Burl Rex Tennant, 66, of Mason, W. Va., died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 1989, in Huntington [Cabell Co.] “WV” Hospital.

He was born May 3, 1923, in Brave [Greene Co., PA], a son of Lucy Stiles Tennant of Brave and the late Melford “Poon” Tennant.

He was a retired employee of the Kaiser Aluminum Co. in Ravenswood, WV, and earlier work for the DuPont Corp. in Morgantown, WV.

He was a veteran of World War ll. He was a member of the United Brethren Church in Mason and the American Legion.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Bessie Dylon Tennant; of Newport Richie, Fla., Rodney Tennant of Tampa, Fla., and Keith Tennant at home; three daughters, Sandy White of Morgantown, Candy Ann Gunn of Parkersburg, W. Va., and Taresia [sic, Teresa] Tennant at home; seven grandchildren; a brother, the Rev. Chester Tennant of Gent, W. Va.; and a sister, Gayle Haught of Bula, W. Va.

Louise Bowers Tharp, 46, of Graysville, died at 7:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 1969, in Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, WV.  She had been seriously ill for the last seven weeks.

She was born Sept. 15, 1922, in Richhill Twp, [Greene Co., PA], the daughter of Ralph and Grace Parson Bowers.

She was married May 13, 1943 [appears to be 1943] to Woodrow Dick Tharp, who survives.

Mrs. Tharp was employed with the Michael Berkowitz Company, and had resided at Graysville for the last 15 years, and was a member of Local 622 of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Harold and Dennis, both at home; one granddaughter; and the following brothers and sisters; Wilma, wife of Doyle Keirn, of Kittaning, [PA]; Anna Bowers, of Graysville, R.D. 1, [PA]; Freda Tennant, of Brownsville, [PA]; Irma, wife of Ralph Kilgore, of West Finley, R.D., [PA]; Georgia, wife of Earl Lewis, of Rutan, [PA]; Virginia, wife of Kenneth Thomas, of Graysville, [PA]; Edward Bowers, of McDonald, [PA]; Harold Bowers, of Graysville, [PA]; and John Bowers, of Pittsburgh, [PA].

Funeral services were held Monday with burial in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Ida L. Dulaney, 79, wife of Walter Dulaney and a lifelong resident of the Shannon Run section of Perry Township, [Greene Co., PA] died at her home Sunday morning, Jan. 12, 1947, at 4 o'clock after a brief illness.

A daughter of W. G. and Mary Lemley Headlee, she was born November 5, 1868, in Perry Township [Greene Co., PA], and was a member of the Shannon Run Methodist Church.

She married Walter [V.] Dulaney [7 Feb 1889, Greene Co., PA], well known Perry Township farmer and stockman, who survives with two daughters and three sons: Miss Mary M. Dulaney and Mrs. Martha D. Gutberlet, at home; F. Ray Dulaney, of Belleville, Pa.; David H. Dulaney, of Muskogee, Okla., and Forney L. Dulaney, of Spraggs, R.D. There are eight grandchildren. Four brothers also survive, namely: Oscar A. Headlee, of Spraggs; Jasper N. Headlee, of Toledo, O.; Benson S. Headlee, of Pataskala, O., and William W. Headlee, of Waynesburg.

DULANEY - Friends of Mrs. Ida L. Dulaney, wife of Walter Dulaney, of Perry Township, who died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1947, will be received at the George I. Church Funeral Parlor, South Washington street, until noon Tuesday, Jan. 14. Private funeral services will be conducted at the Church Funeral Parlor Tuesday afternoon with Rev. H. Ernest McNeely in charge. Burial will be in the Claughton Cemetery [Whiteley Twp., Greene Co., PA]. Please omit flowers.

OBITUARY:
Funeral services for Henry Headley will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Briscoe Run Baptist church, of which he was a member. Burial will be made in the Harkins cemetery [Vienna, Wood Co., WV].

Mr. Headley, an old and respected resident of this community, [Parkersburg, WV] died yesterday morning about 9 o'clock [21 Aug 1926], at the family residence, Saunders Avenue, North Parkersburg. Although he was born in Green [sic] county, Pennsylvania [25 Apr 1842], he moved to this city when nine years of age.

He was a Union veteran having fought in Company G Tenth Regiment, West Virginian Infantry.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret [Ann Howard] Headley, and two sons, Charles and Samuel Headley, and a large number of grandchildren and great grand-children. Two b [illegible, brothers?] and sisters survive, who are Thomas, of California; and Samuel Headley, of this city; Mrs. Richard Starr and Mrs. Danford Nelson, both of Parkersburg.

