OBITUARY:
Clinton Riggs Henthorn, 67, of 138 Clara St., Weirton, [WV], died Thursday, [Sept. 26, 1974] at Weirton General Hospital.  He was born on 6 Apr 1907.  He was a Methodist by faith and a retired employee of the Weirton Steel Co.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Pearl Ash Henthorn, one daughter, Mrs. James M. (Patsy) Saffel of Weirton; one son, Carl R. of Allegan, Mich.; one brother, Frederick of Newell, W.Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Georgia Estlack of New Martinsville and Mrs. Frank (Mary) Ash of Joseph Mills, W.Va.

Friends received at the Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, Penco Road, Weirton, 7-9 p.m. Friday and 1-3 Saturday.  The body will be taken to the Furbee Funeral Home, Alma W.Va. where friends will be received Saturday at 7 p.m., where services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m.  Interment in Beechwood Cemetery, Alma, W.Va.  The Middlebourne Lodge AF & AM will conduct Masonic graveside services.

Miss Hazel Henthorn, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Henthorn, was quietly married to James Barton at 9 a.m., Thursday, May 28, at the Baptist parsonage in Kearney.  Rev. Paul V. Goodwin, pastor, officiated with Mr. and Mrs. Ben Leake of Kearney as the only attendants.

The bride was attired in a wine colored chiffon dress with finger tip jacket of the same material, white accessories and wore a nosegay of white rose buds and sweetpeas at the throat.  The groom wore grey.

Mrs. Barton attended the Central City school, graduating with the class of 1930, attended the State Teachers college at Kearney one year and since then has been assistant registrar at the Teachers college in Kearney.  She was taking music and accountant work along with regular duties.

Mr. Barton is a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Barton, Rs., of Kearney.  He is working for a degree in dramatics at the State Teachers college and assisting part time at one of the Safeway stores.

Mr. and Mrs. Barton spent the week-end in the city with her parents and returned to Kearney, where they will continue with their work. (Source:  news clipping hand dated 1936)

For more than 50 years, Hazel Barton has written articles and essays that deal with everything from aging, to animals, to famous places, to living in Texas and Nebraska, to her own reflections on life. These were most recently published in the San Marcos Record in San Marcos, Texas. Her articles became so popular that people waited anxiously for her next editorial for it always dealt with the human spirit in a way that was clearly unique. A favorite was her series with "Spook," her cat, always on hand to help her clarify her philosophy. Hazel's life has almost spanned the century, and her wisdom is precious, indeed. For years I have enjoyed Hazel Barton's articles in the San Marcos Record. Now I have many of her works in one book. I couldn't be more thrilled! RELATIONSHIP: 

Genealogy researcher, Richard E. Henthorn and Hazel Josephine (Henthorn) Barton were second cousins.  Their common ancestors were their great-grandparents, John Henthorn and Betty Holt of Pike County, Illinois.

Hazel Josephine Barton was born to Earl and Gertrude Henthorn in a farm house near  Aurora, Nebraska, November 7, 1912. Over 100 years, her life's journey included residences  of varying lengths of time In Aurora, Bayard, Grand Island, Central City, and Kearney,  Nebraska; Ann Arbor, Michigan: Waco, Texas; Sterling and Lawrence, Kansas; Stillwater,  Oklahoma; Cambridge, Massachusetts; San Marcos, Texas. Her final move in 1949 was to the  banks of the Blanco River near San Marcos where she put down roots, real ones and  figurative ones, until her death on January 12, 2013.

She completed eight grades in one-room country schoolhouses. She was graduated from the Central City (Nebraska) High school at the top of her class in 1930. She took advantage of a  scholarship to attend Kearney (Nebraska) State Teachers College. At the end of the school  year she was offered a position as Assistant Registrar, a position which she held for seven  years. In 1938-39 she attended the United Presbyterian College in Sterling, Kansas.

Other employment for varying lengths of time: University of Michigan; Office of Admissions,  National Bar Association, Ann Arbor, Michigan; Harvard University Office of Ad missions,  Cambridge, Massachusetts; Secretary to the Wing Adjutant and the civilian contractor at  Gary Army Air Field; Secretary to the President, San Marcos Baptist Academy; Secretary to  the Director of the Regional Office of Economic Opportunity, Austin, Texas; interim secretary  to the President of Southwest Texas State University. During the war years she worked as a  volunteer nurse's aide in the Stillwater (Oklahoma) Hospital and as a paid aide in the  Plainview (Texas) Hospital.

