a wagon maker's shop on the east side of Main street for many years, until age compelled him to retire from business. He took an active interest in political matters and in all his life missed but one chance to vote at a presidential election, that of four years ago, when his physical abilities had failed him so that it was inconveniet for him to get about.

He had been a member of the Baptist church for a long time, in Missouri and in Wellsville, and until quite recently was a regular attendant at church services.

Baldwin, Monte Vallo, Mo.; Albert Baldwin, Clarinda, Ia., and Mrs. Dora Baker, Portland, Ore.