Mr. Elijah Headley died at his home in Perry township, this county [Greene Co., PA], Saturday May 23, 1885; aged about 65 years.

Mr. Headley was a man always highly respected, whom everybody liked, and by his death, his many friends and acquaintance will meet with a severe loss. But few lives would compare with his for uprightness and honor. He had been a consistent member of the M. E. church for many years and died a faithful Christian. His death removes the last of a family of several boys all of whom lived to be useful and successful men. The sorrowing friends have the sympathy of the community.

She was born May 26 1889, in Marshall county, WV, as a member of a prominent pioneer family, the daughter of the late Iven Flemming and Eliza Jane Harbison.

She was a former resident of Moundsville, Monessen and Scottsdale, Penna., and spent the last six years in Beaver, Penn.

She was a member of the Church of Woodland, Woodland, WV.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. James A. (Marcella) Oelashlager, with whom she made her home; two sons, Iven Garner Yoho of Hyattsville, Md., and Wilson A. Yoho of Stuarts Draft, Virginia; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

One daughter, Mrs. Martha Memefee, preceded her in death in 1968.

Friends will be received at the Wilson Funeral Home, 789 Second street, Beaver, Penna., on Saturday from 12:00 noon to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where services will be conducted Monday morning at 11:00 a.m.

Internment will be in Calvary Methodist cemetery, Graysville, WV on Monday afternoon, with Rev. Arnold Husk in charge of Committal services.

OBITUARY:
The body [Eliza A. Goddard] arrived in McCook [NE] on No. 1, yesterday afternoon [20 Aug 1913] and funeral services were held by Rev. D.L. McBride in Longview cemetery at three o'clock. The husband of the departed was buried in this cemetery years ago. On Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 21 [1913], the remains of Mrs. Eliza Goddard were buried in Longview cemetery with a brief burial service conducted by D.L. McBride.

Mrs. Goddard was the widow of the late Hon. Samuel Goddard, who represented Frontier and Gosper counties in the lower house of the legislature in the session of 1890-91. They homesteaded near Centerpoint in Frontier county in 1884, and were held in high esteem by all who knew them.

Mr. Goddard died in 1901, [20 Jun 1901] since which time Mrs. Goddard has resided at Arcadia and Lincoln, Neb., dying in the latter city, aged 78 years, 5 mos, and 6 days.

Mr. and Mrs. Goddard were married in 1852 [sic, 15 Sep 1851] and there were born to them six sons all of whom are still living: Squire W. of Brush Colo., Sanford T. and D.M. of Lincoln, Neb., C.C. of Paris, Tex., C.B. of Sterling, Colo. and McLean of Tibbetts, Neb.

OBITUARY: GEORGE B. ECKELBERRY -
died at the residence of his son, Richard...near Sheldon post office [Montana] Jan. 31st, 1893.

George B. Eckelberry was born on Sept. 25, 1804 in Green[e] County, Penn. and was married to Miss Sarah Wise of the same place. Soon after their marriage they moved to West Virginia where they resided several years and from there they moved to Minnesota and from there to this valley to live with his son Richard.

Mr. Eckelberry has been a member of the christian church for 45 years. His wife died twelve years ago in West Virginia. Mr. Eckelberry was the father of eight children: three girls and five boys. Two girls and two boys are now living. He had three sons in the late war.

He was only sick four days and said just before his death that he was ready and wanted to die. He has always been a healthy, strong, and vigorous man, in body and mind.

Funeral services were held at the residence of Richard Eckelberry on Friday February 3rd, by Rev. J. M. Eastland. The remains were entered in the Shaw cemetery on the east side
[Inter Lake; 10 Feb 1893; p. 3, c3; submitted by L. Harrington who notes that George was likely not born in 1804 since his father is listed as a single man in 1810 tax lists. Also, George's headstone is in Fairview Cemetery, not Shaw Cemetery; most graves were moved in the 1890's.]

OBITUARY: Walter Dulaney Dies At 103; Was Oldest Resident
Walter V. Dulaney, 103, Greene County's oldest resident, died at 4:15 p.m. Monday in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Gutberlet, of 1162 Sixth Street, Waynesburg [Greene Co., PA], where he had resided for several years.

Until he became ill three weeks ago he had enjoyed the good health which permitted him to enjoy regular walks and even - on his 103rd birthday last July 30 - attempt a brief horseback ride.