She was married to James G. Barton on May 28, 1936. Mr. Barton founded and chaired the  Theatre Department at Texas State University for decades. They celebrated their sixtieth  anniversary seven months before his death on December 13, 1996.

She became a member of the First Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School class in  June, 1952. She was active in the church choir for thirty years.

Music was an important part of her life. Even in her nineties, she could remember a few lines  from a song about Peter Pumpkin that she sang to a candle-lit jack-o-lantern when she was  seven. She was active in church and high school and college choirs. She sang the leading role  in a high school production of "Will Tell" and in a college production of "Desert Song" (where  she met her husband). She wrote appropriate lyrics for a hymn that was sung by a  community choir at the City's Texas Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Hazel was in her mid-seventies when the San Marcos Daily Record gave her the opportunity  to publish the things that were buzzing around in her head in regular columns named  "Hazel." About half of those essays have been published in the book, A Wise Choice of Winds.

Photography became a hobby when she bought a camera to record the growth of her first  grandchild. There are many family pictures but she was equally interested in the beauties of  nature and nature's living creatures. The camera went with her into twenty-five countries  and on a number of drives through scenic areas in her own country. She chose to have the  images put on slides and at this point, the family is wondering what in heck they are going to  do with a collection of more than six thousand slides.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Gertrude and Earl Henthorn; her  brother Kenneth Henthorn and wife Mable; husband James Barton; daughter Niki Jo Boynt.  Surviving are daughter Janet Speer and husband Allen; son-in-law Walter A. Boynt, Jr.;  grandson Donovan Carroll; grandson Barton Carroll and wife Carrie; granddaughter Shawna  Currie; Granddaughter-by-choice Kathleen Kelso; great-grandsons Corbin Currie and  Joshua Boynt; great-granddaughters Octavia Currie and Kirsten Boynt.

Hazel requested that this sketch of her life would not be too long and that it would be  concluded with a quotation from Hunter Thompson:

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well-preserved  body, but rather to slide in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and proclaiming,  "Wow! What a ride!"

Family will receive friends at 10:00 A.M., and Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 A.M.,  Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in San Marcos, with the Rev. Mark  Newton officiating. Private interment.

Wrex Henthorn, Jr. was my cousin and the only one of the four that I ever met face-to-face.

Henthorn, E. [Ephraim] Delbert, 84, of RD 2, Wellsburg, WV died Friday, October 4, 2002, at home. He was born October 1, 1918 in Wood County, WV. He was a retired employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in the plant protection department, a member of the Wellsburg Church of Christ and a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Stacey Henthorn; two brothers, Kenneth Henthorn and Rector Henthorn; four sisters, Virginia Waggel, Grace Eddy, Helen Britt and Jessie Eddy.

Surviving are his wife, Rhea Grimm Henthorn; four sons, Delbert Henthorn and his wife, Laura, of Colliers, William Henthorn of Wellsburg, Leroy Henthorn and his wife Jeanette, of Wellsburg, and Gary Henthorn of Follansbee; a sister, Margaret Westover of Texas; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Morgan, T. (Thomas) Clifford

Thomas Clifford Morgan
(1919 - 2009)

Thomas Clifford Morgan (T. Clifford Morgan), 90, of Sedalia, MO, died Monday, September 21, 2009, at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center. He was born March 4, 1919, near Preston, MO, son of Thomas W. and Odessa Walker Morgan.

Clifford served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1936-38, and in the Navy during World War II from 1942-45. He married Elizabeth Jean Nelson at Trinity Methodist Church, in Kansas City, MO, on May 28, 1949. He lived near Parkville, MO, for 30 years. He retired in 1977 after 30 years with General Motors, Fairfax, Kansas City, Kansas.

He was a charter member of the Platte Woods United Methodist Church, Platte Woods, MO, but he joined the Warsaw United Methodist Church when he moved to Warsaw in 1979. He lived near Warsaw for 26 years. When he moved to Sedalia in 2005, he joined the Wesley United Methodist Church.

Clifford was past master of the Shawnee Masonic Lodge No. 653 in Warsaw. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 236 AF & AM in Sedalia.

