Conger, Elizabeth Jane nee Barrackman

Spirit of Democracy, Woodsfield, Ohio, dated, March 13, 1929

On February 25, 1929 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jay Huffman at Paden City, W.Va., occurred the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Conger. Born Dec. 26, 1845 near Benwood, Ohio, she was at the time of her death, 83 years, 1 month and 25 days. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Jane Barrackman, and on Sept. 23, 1869, she was united in marriage to John M. Conger, to which union four children were born. They are: Mrs. Bert Agin of Zanesville; Mrs. Jay Huffman of Paden City; Daniel W., who died in infancy; and Margaret C., who died at the age of 13 years.

There are also four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Jackson of Barnesville, Ohio, besides many other relatives and friends, who mourn for one who was so good and kind and loving in all her ways of life.

Mrs. Conger became a member of the M.E. Church at Fletcher’s Chapel, near Laings, Ohio, at the age of twenty years, and throughout the years, she lived an exemplary Christian life, exercising a firm faith in her Saviour and his teaching. She died in the conviction that there is a crown of unfading glory laid up for those who love and obey their Lord.

On Tuesday, February 26, the body was laid to rest in the beautiful North View Cemetery at New Martinsville, there to await the resurrection following funeral services held in the Northern Methodist Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Odell.

Lillian C. Conger age 82 of Ovid, Michigan died Saturday, November 15, 2003 at the Ovid Healthcare Center, Ovid, Michigan. She was a homemaker.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, Michigan. Rev. Fr. George Michalek will officiate with burial at North Star Cemetery in North Star, Michigan. Visitation will be Monday from 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday 9 A.M.-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.

Lillian was born on May 3, 1921 in Gratiot County, Michigan the daughter of Gerald & Edith (Harrington ) Powelson. She was married to Glenn Conger in Owosso, Michigan. She had resided most of her life in Owosso & Ovid. She enjoyed cooking, canning, quilting & doll making. She was an expert seamstress.

Survivors include her husband; Glenn Conger of Ovid, Michigan, 1 daughter; Hazel & Dick Grinnell of Ovid, Michigan, 3 sons; Roger & Bobbie Ackels of Houston, Texas, Rodrick Ackels of Owosso, Michigan & Roneil & Jorja Ackels of Owosso, Michigan; 19 Grandchildren, 35 Great Grandchildren & 11 Great Great Grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 brothers; Bill & Martha Powelson of Ashley, Michigan & George Powelson also of Ashley, Michigan; 1 Daughter in law, Betty Ackels of Ovid, Michigan & 1 Brother in law, Ivan & Dorothy Conger of Owosso, Michigan.

She was predeceased by her parents, son Richard, 1 great granddaughter, 1 sister Lula, & 3 brothers Gerald, Norman, & Orlin.

Memorials may be made to the Ovid Ambulance Service or to the Ovid Healthcare Center. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Yoho, Belle (Gardner)

Mrs. Belle Yoho, aged 70, widow of John Yoho, passed away at 9:30 o'clock Friday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Stewart, 317 South Eleventh Street, after an illness lasting two months.

She was born in Washington, Pa., the daughter of John and Mary Ellen Katy Gardner, and came to Cambridge when a child with her parents, residing here ever since. Mrs. Yoho had a large number of friends and was highly respected. She was a member of the First Christian Church for many years and when her health permitted was active in its affairs.

She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter, Mrs. Stewart with whom she lived lived; one brother, Frank Gardner of North Eighth street, and one sister, Mrs. George Haines of Zanesville. Her husband died three years ago.

Yoho, John Otto

John Otto Yoho, eldest son of the late Peter F. and Martha S. Yoho, was born November 9, 1869, at Fontana, Kansas, being the first white child born in Miami County, that state, and departed this life at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Johanning at Wheeling, W. Va., where he had been visiting, Saturday evening, September 26, 1931, following an illness from heart affection.

He came with his parents, upon their return to Ohio, to Lewisville, Monroe County, later resided with them at East Union and in the early 80's came with the family to Caldwell, where the greater part of his life was spent. He acquired a common school education and later was associated with his father in business at Caldwell. In later years he entered the employ of the Neil & Ellingham Wholesale Grocery Company at Wheeling. In still later years he associated himself with the Dill Medicine Company, of Norristown, Pa., with headquarters at Pittsburgh, Pa., with which company he remained until he came to Caldwell some years ago, and purchased the merchandise stock owned by the late J. Stanton Harris. This business he continued here until he removed the stock of goods to Dexter City, where he continued the business until failing health more than two years ago prevented his further engagement in active business.

