OBITUARY: RINE, CLARENCE ARTHUR, 77, of 17 Simpson Ave. Moundsville, died Thursday [16 Dec 1976 at Glen Dale, Marshall Co., WV] in Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale. He was a retired employee of Fostoria Glass Co. and a member of the Church of Christ, Moundsville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Flossie Jones Rine.

Surviving are three sons, Keith and Marlo, both of Moundsville and Dale of Canton; a brother, Otis of Bowman Ridge, Moundsville; two sisters, Mrs. Clem (Grace) Young of Fork Ridge, Moundsville and Mrs. Lula Truex of Moundsville; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Friends received at the Grisell Funeral Home, Moundsville, 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Saturday, where services will be held Sunday at 1:30 pm. Interment in Salem Cemetery, Bowman Ridge, Marshall county.

MILITARY: Company M, First West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, Spanish-American War; mustered out at Camp Conrad, Georgia on February 4, 1899.

BIOGRAPHY: Foster Rine spent his youth on the farm, attended Marshall County Schools and West Liberty State Normal School; was knowledgeable and progressive in his thinking and widely known, having taught in Marshall County Schools for forty years (rural and city) - thirty-four as elementary teacher, and six as principal.  He was a staunch Republican: served four years on the Republican Executive Committee; elected to West Virginia House of Delegates, 1924-25; served on the Agriculture Education, Prohibition, Temperance, and Military Affairs Committees, and was Chairman of the Committee on Federal Relations.

OCCUPATION: Teacher in Marshall Co., WV; guard at the state penitentiary for a number of years; during World War I, he guarded at Beech Bottom Power Plant and the Benwood railroad bridge. During vacations and later, after retirement from teaching, he was employed as a guard at the West Virginia Penitentiary.

PUBLIC_SERVICE: Represented Marshall Co., WV in the 1925 and 1926 WV Legislature.

OBITUARY: Foster L. Rine, Educator and Legislator, Dies Here; Two-Year Illness Fatal to Popular Citizen; Was War Veteran
Foster Lincoln Rine, 64, died Thursday night [20 Sep 1934 at Moundsville, Marshall Co., WV] at six o'clock at his home on Short Center street.  He had been ill for two years.

Mr. Rine was born [14 Aug 1870 at Rosbys Rock, Marshall Co., WV] and spent his entire life in Marshall county.  He was instructor in Marshall county schools for forty years, and was a Spanish - American war veteran, being a member of Company M, First W.Va. Volunteers.

Mr. Rine represented Marshall county in the legislature in 1925 and 1926, being elected on the Republican ticket.  He also served a number of years as a guard at the state penitentiary.

He was a member of Calvary M.E. church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Katherine Schultz Rine and the following eleven sons and daughters: John Rine, deputy U.S. clerk of Elkins; Mrs. Dorothy Brown, wife of Rev. Durward B. Brown of Gassaway, W.Va.; Lowell, Foster, Jr., Edison, Paul and Reed at home, and Misses Olive, Beulah, Lillian and Marjorie Rine, also at home; one brother, Theodore Rine, of Long Beach, a Washington, D.C. suburb
[Note: The phrase, "a Washington, D.C. suburb," is probably an error. Theodore Rine lived at Long Beach in the state of Washington.  REH];
and four sisters, Mrs. Nancy Schaffer of California; Mrs. Sarah Richmond, Glen Easton; Mrs. Phoebe Cox, Moundsville and Mrs. Alice Marshall, Wheeling.

The body was removed to the Lutes funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at the home at 1208 Center Street, Sunday afternoon at three o'clock.  Rev. S.C. Dotson of Calvary M.E. church will be in charge.

OBITUARY:
Mrs. Wm. F. Haney, age 88, wife of William F. Haney, died at her home, 201 S. Paul Street, [Woodsfield, OH] Sunday morning [Nov 1952] at five o'clock, following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Haney was born in Wayne Township, [1864] one of the six children of Levi and Louisa Baker Nalley.