Among his many interests was his membership in both the West Central and the Missouri Archaeology Society. He was a past chairman of the Duran Creek Patrol. He was a charter member and past President of the Damsite Square Dance club, which he helped found. He was a member of UAW No. 31. He led woodworking and geology projects in 4-H. He loved woodworking, making antique furniture reproductions, collecting Indian artifacts, being a rock hound, gardening, and researching and writing about family history.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Jean Morgan, of the home; a son, Thomas Dee Morgan, and his wife, M.J. Morgan, of Manhattan, KS; a daughter, Kathryn Louise Marshall, and her husband, Alan D. Marshall, of Sedalia; a grandson, Daniel Christopher Marshall, of Columbia; a granddaughter, Lila Walsh, of Camas, WA; a granddaughter, Kristina McFarland, of Newark, OH; a granddaughter, Shelley McFarland, of Westfield, IN; a granddaughter, Adelle McFarland, of Hagerstown, Maryland; a sister, Evelyn Dillinger, of Jefferson City, MO; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Odessa Mae Lindstrom; and a brother, George Dee Morgan.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Heckart Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday. Inurnment will be at a later date in Fisher Cemetery near Preston.

Condolences may be offered at Heckart Funeral Home. Arrangements are in the care of Heckart Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of the donor's choice.

Yoho, Michael “Goob” A, 52 of Silver Hill, [WV] died Monday, June 15, 2009 in Marshall County.

Michael was born March 22, 1957 in New Martinsville, WV the son of Keith Yoho and the late Dora Cecil Yoho.

He was a graduate of Magnolia High School Class of 1975, loved to ride his four-wheeler through the countryside of Silver Hill, a friend to all and he attended the Silver Hill Church of Christ.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, John and Doretta Cecil; paternal grandparents, Truman and Eathel Yoho.

Surviving are his father, Keith Yoho; four brothers, Kevin Yoho and his wife, Tina of Silver Hill, WV, Darren Yoho and his wife, Neta of Littleton, WV, Scott Yoho and his wife, Kris of Silver Hill, WV, Jay Yoho and his wife, Brandy of Cameron, WV; sister, Deborah Yoho of New Martinsville, WV; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends received 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Jarvis Funeral Home, 1224 S Bridge St., New Martinsville, WV where services will be held 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 19, 2009.

Interment in Freedom Cemetery in Silver Hill, WV.

Conger, Janice R. (Rheingans)

Janice R. Conger

Janice R. Conger, 63, of Sheboygan, [WI] died on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 at Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Janice was born in West Bend on Aug. 8, 1939, to Leoneze (Tesch) Rheingans and the late Chester Rheingans.

She attended Dodge County Teacher's College and received a BA degree in education from Lakeland college.

Janice was a teacher in the Sheboygan Area School District and taught in several schools in the city.

On June 16, 1962 she married Eugene J. Conger at Friedens United Church of Christ, Jackson.

Janice was a member of the First Congregational Church-United Church of Christ in Sheboygan where she sang in the choir.

She was also well known as a local musician and a fine singer. She was a charter member of the Lakeshore Chorale, sang with the John Michael Kohler Choruses and was a soloist for many of the churches in the area.

Janice enjoyed doing needlepoint and knitting, reading and gardening, "raising the most beautiful roses ever." She also enjoyed sailing with her husband, Gene.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Scott (Melissa) Conger of Wauwatosa and Gregory Conger of Oshkosh; a daughter, Cara-Lyn (Eric) Edson of Sheboygan; two granddaughters, Lauren and Emily; her mother, Leoneze Rheingans of West Bend; a brother, Dennis (and his special friend, Rozeann Campbell) Rheingans of Waukesha; a sister-in-law, Lesley (Wesley) Hatch of Wauwatosa; a niece; many cousins; other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church-Church of Christ, with Rev. James H. Hollister, pastor, officiating.

A private family burial was held for Janice in Greenbush Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church, 310 Bluff Ave., on Saturday from noon until the time of services.

Due to construction, friends may travel on Geele Avenue to Fourth Street and going south on Fourth Street enter the church parking lot.

In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to the Janice R. Conger Memorial Music Scholarship Fund.

The staff of the Novak-Ramm-Ziegler Funeral Home, Sheboygan, is serving the family.

The family wishes to thank the many friends and church members who sent flowers, brought meals and extended kindness to them during Janice's illness. They also wish to thank Dr. Kevin Johnson and his staff and the staff at Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.

OBITUARY: Pedestrian 2d Killed in 2 Days

Oregon City, Oct. 11. -- Mrs. Flossie Henthorn, 65, of 1512 Harrison street, Oregon City, was fatally injured about 6 p.m. Monday [Oct. 10, 1955] when struck by a car as she attempted to cross 16th street in the 1400 block here.

She died about 30 minutes after arrival at Oregon City hospital.

