He was a truck driver for Griffith Brothers, Wheeling, and a Protestant.

He was preceded in death by a daughter.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Rine Hall; two sons, Dallas of Triadelphia and Dale of Wheeling; a daughter, Mrs. Keith (Carolyn) Baron of Triadelphia; two brothers, Thomas of Wheeling and Carl of Cameron; three sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Virginia) Henry of Moundsville, Mrs. Paul (Lucy) Boisvert of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Ben (Delores) Lewis of New Martinsville; seven grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.

Services were held at the convenience of the family.  Interment was in Stone Church cemetery, Wheeling [WV].

OBITUARY:
Robert E. Dillon, 63, 24 Delding Eastway Court, Greenfield, died Sunday [6 Jun 1982] in Community Hospital, Indianapolis, [IN] after a six-month illness.

He was born in Delaware County, [IN] [19 Mar 1919] attended schools at Royerton and graduated from Goldsmith High School in Tipton County.

He had been a farmer for 15 years in Delaware and Randolph Counties and later was employed with the Farm Bureau Co-op in Muncie where he also served on the board.

Mr. Dillon moved to Indianapolis where he was a home improvement salesman and for the past year was employed with Central Hardware in Indianapolis.

He was a former member of Muncie Moose Lodge 33.

Surviving are his wife, Lois; two sons, Ronald E. Dillon, Muncie, and Lowell E. Dillon, Columbus; a daughter, Mrs. David (Rose Ellen) Hart, R.R.1, Farmland; a sister, Mrs. Edith Lindsey, Muncie; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Flora M. Lee, 65, a lifelong Delaware County [IN] resident, died Wednesday morning [9 Jun 1971] in her Muncie home of an apparent heart attack. Mrs. Lee was a member of Southeast Church of Christ. [Born, 4 May 1906 in Delaware Co., IN]

Her husband, Charles, died a month ago.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Edith Lindsey, Muncie, and a brother, Robert E. Dillon, Indianapolis.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Parson Mortuary.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of the funeral home. Roger E. Michael, minister of the Southeast Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Eaton.

Mrs. Reta Fawcett Moore will play the wedding march and accompany Mrs. Louise Frazier Byrum, who will sing several solo numbers.

After the ceremony luncheon will be served.  Covers will be arranged for immediate members of the two families and members of the bridal party.

Later Rev. Brown and his bride will leave for a wedding trip, keeping their destination a secret.

Miss Rine is the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Foster L. Rine of Moundsville.  She attended West Liberty Normal School and was formerly a faculty member of the Marshall county schools.  For the past two years she has been secretary to pastor of Fourth street Methodist church.

Rev. Brown is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Brown of Warwood.  He graduated from Wheeling High School, Allegheny College at Meadville, Pa., and Boston University, school of theology.  He is a member of the West Virginia conference, Methodist Episcopal church and has been pastor at Alma and Corinth. At present he is pastor of the Fulton-Greggsville church. Dorothy Elizabeth Rine Brown, author, genealogist and church worker, died Thursday [10 Oct 1985] in Wheeling Hospital at the age of 81.

The daughter of the late Foster L. and Katherine Jane Schultz Rine, Mrs. Brown was born Sept. 16, 1904 in Moundsville, [WV].

She received her West Virginia teaching certificate in 1922 and served as a teacher and principal in Marshall County from 1922 to 1927.

She was secretary of the Fourth Street Methodist Episcopal Church in Wheeling from 1928-1930.  She was the church historian and certified lay speaker for the Warwood United Methodist Church in 1961.  She also was included in the biography in Who's Who in the Methodist Church in 1966.

Mrs. Brown was secretary of youth work for the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society in the Wheeling District from 1930-1932; she was sponsor, Pi Chapter of Kappa Phi, West Virginia University, Morgantown (Methodist Women Sorority), from 1931-1933; and taught several Bible classes and Sunday school classes for men and for young people.