His zest for life was matched only by his fondness for quoting the Bible and by his belief in the value of knowledge.
"A man's born to learn. I learn something new most every day," he told a reporter on his 102nd birthday.

He firmly believed that adherence to Biblical laws was fundamental to a good life.
"It's a wonderful thing to know Christ," he frequently pointed out.

Mr. Dulaney, who could read without glasses, attributed his long life to hard work, abstinence form liquor and tobacco, and regular eating habits. He was interested in those around him and was a frequent visitor at the nearby Greene County Memorial hospital, where he had many friends among the employees.

He was a son of Thomas [Calvert] and Lucretia Fox Dulaney and was born July 30, 1860 on Shannon Run, in Perry Township [Mount Morris, Greene Co., PA]. Until his retirement, he was a farmer, stock raiser and stock dealer.

His father and mother both died in 1879, leaving seven children, of whom he was one of the oldest.

"We older children had to turn out and support the younger ones," he frequently pointed out. All his brothers and sisters are now dead.

His wife, who died in 1947, was Ida L. Headley [Ida Leah Headlee who he married on 7 Feb 1889 in Green Co., PA] of Perry Township.

He was a lifelong member of the Shannon Run Methodist Church, but became affiliated with the Waynesburg Church of the Nazarene when he moved to Waynesburg in 1955.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Dulaney and Mrs. Martha Gutberlet, of Waynesburg; four sons, F. Ray of Edensboro, [line missing] David H., of Hemet, Calif., and Forney L., of Spraggs; eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

One son is deceased.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Mariner and Milliken Funeral Home at Waynesburg with Rev. W. H. Miller, Rev. John Duvall and Rev. Elmer McCormick officiating. Burial will follow in the Claughton [Chapel] Cemetery [Whiteley Twp., Greene Co., PA].

Franklin Dulaney, 84, Mt. Morris R. D. 1, [Mount Morris, Greene Co., PA] died at his home [Greene Co., PA] Friday, March 16, 1951, at 3:30 p.m. following a brief illness. Mr. Dulaney was a well known farmer and stock raiser in Greene County.

He was born in Greene County on October 25, 1866, a son of the late Thomas and Lucretia Fox Dulaney. He had married Victoria Cleavenger. She died in 1945.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Emma) Headlee of Waynesburg and Miss Anna Dulaney, at home; a son, Charles L. of Mt. Morris; two step-daughters, Mrs. Clara Stammler of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Ernest (Ica) Fordyce of Waynesburg; 11 grandchildren, eight grand-children, a sister, Mrs. Addie Lemley of Waynesburg, and two brothers, Walter of Mt. Morris, R. D., and E. L. of Waynesburg.

The 1880 census (living with son, Jacob Yoho) lists her birth place as PA and that of her parents as Ireland.  The census records of other of her offspring also list her as born in PA.

OBITUARY: Mrs. Nancy Yoho, one of Wayne township's [Lawrence Co., PA] oldest inhabitants, died on Friday last [5 Apr 1889 at Chewton, Lawrence Co., PA].

She was the mother of 'Squire Yoho, of Newport, and had reached that good old age of 89 years [born 26 Feb 1800 in Pennsylvania].

She had been a good Christian and a kind mother of a large family.  She had not walked with out the aid of crutches for the past 24 years.

Mr. Donley, 55, of 700 10th St., Oakmont, had a 25-year career with PPG Indsutries. He had been awarded 11 U.S. patents and numerous foreign patents for his work on solar-efficient coatings for architectural glass.

He was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College, where he majored in chemistry. Mr. Donley was listed in Who's Who Among Scientists in the East and was a member of the American Chemical Society, Electro-Chemical Society and the American Association of Chemists.

Surviving are his wife, Janice G. [Janice Yvonne Garlock] Donley; a son, Dr. H. Edward Jr. of Harrisonburg, Va; and two daughters, Susan Kay Donley at home and Cathy D. Chavez of Sharpsburg.

Services and burial, arranged by Thomas D. English Funeral Home in Oakmont, will be private. Friends will be received from 7 to o 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Donley family home in Oakmont.

Arlene M. Henthorn

Arlene M. Henthorn, 97, formerly of Palmer Township, passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2009 in Country Meadows, Bethlehem Township. Born: July 25, 1911 in Easton, [PA] she was a daughter of the late Walter E. and Lila Houck Seibel.

Her husband, Elwood R., died July 1, 1992.