Mrs. Henthorn's death was the second pedestrian fatality in Oregon City in two days and only the second traffic death here this year. ...

The driver of the car that struck Mrs. Henthorn, William B. Hopwood, 17, of 1610 Division street, Oregon City, was not held. He told Coroner Leslie Peake of Clackamas county he did not see the woman.

Witnesses said Mrs. Henthorn was waving an umbrella to someone in the window of a nearby house when she walked into the path of the car.

The body was taken to Hillside chapel here. Survivors include the victim's husband, Luther.

OBITUARY: Kenneth Conger
BUFFALO, Iowa -- Services for Kenneth Arthur Conger, 72, Buffalo, [IA], will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park, with military honors conducted by Davenport American Legion Post 26.

Visitation is 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

Mr. Conger died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Genesis Medical Center East Campus, Davenport.

He was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Adair, [IA], the son of John and Mary (Kerr) Conger. He married Betty J. Bernauer on Sept. 28, 1951, in Davenport.

Mr. Conger was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He had been employed at International Harvester in East Moline prior to his retirement.

He enjoyed playing bingo, cards and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Lawrence Edward Conger, 92, of Raleigh, N.C. died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Raleigh.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's St. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Sunday.

Born Aug. 23, 1908, in Tifton, [GA] Conger was a son of William A. Conger and Fannie Kendall Conger, both deceased.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mittie Griffin Conger, who died in 1997.

Conger was a retired barber and had resided in Raleigh for the past 25 years.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Diane Conger of Raliegh; four brothers, Hansel Conger, Thomas Conger, Jack Conger and L. "Bo" Conger all of Tifton; one sister, Mrs. Erby Tucker of Tifton; three grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

BIOGRAPHY:
Captain Hiram Yoho, Georgetown, farmer and stock-raiser, is a native of Vermilion county, Illinois. He was born the 24th of December, 1836, and has always made his home in the county.

He lived with his parents until 1861. He then enlisted in the 12th Ill. Inf., and was in service three months; he then enlisted in the 35th Ill. as a Private in Co. E, and was in service until the close of the war. He was made Second Sergeant, and in a few months chosen as First Lieutenant, and served as such about one year. He was then made Captain of Co. E, and was in the battles of
Pea Ridge, Nashville, and Corinth. He served mostly on detached duty, transporting prisoners, assisting in drafts in New York and Michigan, etc.

On the 15th of May, 1865 he married Miss Nancy A. Ritter. She was living on the present place. They had five children, four living, vis: Marquis R., Ophelia, Thaddeus and Allen B.

OBITUARY: Aged Georgetown Resident is Dead (Feb. 13, [1924]
Captain Hiram Yoho passed away at home Tuesday night. Funeral Thursday.
February 12 - Captain Hiram Yoho, 89, born and raised in this township, died at his home in Georgetown, [IL] Tuesday night at 3:30. He had been seriously ill for several weeks and for the past 3 or 4 years was an invalid.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10:00. There will be a ? prayer at the house and the regular funeral service will be at the McKendree Church. Burial will be held in the cemetery near by.

Mr. Yoho is survived by one son, T.H. Yoho who lives in McKendree Township, and one daughter, Mrs. Ophelia Moore of this place. One son, Corporal Alden Yoho died in the hospital in New York during the war with Spain. He was a member of Battery A and was taken ill in Porto (sic) Rico. Another son, a R.R. mail clerk, died almost 20 years ago. Mrs. Yoho has been dead several years.

The deceased was born in this Township, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Yoho, pioneer residents of the county. He was the oldest of thirteen children. One brother William Yoho resides here and two sisters, ? ?, and Mrs. John Cook are also residents of Georgetown. Three sisters reside in the West. Mr. Yoho was a Captain in the 36th Illinois Volunteers during the Civil war.

OBITUARY: Doc Henthorn Dies
Harold Roy Henthorn, known to family and friends as, "Doc," spent his childhood in the vicinity of Aurora, NE, receiving his education in the public schools. He attended the Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine and maintain a practice in Aurora, NE for many years.

From December 20, 1917 to January 5, 1919 he served in the United States Army. He served in the United States Navy from 1922 to 1926.

In 1927, with wife Lillian, he moved to Sioux City, Iowa where he served as a veterinarian until 1931 when they moved to Aurora, NE. He served the Aurora area until after World War II when he sold the practice. He then worked for several years as a federal meat inspector in a plant at Central City, NE before retirement.