Mrs. Haney was a life-long resident of Woodsfield. She was a member of the Methodist Church and the Goddard Bible Class.

Surviving are her husband, William F. Haney; one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Mary H.) Stover of Hollywood, California; four sons, Dr. J. A. Haney, of Hopemont, W. Va,; Dr. F. C. Haney, of Waynesburg, Pa.; and Leland Haney of the home; and three grandchildren; Mrs. Wm. Basso, of Warren; Charles William Haney, of Columbus, and James Haney, Jr., of London, England; also a large number of nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Sylvester and John Nalley and three sisters, Mrs. Melissa Smith, Mrs. Virginia Fisher and Mrs. Mary Ellen Turner.

Funeral services were held at the Bauer and Turner funeral home Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, with Rev. Charles D. Reed officiating. Interment was in Oaklawn cemetery.

Wife, mother, neighbor, friend—these four meaningful words describe accurately the life and interest of Mrs. Haney. Whatever of activity, effort or even sacrifice was required of her or suggested to her, for the welfare or comfort of those near to her or even the passing stranger, she gave and served as only a good mother and neighbor can and does.

Not only many of our present residents, but many of those who formerly resided here remember her most kindly and mourn her passing to that Home not made with hands.

DEATH: Eli Thaddedus Henthorn died on 22 Jun 1955 at the age of 87 years in New Martinsville, Wetzel, WV of a cerebro vascular accident.  His father was not recorded and his mother was listed as Mary Long.  He had been widowed. Reported on page 76-a of the General Index and Register of Deaths - Wetzel County, WV.


OBITUARY: Eli Thaddeus Henthorn Dies
Eli Thaddeus (Tad) Henthorn retired farmer formerly of Bearsville, Tyler County, passed away at 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, [1955] at Wetzel County hospital following a stroke suffered three weeks ago.

He was born in Tyler County, [WV], September 21, 1868 and spent his entire life in the county.  He was married to Helen Riggs December 11, 1899, who preceded him in death May 11, 1920.

To this union six children were born:  Georgia Estlack, New Martinsville; Mary Ash, Joseph Mills; Max C., DuBois, Wyoming; Clint R. and Frederick both of Weirton.  A son, Glen, preceded him in death.  He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Fairview church, near Bearsville, [WV] with burial in the cemetery there.  McCullough's funeral directors in Pennsboro were in charge of arrangements.

OBITUARY:
Carl Riggs Henthorn, 62, of Rural Route No. 5, 3160 127th Ave., Allegan, Mich., died Tuesday [12 May 1992] at Allegan General Hospital.  He was a heavy construction equipment repair mechanic for the Christian Oil Co., Allegan, and a Protestant.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Batchelder Henthorn; two sons, Garth and Drew, both of Allegan; three daughters, Mrs. Dick (Kenda) Levett and Kyla Jacobs, both of Allegan, and Mrs. Al (Keena) Davis of Midlothian, Va., his mother, Pearl Ash Henthorn of Steubenville; a sister, Mrs. James M. (Patsy) Saffel of New Cumberland; four grandchildren, a step grandchild.

There will be no visitation.  Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Wings of Hope Hospice, Inc., 189 S. 10th St., Plainwell, Mich. 49080.  Local arrangements by Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home, Weirton, [WV].

Clarice Vivian (Eller) Stanley

It is with sadness that I report the death of Clarice Vivian (Eller) Stanley on 23 Dec 2014 (probably at Martins Ferry, Belmont Co., OH).  She was born on 8 Nov 1923 in Taylors Ridge, Marshall Co., WV a daughter of Berrell and Florence Arlena (Blake) Eller.

I had the privilege of meeting Clarice Stanley at one of the Yoho Family Reunions in New Martinsville, WV. We went on to collaborate on the compilation of an updated version of the Rine / Ryan family history that she produced from the papers of Dorothy (Rine) Brown.

The obituary appeared in the 26 December 2014 issue of The Intelligence - Wheeling News Register.