Arlene enjoyed crocheting, cooking, bowling and playing cards.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Easton and a former member of the Easton Exchangettes.

Survivors: Two cousins, Edwin C. and Alvin W. Houck, both of Easton; a brother-in-law, Karl Henthorn and his wife Barbara, of Hughesville, PA; a dear friend, Helena Perazzetti; nieces and nephews. A brother, Harold Seibel, died earlier.

Services: Will be held at 11am Friday in the Strunk Funeral Home, Inc., 2101 Northampton St., Wilson Borough. Call Friday 10-11am in the funeral home. Burial will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine.

I David Jennings of Menallin Township, Fayette County, Pa. being weak and infirm in body but sound of mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of the body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die and I do here by make and ordain this to be my last will and testament and here by this do revoke all others here to fore made or published. My body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian like manner and as touching such worldly estate as I may die possessed of I give and dispose of in the following way, to wit, I will unto my son Enoch one certain piece or parcel of land lying and being in Morgan County in the State or Ohio on which he now lives adjoining the lands of E. Tolbridge on the north and John Rusk on east and others, containing about eighty acres.

Item, I will and bequeath unto my son John the sum of two hundred dollars to be paid to him by my executors on or before the first of January, eighteen hundred and fifty two.

Item, I will and bequeath unto my son David's children that piece or parcel of land that I purchased of Jese Plummer, laying in Allen Co, State of Ohio near the forks of Hogg Creek adjoining the land of John Claybough on the east and Staly on the south.

Item, I will and bequeath unto my son Benjamin that piece or parcel of land I purchased of Barnet Wyer lying in Allen Co., State of Ohio being the north half of the south fourth of section twenty five in Township nine, south of range eight. I will and bequeath unto my son Jared that piece or parcel of land I purchased of the United States laying in Allen Co., State of Ohio, section two, Township three, range eight the south half of the northwest quarter being on the waters of Sugar Cr.

Item, I will and bequeath unto my son Elijah the south part of my farm according to a survey made by Joseph Boyd, subject to the following reservations that is to say that my son Henry is to have the prevealedge of as much stove cole out of the bank now opened or anyone that may be opened as will serve for house use. Also a piece of ground of the following dimention including the graveyard that is to say commencing at a walnut in the south east corner and running six perches due west and running six perches due north and running six perches due east and running six perches due south to the place of the beginning.

Also my son Elijah is subject to the payment of one hundred dollars to my son John in the time specified in this my will and bequeath unto my son Henry the north part of my farm according to a survey made by J. Boyd.

I also will to my son Henry all my moveable property. My son Henry also subject to the payment of one hundred dollars to my son John as is prescribed in this my will.

And last I do nominate constitute and appoint my sons Elijah and Henry both of the Twp. of Menallen and County of Fayette to be my sole executors of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I here unto set my hand and seal this second day of January 1851,

In the name of God Amen. I David Jennings of the township of Menallen in the County of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania being in weakness of body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding, thanks be given to God Therefor, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say after the payment of all my just debts and the charges of my funeral which is to be directed and conducted at the discretion of my Executors here after mentioned, I devise and bequeath as followeth.

Item I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Katherine Jennings the one third of all my personal estate and the one third of all my rents and profits of my real estate to be paid to her annually during her life. Likewise all the household and kitchen furniture that she brought with her when we were married.

Item I devise and bequeath unto my son Benjamin Jennings one hundred and fifty seven acres of land and the allowance as followeth. Beginning at two white oaks on the line of Jasper Yarnall thence south thirteen degrees west nineteen perches and six tenths to a post thence sixty three degrees east sixteen perches and two tenths to a jack oak thence south forty degrees west seventy perches and three tenths to a jack oak thence north eighty degrees and one quarter west one hundred and seven perches and eight links to a Spanish oak in the line of John Brown. Thence by the land of Hugh Lovesing North twenty nine degree west two hundred and fifty perches to a hickory in the line of Robert Boyds land thence north twenty three and one half degrees east thirty eight perches and seven links to a corner of a piece of land that I gave to my son David Jennings thence by the James south fifty five degrees east one hundred and twenty four perches and ten links to a post thence north forty degrees and - east sixteen perches to a post thence south fifty five degrees and one quarter east one hundred and twenty six perches.

I further bequeath unto my son Benjamin Jennings all my sawmills plantations where on Joshua Down now lives with the appurtenances thereto belonging containing the dam with the privilege of raising, for the benefit of sawing, six inches higher than what it is now.

