OBITUARY: Doc Henthorn Dies
Harold Roy Henthorn, known to family and friends as, "Doc," spent his childhood in the vicinity of Aurora, NE, receiving his education in the public schools. He attended the Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine and maintain a practice in Aurora, NE for many years.

From December 20, 1917 to January 5, 1919 he served in the United States Army. He served in the United States Navy from 1922 to 1926.

In 1927, with wife Lillian, he moved to Sioux City, Iowa where he served as a veterinarian until 1931 when they moved to Aurora, NE. He served the Aurora area until after World War II when he sold the practice. He then worked for several years as a federal meat inspector in a plant at Central City, NE before retirement.

Doc and his wife owned two irrigated farms in the Aurora area. At one time, one of the farms was operated as a dairy farm.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Aurora. He was a member of Aurora Lodge 68, AF&AM, the Tehama Temple of the Shrine in Hastings and the Lester S. Harter Post 42 of the American Legion.

Funeral services were held in the chapel of the Higby Mortuary. The Rev. Merwyn Davidson, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Aurora, officiating. Casketbearers were members of the Masonic Lodge: Arthur Grosshans, Reuben Johnson, Milton Madsen, Llye McConaughey, Gereon Nelson, and P.D. Wilfong, DVM.

My cousin, Wrex Henthorn, Jr. of Aurora, NE died on 13 Dec 2006 in that place at the age of 86 years.

Yesterday I added this information along with the obituary of another relative, Jack Charles Henthorn of San Antonio, TX to my own genealogy file. Jack died in San Antonio on 22 Nov 2006 at the age of 80. His obituary was previously featured in this blog.

Services Wednesday

Death of well known woman follows complications after broken hip last fall.

Mrs. C. H. Henthorn, highly respected and widely known woman of the community for 51 years, passed away last Monday morning [23 Mar 1936] at 8:00 o'clock following an illness of several months duration. Mrs. Henthorn suffered a broken hip last November and complications which developed as a result of the injury were the cause of death.

Impressive services were conducted from the Methodist Church on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 when many old friends gathered to pay their final respects to the departed.

The floral tribute was symbolic of the esteem in which Mrs. Henthorn was held.

The Reverend W. W. Whitman, pastor of the church, officiated. Music was furnished by W. H. Menzie, who sang, "Lead Kindly Light" and "The Old Rugged Cross" with Mrs. Glen Haworth at the organ.

Minerva Jane Henthorn, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Powers was born at Perry, IL on 15 Oct 1862 and departed this life at Aurora on 23 Mar 1936, at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 8 days.

Mrs. Henthorn grew to womanhood in Illinois where she followed the profession of teaching until here marriage to Charles Holt Henthorn, on 10 Feb 1885.

Their wedding trip brought them to Aurora, where they have resided for more than a half century.

A little more than a year ago, Mr. and Mrs. Henthorn happily observed their golden wedding anniversary surrounded by their children and by a host of friends.

She leaves her husband, Charles Holt Henthorn, an only daughter Mrs. Lou Retta Bradbury, three sons John Wrex, Harold Roy and Edward Charles, and five grandchildren: Gerald and Beatta Bradbury, Wrex Jr. and Dorothy Henthorn and Harold Henthorn, Jr.

Pall bearers were C. H. and J. D. Henthorn, Wrex, Harold, and Edward Henthorn and Claude Bradbury.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Henthorn of Central City and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Powers of Fremont were among the out of town relatives present.

Henthorn, Charles Holt

Pioneer Resident Taken by Death

Charles H. Henthorn, who would have reached his 85th birthday on February 10th, passed away last Sunday [20 Jan 1946] at the home of his son Wrex near Phillips after a 3 weeks illness.

Mr. Henthorn was for many years a prominent pioneer construction worker and carpenter, being a member of the firm of Johnson and Henthorn contractors. The late Joe Johnson was his partner. He was one of the builders of the Fidelity Building and others around the square as well as many Aurora residences.

Final rites were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Chapman-Higby chapel with the Rev. A.J. Rich officiating. Mrs. Lawrence Tenor and Miss Barbara Hanson, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Glen Haworth, sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "Rock of Ages."

Charles Holt Henthorn was born 10 Feb 1861 in Fishhook, IL. and departed this life on 20 Jan 1946.

He came to Aurora in 1884 and on 10 Feb 1885 his marriage to Miss Minerva Jane Powers, an Illinois school teacher took place. The couple immediately established their home here, where they lived together for 51 years. Her death occurred on 23 Mar 1936.

One daughter and three sons were born to this union, all of whom survive. They are Lou Retta Bradbury of San Diego, California, Wrex Henthorn and Doctor Harold Henthorn both of Aurora, and Edward Charles Henthorn of Bellevue, NE.

Jack Charles Henthorn

Jack Charles Henthorn, 80, passed away November 22, 2006, at Wilford Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, TX, from complications of myleodysplastic syndrome.

He was born February 5, 1926, in Grant, NE, the third of five children born to Charlie and Florence (Williamson) Henthorn.

He joined the Army Air Corps upon graduation from Venango (NE) High School in 1943. He served for 30 years, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1977. His assignments included Arizona, Texas, New York, Colorado, Nebraska, England, Bermuda, Labrador and Guam. He was especially proud of his 25 years in the Strategic Air Command, which included serving on the Airborne Command Post, better known as The Looking Glass.

He married Shirley Cox on December 28, 1951, in Grant, NE. They had five children: Christopher, Bradley, Robin, Shelley and Kelley.

Jack and Shirley moved to San Antonio in 1976 for his Air Force retirement. He was an avid bowler, a Nebraska Cornhuskers football fan (GO BIG RED!) and a first-rate auto mechanic. He later worked for Bruce Construction in Seguin, TX, then taught automotive mechanics at Texas Vocational School in San Antonio. He also worked for Alamo Concessions at Brackenridge Park as a mechanic. Jack and Shirley joined St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in 1982, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, sister Barbara Robinson, brother Don Henthorn, and brothers-in-law Dick Robinson, Cliff Humphrey, and Eugene Bowman.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley, and their children Christopher of Grant, NE, Bradley of Houston, TX, Robin and wife Valerie of Fort Worth, TX, Shelley and husband Rick Kendall of San Antonio, TX, and Kelley and husband Tim Morrison of San Antonio, TX. Grandchildren Adam and Brian Henthorn, Cameron, Emily, Frances and Dylan Kendall, and Brett Morrison also survive him. His sisters Betty Humphrey of Fort Worth, TX and Dorothy Bowman of Wichita Falls, TX, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, survive him.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Wilford Hall Hematology/Oncology Unit and the 6th floor BMT for their excellent care and support, especially Dr. Mark DeLeon, SrA Latoya Seals, SMSGT Frank Stamp and nurses Jennifer, Barbara, Vicki, Lisandra and Jan.

A Rosary will be recited Tuesday, November 28 at 7 pm at Castle Ridge Mortuary, 8008 Military Drive West. The Mass of Resurrection will be offered Wednesday, November 29 at 10:00 am at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. In accordance with his wishes, Jack was cremated.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name are suggested to Saint Rose of Lima Building Fund, 9883 Marbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78245. Castle Ridge Mortuary.