She was a member of Federated Woman's Club, serving in various capacities in several West Virginia communities.  She also was a member of the Wheeling - Ohio County Genealogy Society in 1975 and a member of the Civil Air Patrol Auxiliary of the USAF, Webster Springs, from 1954-1955.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Durwood [sic] Brown, in 1983, and four brothers, John, Foster, Lowell, and Paul Rine.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Foster Lloyd Brown of Oneonta, N.Y., and David Wilson Rine Brown of Hampstead, Md.; a daughter, Mary Jane Madjlessi of Oakland, Calif.; two brothers, Edison C. OBITUARY: Dorothy Rine Brown Died; Many Accomplishments One of the area's most highly accomplished women, Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Rine Brown, 81, author, genealogist, church worker and widow of the late Reverend Durward Belmont Brown, suffered a stroke Tuesday October 8, [1985] while leading a discussion on "Communication" with the United Methodist Women of the Warwood Church.  She was taken to Wheeling hospital where she died Thursday.

She was a person of industry and surprisingly broad range of interests.  Her daughter Mary commented, 'As I go thru her things I keep being amazed at all the things she knew about.  People who are always learning thru their lives, are happy people.'

She was born in Moundsville, [WV] Sept. 16, 1904, daughter of the late Foster L. and Katherine Jane Schultz Rine.  The parents had thirteen children, eleven of whom grew to adulthood; and they were a prominent and colorful family. Foster Sr. was a teacher, and served in the West Virginia Legislature.

She earned a WV Elementary Teacher certificate when she was 18, taught in elementary schools in Marshall county for four years, and was a principal another year.  In that time she was improving herself with extension courses from West Liberty.

Then in 1927 she left the schools, went to Elliott School of Commerce in Wheeling, where she was given recognition as first student in the school's history to achieve 100 percent in all tests in "The Theory and Art of Shorthand."  This led to a position as secretary of Fourth Street Methodist church in Wheeling (Chapline street was once named '4th street' hence the church name); and she met and married Rev. Brown who at the time was pastor of the Fulton church.

Then followed a third of a century career as they served a total of ten Methodist charges around this state: Wesley Foundation at West Virginia University, Gassaway, Philippi, St. Paul's in Grafton, Central in Center Wheeling, Shinnston, Sabra in Morgantown (near to, but not in, Sabraton), Webster Springs, Riverside-Pisgah (Morgantown area), and Elizabeth.

Upon retirement in 1961 they settled in Warwood, but that didn't mean the end of activity.  They participated in the affairs of Warwood church.  He continued an active life and supplied various church pulpits in the area, including Benwood, where she is listed as having been teacher of the Men's Adult Bible class for a couple of years.  She was a Certified Lay Speaker, and historian of the Warwood church.

She had interests in sewing and astronomy, and taught astronomy for merit badge work to various Girl and Boy Scout troops.  She is perhaps best known now, as genealogist and author of the 'Bonar Family Genealogy.'  She had just completed a Brown Family genealogy a few days before her death.

In addition to all this, and rearing three children, there are many items to be gleaned from a Methodist who's who book, such as: Member Civil Air Patrol, Webster Springs 1954-55; member of garden clubs in various towns they resided in; American Iris Society, vice president of Short Creek Homemakers in Ohio county, Huguenot Society of America, on board of Scotts Run Settlement House near Morgantown, secretary Women's Christian Temperance Union in Grafton, teacher Young Adult Sunday School class in Shinnston, Girls counselor Epworth League Institute at Buckhannon, etc., etc.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983, and by four brothers: John, Foster, Lowell and Paul Rine.

Surviving are her children: Dr. Foster Lloyd Brown of Oneonta, NY, Mrs. Mary Jane Madjlessi of Oakland, Ca and David Wilson Rine Brown of Hampstead, MD; two brothers, Edison C. Mrs. Brown had arranged that her body should be given to the West Virginia School of Medicine for scientific purposes.  Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery beside her husband.