Item I give and bequeath unto my son David Jennings one hundred and fifty seven acres of land and the allowance, Beginning at stones in the line of Robert Boyd and a corner of land I have bequeathed to my son Benjamin thence north - seventy three degrees east one hundred and eighty nine perches and seven tenth to stones in the line of my sawmill place thence by the James south sixty seven degrees east one hundred and eight perches to a white oak in the line of James Ebert and thence by the James and Joshua Woodwards land south twenty six degrees west one hundred and twenty perches and five tenths to a Jack oak and thence south eighty five degrees west eight perches to a post thence south for thirteen degrees west thirty nine perches and four links to a post and two white oaks a corner of the land that I gave my son Benjamin thence by a division line through my farm agreeably to a late survey to the place of the beginning.

I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Cooper the sum of one hundred dollars. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Frances Brooks the sum of fifty dollars. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mehetable Cooper the sum of fifty dollars. I give and bequeath unto my grandson Henry Jennings, son of my son, Jonathan Jennings the sum of fifty dollars. To my daughter Mary McCracken and Rebecca Woodson I make no bequest in consequence of what I have given them heretofore.

The above legacies to be paid at the end of one year after my decease. My will further is that if my final estate shall amount to more than will pay the above legacies that the overplus be equally divided between the above named legatees. And lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my two sons Benjamin and David Jennings executors of this my last will and testament. Revoking and annulling all wills heretofore made testifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have here unto set my hand and affixed my seal this seventh day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nineteen.

Footnote:

All of David's children are mentioned in his will with the exception of his daughter Margaret,

David died on March 29, 1824 and his will was brought for probate, in April of 1824.

David also mentions his grandson, who was the son of his son Jonathan. Jonathan, according to the best available records died around 1814.

Note should be made of the fact that David mentions "thence by the James (River) and Joshua Woodwards land". Elizabeth Woodward, a daughter of Joshua Woodward, in 1828, marries Enoch Jennings, David's grandson.

We do know that Mary (Henthorn), David's first wife died in April of 1815; no record has ever been found to indicate who "my beloved wife Katherine Jennings", might have been before her marriage to David. Indications are however that she could have been a widow as he mentions-that she is to have "all the household and kitchen furniture that she brought with her when we were married"...)

Conger, Benjamin Cortis

BENJAMIN C. CONGER

Benjamin Cortis Conger was born at Wilkesville, PA. March 17, 1839. He passed away at his home in this city at 4am December 25, 1928. His age was eighty-eight years, ten months and twenty-three days. He was a son of Calvin Conger and Aranda Horton Conger.

While a small boy, he moved with the family to Wyanet, IL., where he grew to manhood. He was married, at Marshalltown, IA., to Miss Altana Hand in 1861. They resided at Wyanet for a few years, then moved to Marshalltown. Some years later, they moved to Jefferson county, Nebraska, where they remained for forty-two years. Most of that time they lived on a farm. The last ten years of that period were spent in Harbine. Ten years ago, they moved to Beatrice and this city has been their home continuously since that time.

He served as a soldier in the Union army during the Civil war, enlisting in 1863 at Wyanet. He had the unusual experience of serving as a guard over the body of Abraham Lincoln when it lay in state at Springfield. He also accompanied the body to its last resting place.

He leaves his aged wife, Mrs. Altana Conger; four children, Mrs. Sarah Sisler of Fairbury, Mrs. Emma Oakes of Beatrice, Mrs. T. C. Rand of Beatrice, and Elmer Conger of Edgar, Nebraska; four brothers and sisters, Mrs. Susan and Will Conger of Princeton, IL., Washington Conger of Marshalltown, IA., and Mrs. Mattie Sharp of Waterloo, IA.; nine grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Mr. Conger was a life long member of the United Brethren church. He was a good Christian man. He was a kind and loving husband and father, always thoughtful of the welfare of his wife and children. He was especially patient during his long period of illness.
Mr. Conger was a hard working man. He shared the experiences that were common among the pioneers a half century ago. Many friends living in the communities where he was best known, join sympathetically in the sorrow caused by his death. His last illness covered a period of about seven weeks.

The funeral service was held at the home, Thursday afternoon, December 27. Rev. C. O. Stuckenbruck had charge of the service. He was assisted by Rev. C. W. Olewine. Music was furnished by Mrs. H. Baker and Mrs. M. S. Calvin. Interment was in Evergreen Home cemetery.

"A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
That never can be filled."