On September 7, 1892, he was untied in marriage at Cambridge, Ohio, to Belle Gardner Matthews, of that city, and resided at that place until their removal to Pittsburgh. To this union no children were born. The deceased is survived by his wife and one step-daughter, Mrs. Daisy Stewart, both of Cambridge, and four sisters, Mrs. Lillian Harris, of Caldwell and Mrs. George E. Harsch, Mrs. O.G. Mills and Mrs. Pearl Coburn all of Zanesville.

The deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew him and had the highest respect of all his acquaintances. He was honest and upright, true to his convictions, generous and [had] sympathy for all in need and distress, and his passing is deeply mourned by his legions of friends.

The body was brought to the home of his sister, Mrs. Harris, at Caldwell, where funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon by Rev. D. C. Marshall, of Flushing, Ohio, former pastor of the Caldwell Presbyterian Church, a close and affectionate friend of the deceased, following which the body was placed in the Yoho vault in the Olive Cemetery. Henthorn, Ray A.

Ray A. Henthorn, 79, 3641 Central Ave., Shadyside, [OH], died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999 at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling, [WV]. He was born Nov. 30, 1919 in Cameron, [OH], a son of the late John and Alice (Boughner) Henthorn.

He was a retired employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., Yorkville Plant, attended Lincoln Avenue United Methodist Church, Shadyside, a member of Beallsville Masonic Lodge and an Army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceeded in death by three sisters, Wanda Lee Henthorn, Sarah Atkinson and Ada Mae Root.

Surviving are his wife, Marjorie Conner Henthorn, a son John of Shadyside, two daughters, Ellen Brooks of Washington Court House and Linda Messimer of Salem; a brother Paul Henthorn of Woodsfield, five grandchildren; a great grandchild.

Friends will be received at the Bauknecht Funeral Home, Shadyside, today 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. where services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Kurt Landerholm officiating. Burial follows in Powhatan Cemetery, Powhatton Point.

LEXINGTON -- Verda V. Gerwick, 83, of Lexington, [IL] died at 8:50 p.m. Saturday (July 19, 2003) at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in El Paso, [IL]. Her graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Hinthorn Cemetery, Lake Bloomington, the Rev. Steve Estes officiating. Her visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Musselman-Beck Funeral Home in Lexington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lexington Geneological and Historical Society.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1919, at Normal, to Earl and Velettie Venetta Vangraft Hinthorn. She married Welby "Web" Gerwick on Aug. 6, 1948, at Weldon, Ark. He died Jan. 10, 1998. She was previously married to Hyle Stamm. He also preceded her in death along with her parents and two granddaughters.

Survivors include: a daughter, Sandra K. (Robert) Moore of Lexington; a son, Chuck (Debra) E. Gerwick of Bloomington; a sister, Norma Sutton of Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Tim (Melinda) Moore of Palos Heights; David Moore of Lexington; and Jonathan and Elizabeth Gerwick both of Bloomington; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Welby Moore both of Palos Heights.

She was seamstress for many years of her life.

She founded the Lexington Genealogy and Historical Society in 1963. She was nominated for Women of the Year with Who's Who of American Women in 1992.

Henthorn, Jesse Willard

Jesse Willard Henthorn, 77, Norman, [OK], died Monday, February 1, [1993] at his home in Norman. He was born December 13, 1915 to Jasper K. and Cora Henthorn at Oklahoma City. Mr. Henthorn grew up in the Oklahoma City area and graduated from Putnam City High School in 1933. He married Mildred Irene Bryant in 1946. Mr. Henthorn came to Norman from Edmond in 1988. He was a retired heavy equipment mechanic.

Mr. Henthorn is survived by his wife, Mildred Irene Henthorn; two sons, Barry Henthorn of Oklahoma City, Tom Henthorn of Norman; two daughters, Norma Jo Billings of San Antonio, Texas, Rita Eliasen of McKinney, Texas; a sister, Dorothy Carpenter of Fort Valley, Georgia; three brothers, Elerick, William J. (Jack) and George all of Oklahoma City; and three grandchildren. Mr. Henthorn was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