BIOGRAPHY: Foster Rine spent his youth on the farm, attended Marshall County Schools and West Liberty State Normal School; was knowledgeable and progressive in his thinking and widely known, having taught in Marshall County Schools for forty years (rural and city) - thirty-four as elementary teacher, and six as principal.  He was a staunch Republican: served four years on the Republican Executive Committee; elected to West Virginia House of Delegates, 1924-25; served on the Agriculture Education, Prohibition, Temperance, and Military Affairs Committees, and was Chairman of the Committee on Federal Relations.

Foster Lincoln Rine, 64, died Thursday night [20 Sep 1934 at Moundsville, Marshall Co., WV] at six o'clock at his home on Short Center street.  He had been ill for two years.

Mr. Rine was born [14 Aug 1870 at Rosbys Rock, Marshall Co., WV] and spent his entire life in Marshall county.  He was instructor in Marshall county schools for forty years, and was a Spanish - American war veteran, being a member of Company M, First W.Va. Volunteers.

Mr. Rine represented Marshall county in the legislature in 1925 and 1926, being elected on the Republican ticket.  He also served a number of years as a guard at the state penitentiary.

He was a member of Calvary M.E. church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Katherine Schultz Rine and the following eleven sons and daughters: John Rine, deputy U.S. clerk of Elkins; Mrs. Dorothy Brown, wife of Rev. Durward B. Brown of Gassaway, W.Va.; Lowell, Foster, Jr., Edison, Paul and Reed at home, and Misses Olive, Beulah, Lillian and Marjorie Rine, also at home; one brother, Theodore Rine, of Long Beach, a Washington, D.C. suburb

It is with sadness that I report the death of Clarice Vivian (Eller) Stanley on 23 Dec 2014 (probably at Martins Ferry, Belmont Co., OH).  She was born on 8 Nov 1923 in Taylors Ridge, Marshall Co., WV a daughter of Berrell and Florence Arlena (Blake) Eller.

I had the privilege of meeting Clarice Stanley at one of the Yoho Family Reunions in New Martinsville, WV. We went on to collaborate on the compilation of an updated version of the Rine / Ryan family history that she produced from the papers of Dorothy (Rine) Brown.

The obituary appeared in the 26 December 2014 issue of The Intelligence - Wheeling News Register.

BIOGRAPHY:
James Miller Rine, son of George and Elizabeth Miller Rine was born on Games Ridge, Marshall Co., VA, October 4, 1856 and died March 21, 1928, aged 72 years. He was a member of a large pioneer family, mostly German descent. He was married to Mary B. Wellman, Sept. 1, 1878. They went to house-keeping on her father's farm where they lived for several years. Then he moved to Wells, 7 miles from Cameron and near Fish Creek.

He received his education in the public schools of Marshall county. Late in life he attended 4 semesters at West Liberty College. He began teaching at the age of 22. The first school was Mountain Hill, which was quite a distance from where they lived, but he made the trip every day. He continued teaching for over 50 years, with the exception of 4 years he was elected County Supt. of Schools. Also, one fal he contracted typhoid fever and missed teaching that year. He taught several terms of summer school and also finished a term of school at Garrett Station, which is now Woodruff. The teacher, Everett Criswell died before the end of the term.

He was a close student of the Bible and became a Gospel preacher and preached on Lord's Days for many years.

In 1918, when Mr. Scott Powell had the History of Marshall County written, through the influence of Walter R.A. Morris, a very bright energetic young lawyer, they had trouble in getting it published. It had taken sometime to get it written and Mr. Morris had died of influenza; so the matter of getting it published remained a matter of uncertainty, till in the early days of autum 1924 when J.M. Rine took up the matter and decided to fill the place left vacant by Mr. Morris; - and to him and his unbounded energy rests the credit of having it published after 4 years of disappointments to the writer.

He taught the Big Run School and he related at one term, he had 21 Mathews's and there were three Mary Mathews's. In 1904 he removed the family to Bowman Ridge, near Glen Easton, and died on the home place in 1928. OBITUARY: J.M. Rine Expires at Farm Home - Veteran Teacher and Revered Citizen Closes Career.
James Miller Ryan [sic], one of Marshall county's most widely known and revered citizens, died last evening at 10 o'clock in his farm home on Bowman Ridge, near Glen Easton following an illness and pneumonia.

