OBITUARY:
Rachel Matilda Goddard, age 76 years, wife of Moses Goddard of New Martinsville (Route 1), West Virginia, died at her home Monday evening [22 May 1939] at 10 o'clock following an illness of six weeks. The remains were removed to the Wharton Funeral Home and prepared for burial and were returned to her late residence Wednesday afternoon.

Funeral services were held on Thursday at 2 o'clock at the Paden Fork Chapel by Rev. R. B. Carver. Burial followed in the Kendall Cemetery.

Mrs. Goddard was born in Proctor District [Wetzel Co., WV, Abt. 1863], the daughter of Elias Hafer [and Sarah J. Morrison].

In addition to her husband [Moses Benton Goddard], she is survived by four sons, Charles Goddard, Wilford Goddard, and Lawrence Goddard of New Martinsville Route 1, and Andy Goddard of Midvale, Ohio. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. One brother, Bruce Hafer, of Jackson county, West Virginia, also survives.

OCALA [FL] - John Kenneth Goddard, 71, a retired chemical engineer for PPG Industries in Natrium, VV. Va., died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Estelle’s Hospice House [Ocala, Marion Co., FL].

A native of Newdale, W. Va.. he moved here from New Martinsville, W. Va., In 1985.

Mr. Goddard was a member of Central Christian Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a companion, Elizabeth Hager, Ocala; son, Kenneth Ly Goddard, Ocala; daughters, Cathie Robbins, McMechen, W. Va, Linda Muiznieks and Rebecca Goddard, Winchester, Va., sisters, Martha Metis, Proctor, W. Va. and Mary Renner, Garrettsville, Ohio; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

RESEARCHER: Denver C. Yoho writes:  Samuel Goddard of California submitted a large history of the Goddard and related families on 13 Nov 1899 when he was 69 years of age. His history has been a great help in researching these families. He probably made these records long after he left Virginia and errors have been found in them.

HISTORY:  THE SAMUEL GODARD LETTER

The following brief history is the memories and relationship of myself, Samuel Godard with the Yoho, Garner, Baker, Goddard, Fair, and many other families.

I was born January 13, 1830 on Fish Creek, three miles above its mouth, in Marshall County, Virginia, now West Virginia.

I wish to state that I was personally acquainted with Henry Yoho, herein mentioned, as I boarded at his home three months while going to school when I was about 10 years old.

The old gentleman would tell me Indian stories, till I was afraid to look out of the window.  One story in particular I wish to relate here.

When he was an especial associate of Louis Wetzel, Adam Poe, Simon Gerty [probably spelled, Girty], and other Indian fighters, and had their headquarters at Fort Wheeling, where the city of Wheeling now stands.

He and five other Indian scouts or hunters started from the fort one morning and rode down to Grave Creek, or Moundsville as it is now called, on a hunt for Indians.  They hunted all day and on their return in the evening about 3 or 4 miles above Moundsville, they were attacked by about a dozen Indians.

The man that was riding in front was shot down, and Henry Yoho was next riding a black mare which was shot through the neck and fell with its rider and falling on his foot, held him fast till the Indians got within ten steps of him, the other four men having fled.

All at once, his horse rallied and sprang to her feet and saved her rider.  As the mare rose, several tomahawks flew past Yoho's head, but he escaped unhurt. The old gentleman told many other Indian stories too numerous to mention.

Henry Yoho --- my great-grandfather on my mother's side, was born about 1765.  Raised one son and six daughters, namely---

Now whereas my name appears in this history and all of my other business Godard and all the others Goddard except my brother Joshua is this.

When we were young men, there were three Joshua Goddards that spelled their names all alike and so to make a distinction between them and us, we dropped one of the middle d's out and have so signed our names ever since. Nevertheless, my six sons have adopted the old style of spelling the name, but I shall continue to sign my name short one d the balance of my days.

Now as regards the nationality of the Goddard family---would say--from the best information I can gather from all sources, the name Goddard originated in France and the Goddard people emigrated to England and from there to America and settled, I think, in Eastern PA until the days of John Goddard, my great grandfather, who settled in Western, PA, Greene County, as before stated.

In conclusion, I wish to say with reference to the Yoho family, that I have never heard, in all my life - reading or otherwise, the name of Yoho applied to anyone, except in the person of Henry and Peter Yoho, as before mentioned or their descendants.  I think they were of PA German descent.

They settled in an early day on the Ohio River or Fish Creek near the mouth, in Marshall Co., VA, now WV. and most of their posterity have stayed in the same county ever since.

As a rule the Yoho family was industrious good people and rather inclined to be non-migratory.

From the facts that I have understood, there were seventy-two (72) Yoho voters [who] voted in one precinct, twelve miles square, on the same day, in said county.

Goddard Cemetery

There are two Goddard Cemeteries in Wetzel county, West Virginia. They are usually confusingly known as Goddard Cemetery. Linda (Goddard) Stout, to reduce confusion, calls one of them the Old Goddard Cemetery and the other the New Goddard Cemetery. The two cemeteries are located in the same area. In fact, Route 89 divides the fields in which the two cemeteries lie.

The Old Goddard Cemetery is located at the upper end of a meadow (now wooded) which was originally part of the old Goddard homestead. The land, is probably owned, as of 2002, by Clyde and Lisa (Kocher) Stillion. Lisa is a granddaughter of Woodrow Garner. She is the daughter of Eldon and Ardith (Garner) Kocher.

The New Goddard Cemetery is located about 1/4 mile out Nicely Ridge on the property of Linda Stout's uncle, Robert "Bob" Allen Goddard.