Doc and his wife owned two irrigated farms in the Aurora area. At one time, one of the farms was operated as a dairy farm.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Aurora. He was a member of Aurora Lodge 68, AF&AM, the Tehama Temple of the Shrine in Hastings and the Lester S. Harter Post 42 of the American Legion.

Funeral services were held in the chapel of the Higby Mortuary. The Rev. Merwyn Davidson, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Aurora, officiating. Casketbearers were members of the Masonic Lodge: Arthur Grosshans, Reuben Johnson, Milton Madsen, Llye McConaughey, Gereon Nelson, and P.D. Wilfong, DVM.

Eli Henthorn, born on 12 Feb 1841 died on 13 Nov 1912 at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 1 day. He married Phoebe Pittman on 1 Apr 1867. They had 11 children, 4 sons and 7 daughters. He is survived by 2 sons and 4 daughters, also 2 brothers and 1 sister. The funeral was at Antioch.

Cooley, Leslie "Les"

Leslie “Les”Cooley, age 80, of Fishhook, Il. died Sunday evening (May 31, 2009) at his residence.

He was born January 29, 1929 in Fishhook, Il. son of the late Leone and Ella Whitaker Cooley.

He married Donna L. Nunn on June 19, 1954 in Chambersburg, Il. and she preceded him in death on July 30, 1992.

Surviving are daughters, Joan Glenn and husband Robert of Versailles, Il. and their children, Bethina, Jessica, Rebekah; Kathy Feenstra and husband Doug of Fishhook, Il. and their children, Levi, Jason, and Lora; Rose Mary Garrett and husband Merle of Chambersburg, Il. and children Anthony, Timothy, Tiffiny, and Andy; two sons, Lyle Cooley and wife Cindy of Chambersburg, Il. and their children, Elizabeth and Mari; and Jerry Cooley and wife Pam of Rushville, Il. and children, Benjamin, Lucas, Ariane, and Celeste; five great-grandchildren, Korbyn, Liam, Alexandra, Logan, and Emily; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one grandson, Eric Michael Feenstra; one sister, Leola Smith; and three brothers, Elza Cooley, Melvin Cooley, and Herbert Cooley.

Mr. Cooley farmed all his life in Fishhook area. Les loved playing in the creek and having “wiener –roasts”. He also loved listening to country music and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Woodland Church and a trustee for Woodland Cemetery Association. He was also a Fairmount township board trustee, and one of the original trustees for the North Pike Fire Protection District. Les also worked for the Fairmount Road Commissioner for several years.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday (June 4, 2009) at Woodland Church in Fishhook, Il. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville, Il. Henthorn, Gary Everett

Woodsfield [OH] - Gary Everett Henthorn, 27, of Sardis Route 1 apparently drowned Saturday afternoon while setting muskrat traps in a creek near Antioch, according to Monroe County Coroner Dr. J. W. Blevins.

Dr. Blevins said Henthorn apparently slipped and fell in waist-deep water, his hip-boots apparently filled with water and he was unable to reach dry land.

He was born Nov. 15, 1946 in Sardis, the son of Mrs. Estel Bonam Henthorn of Sardis Route 1 and the late Everett Henthorn.

Survivors include his mother, his widow, Beverly Smith Henthorn; a daughter, Kimberly, and a son, Mark, both of the home, a sister, Mrs. Darla Beckett of Heath; a brother, K. Henthorn of Sardis Route 1, and a grandmother, Mrs. Jane Stine of Columbus.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at Bauer and Turner Funeral Home here where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in West Union Cemetery near Sardis.

SPENCER YOHO, 99, of 1209 Third St., Moundsville, WV, died Thursday in Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glendale, WV. He was a brick layer by trade. Surviving are his wife, Melissa Alice Short Yoho; three sons, James of Weston, Manford of New Martinsville and John Yoho of Moundsville; a daughter, Myrtle Payne of Moundsville; a sister Mary Lemasters of Clarksburg; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Friends received at the Grisell Funeral Home of Moundsville.

Obituary: Susie Mae Hinthorn, 67, of Mission, Texas, formerly of Peoria, died Tuesday, March 9, 1993, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.

She was born in Denver and married William Hinthorn. He survives.

Also surviving are her mother, Mary Frisbie of Denver; one son, William of Overland Park, Kan.; four daughters, Dianne Durham and Joanne Wikoff, both of Peoria, Janet Brown of Washington and Carol Mohney of Knoxville, Tenn.; several brothers and sisters; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria at a later date. Arrangements are by Virgil Wilson & Sons Mortuary in Mission.