Death closed a most useful career in the passing of Mr. Rine. He was a life-long resident of Marshall county, and devoted almost a half century to teaching rural schools.

He was a minister in the Church of Christ, and often conducted services in churches of that denomination about the county. At one time Mr. Rine's warm interest in the education of the county's youth was recognized by the voters, and he was elected to the post of county superintendent of schools, serving one term.

Only recently the Marshall County Teachers Institute paid tribute to Mr. Rine as a veteran school teacher, and he was declared to be the only educator in the county holding the distinction of having taught pupils in three generations of some families in the county. His last work as a school teacher was done at Gorby school, Meade district.

Mr. Rine's interest in county affairs extended into the city of Moundsville, and he was a stockholder and director in both the Marshall County Band the the City & County Bank.

James Miller Rine was in his seventy-second year. He was born on Rine's Ridge, Franklin district on October 4, 1856, the son of the late George Rine and Elizabeth Miller Rine. He received his early education in the common schools of that district, but was ever striving for further knowledge, and only a few years ago enrolled at West Liberty state normal school for a summer course.

Mr. Rine is survived by his wife, Mary B. Wellman Rine, three sons, Roscoe, at home, Arthur, of Moundsville, and Otis, who resides on a farm adjoining the homestead farm on Bowman Ridge; five daughters, Mrs. Addie Heath, of Fork Ridge, Mrs. Lucy Conner, Mrs. Charles E. Cunningham, and Mrs. Clem Young, of Moundsville, and Mrs. Austa Holmes, of Cecil Ridge.

The following brothers and sisters also survive: Foster Rine, of Moundsville, Gilmore Rine, of Bowman Ridge, T.W. Rine of Long Beach, Washington, Mrs. Nancy Schaffer of Pittsburgh, Mrs. H.A. BIOGRAPHY: Foster Rine spent his youth on the farm, attended Marshall County Schools and West Liberty State Normal School; was knowledgeable and progressive in his thinking and widely known, having taught in Marshall County Schools for forty years (rural and city) - thirty-four as elementary teacher, and six as principal. He was a staunch Republican: served four years on the Republican Executive Committee; elected to West Virginia House of Delegates, 1924-25; served on the Agriculture Education, Prohibition, Temperance, and Military Affairs Committees, and was Chairman of the Committee on Federal Relations. Fatal to Popular Citizen; Was War Veteran
Foster Lincoln Rine, 64, died Thursday night at six o'clock at his home on Short Center street. He had been ill for two years.

Mr. Rine was born and spent his entire life in Marshall county. He was instructor in Marshall county schools for forty years, and was a Spanish - American war veteran, being a member of Company M, First W.Va. Volunteers.

Mr. Rine represented Marshall county in the legislature in 1925 and 1926, being elected on the Republican ticket. He also served a number of years as a guard at the state penitentiary.

He was a member of Calvary M.E. church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Katherine Schultz Rine and the following eleven sons and daughters: John Rine, deputy U.S. clerk of Elkins; Mrs. Dorothy Brown, wife of Rev. Durward B. Brown of Gassaway, W.Va.; Lowell, Foster, Jr., Edison, Paul and Reed at home, and Misses Olive, Beulah, Lillian and Marjorie Rine, also at home; one brother, Theodore Rine, of Long Beach, a Washington, D.C. suburb [Note: The phrase, "a Washington, D.C. suburb," is probably an error. Theodore Rine lived at Long Beach in the state of Washington. REH]; and four sisters, Mrs. Nancy Schaffer of California; Mrs. Sarah Richmond, Glen Easton; Mrs. Phoebe Cox, Moundsville and Mrs. Alice Marshall, Wheeling.

The body was removed to the Lutes funeral home.

PUBLIC_SERVICE: During WWII, for 30 months, he wrote letters that were sent out monthly to 1,000 servicement and women. While troops were being trained in the mountains around Elkins, [WV], he established contact with Masons and cooked meals twice a week for them.