OBITUARY: Nicholas H. Goddard was born February 25, 1868 and departed this life January 5, 1943, aged 75 years, 10 months and 11 days.

Surviving are the following children: Thurman L. and Roy O., of New Dale, WV; Mrs. Nola Hawkey, Long Beach, California; Mrs. Nora Mason and Mrs. Ola Allen, Detroit, Mich.; Webster E., of Moundsville, WV; Mrs. Bessie Goudy, Warwood, WV; Mrs. Mildred Bitely, Jackson, Michigan; and Woodrow of Detroit, Michigan.

A son Earny J. preceded him in death several years ago at the age of 15 months.

He also leaves 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild and many other relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

Mr. Goddard had lived the latter nineteen years of his life in Moundsville, spending the greater part of his life in Wetzel County. He was a member of the Palestine church when a young man, later uniting with the Church of Christ at Moundsville. He had been in failing health for the past nine years.

Funeral services were held at his home on Annadale avenue, Thursday at 1:00 o'clock, conducted by Brother D.C. Hadwin of the Wheeling Church of Christ. Interment was made in the Goddard cemetery, with E.L. Mason, undertaker, in charge.

OBITUARY-ERROR: There is an error in the obituary of Nicholas Hitch Goddard. The obituary states that he died at the age of 75 years, 10 months, 11 days. If the dates of birth and death listed, 25 Feb 1868 and 5 Jan 1943, are correct he lived to be 74 years, 10 months, 11 days.

COMMENT:
The first church was the Palestine Church [in the Marion, WV area] which first met in the home of Joseph Walker with Harrison Yoho preacher. Later at the other end of the settlement the Rockport Church was started at the foot of the Nicely Hill. At that time the road went past the Laurel Point Cemetery up the creek with several families living there.

BIOGRAPHY: Hardesty Extract

Harrison Yoho was a son of pioneer settlers of this district, and was born in Wetzel County, November 16, 1816. George and Jane (Hartley) Yoho were his parents, and he is a grandson of Henry Yoho, who was a contemporary of Lewis Wetzel, and the first settler in what is now Proctor District, Wetzel County, W.Va. Henry Yoho fought the Indians in Ohio County, Virginia (West), and all along the River. He and his wife were buried in this county, as was their son George, father of Harrison.

In Wetzel county, March 22, 1838, Harrison Yoho and Martha Goddard were married, and their children are four living and one deceased, namely:

Matilda, born January 20, 1839, married Wesley Garloch and lives in
this county;

Raliegh W., born May 24, 1840, married Jemima J. Laflen, and lives in
this district;

Henry H., born January 22, 1842, whose first wife was Margaret Goddard,
second wife, Mary E. Wade, with whom he is living in this district;

Joanna, born January 11, 1844, died in December 1848;

James B., born January 17, 1849 married Sarah A. Garloch and lives in
Belmont County, Ohio.

Mr. and Mrs. Yoho also adopted one child, Hannah E. Givens, born in 1859.

Twenty-three grandchildren have been born to Mr. & Mrs. Yoho, of whom nineteen are living, and they have one great-grandchild.

Harrison Yoho was ordained to the ministry in the Church of the Disciples, as elder, in November 1857, commencing to preach at that time. In all the subsequent years his labors have been owned and blessed, and he is now the oldest minister of that faith in Wetzel County. He has a farm in Proctor District and receives his mail at Halls Mills, Wetzel County, West Virginia.

OCCUPATION-CHURCH_AFFILIATION:
According to Joanne (Pauley) Kelley: Harrison Yoho rode circuit with Alexander Campbell, who started the restoration movement in the Presbyterian Church. There were called the Church of the Disciples, but later it was believed that Campbell went too far, and those that didn't believe as he did became the Church of Christ. Among these were H. Yoho.


Problem: Was the date of death, 4 Nov 1895, age 78, at home in Wetzel Co., WV as reported by Myrna Goddard? Or was the date of death 4 Apr 1895 in Wetzel Co., WV as reported by others? The obituary lists, 4 Apr 1895 at the home of his son, Henry.


OBITUARY:
On April 4, 1895, at the home of his son Henry, the goodly spirit of Bro. Harrison Yoho was released from this world for its bright home in heaven, having reached the 81st. year of his age. He was born and raised in Wetzel County, W.Va. and died near the place of his birth.

His Christian wife was 74 years old at the time of her death, whose spirit preceded his to the spirit land about five months. Their family consisted of five children- three sons and two daughters, one of the latter having also passed over the river, only to welcome the father and mother into their celestial home in heaven. The rest remain to mourn their loss. But they had the pleasure before they left this world of seeing all their children obey the call of their Master, and become members of the one body.

Bro. Yoho had been a preacher of the gospel of Christ for over fifty years, and was widely known and tenderly loved by his brethren, and was held in high esteem by the world, as a worthy godly man. As a preacher he was like the apostle Paul; he determined to know nothing but Christ, and him crucified. He was always ready at any call, day or night to go. He never kept any memoranda of his work, but we are safe in saying that those who were made to rejoice in a Savior's love under his preaching would run up into the thousands, having organized the greater number of the congregations in this and adjoining counties.

The writer conducted the funeral services in the presence of a host of sorrowing friends and relatives. His remains were interred in Antioch cemetery by the side of his beloved companion, there to await the sounding of the last trumpet when the dead in Christ shall rise first to receive a crown of righteousness.

CEMETERY: Tombstone at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery, Wetzel Co., WV reads:
HARRISON; YOHO; DIED; APR 4, 1895; AGED 81 YRS.; 6MONS. 26DS.; I have fought a good fight; with the gospel ?; And thousands I have; led to the Lord.