HONORS: He was selected outstanding citizen during the Lewis Co., West Virginia Centennial; listed in "Personalities of the South," 1968-1969 edition; the "Congressional Record," for 26 Feb 1968 carries a two column entry by Senator Jennings Randolph, telling of his activities on behalf of "the mountain state."

John W. Rine Dies Last Friday While Visiting Daughter, Buried in Philippi

John W. Rine, 73, a resident of 703 Lynn Avenue, Weston, and a former resident of Philippi, died at 6 a.m., Friday, February 25, 1977, while visiting at the home of his daughter in Salem, Ohio. His death was unexpected.

Mr. Rine was known throughout the country as West Virginia's "Good Will Ambassador," a title affectionately afforded him for his outstanding promotion of the state and its scenic beauty. He had been featured in articles in 14 daily and weekly newspapers in West Virginia. His articles had also appeared in 10 newspapers in South Dakota.

He had prints of historical and nature study which he sent to people throughtout the United States. He had compiled a slide presentation that had been shown in five states. He had made more that 100 appearances in clubs, lodges, schools and other organizations, three television appearances and 32 radio broadcasts promoting West Virginia.

He had received many honors from the citizens of Lewis County, in which he made his home, as well as being appointed a general by former Govenor Hulett C. Smith, and was presented Distinguished Citizenship Award from former Governor Arch A. Moore. He received the Order of the White Buffalo from the governor of South Dakota. The State Department of Natural Resources cited him for outstanding service to the state and in particular for being responsible for 3,000 subscriptions to the magazine "Wild, Wonderful West Virginia," published by the department.

He received the Merit Award from the Black Hills Badlands and Lakes Association for unusual contributions to South Dakota tourism in that state. He was honored many times in various organizations for contributions and outstanding services.

In 1964, the Marshall County, [WV] native wrote the "Little Old Train That Talks With Boys and Girls," a story about the Cass scenic railroad, written especially for children. Several thousand copies of this publication, along with many other articles, humorous stories and pictures were distributed to another group of Mr. Rine's favorite people, the patients in the Shrine Hospitals for crippled and burned children in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

He sent more than 200,000 pieces of literature to the VA Hospitals, senior citizen centers, rest homes, shut-ins and the elderly. More than 25,000 known recipes of West Virginia were sent throughout the United States. For six years he financed and operated the West Virginia Room in Weston, as both a museum and distribution point to further promote West Virginia.

During World War II, he published 40 letters over a period of 30 months, sending 1,200 copies per issue to servicement in the various theaters of operation.

John W. Rine was born in Marshall County, February 26, 1903, a son of the late Foster and Kathryn Rine. On June 1, 1926, he was married to Edna Roach, of Philippi, who survives.

Also are one daughter, Mrs. John (Mary Margaret) Christy, Salem, Ohio; one son Major William D. Rine, serving with the U.S. Air Force; four brothers, Foster Rine, Lowell Rine, and Reed Rine, all of Glendale, and Edison Rine, Wellsburg; five sisters, Mrs. Stanley Wilson, Beaver, Pa., Mrs. Durwood [sic] Brown, Warwood, Mrs. Beulah Barnes, Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Rolland Percival, Palm Springs, Calif., and Miss Lillian Rine; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son and one brother.

Mr. Rine was a member of the St. Matthew UM Church at Weston, [WV]; a member and past master of Elkins Lodge No. 108, AF&AM, Elkins, member and high priest of Elkins Chapter No. 35, Royal Arch Masons, Elkins; a past district deputy grand master, Grand Lodge of West Virginia, AF&FM, and a trustee, of State of West Virginia.

Mr. and Mrs. Rine had lived in Philippi, Belington, and Elkins, and presently were living in Weston. He retired in 1968 from the West Virginia Coal and Coke Corporation and the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation as a tax agent.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 1, from the Floyd Funeral Home in Weston, at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Robert Chandler officiating. Interment followed in the Philippi Masonic Cemetery.
