Lee Allen Hinthorne may have been born in Davenport, Scott, IA. His son, Frank, so stated on birth certificate of his sister, Margaret Laura Hinthorne, on 23 Jul 1942 when he certified a delayed birth certificate for her. The obituary gave the birth place as McLean Co., IL.

Robert Hinthorne wrote: There is a conflict about where Lee Allen Hinthorne was born. His son, Frank, made a declaration (witness) before a Notary Public that his father was born in Davenport, Iowa and that the birthplace of his mother, Laura Sophorina Paul, was Jeffersonville, Ohio. The cause for this declaration was to obtain a Birth Certificate for Frank Hinthorne's sister, Margaret Laura Hinthorne, dated 29 May 1942.


Robert continues: Previous to finding the above cited document there was no other evidence to prove where either Lee Allen or Laura Sophorine (Paul) Hinthorne were born. It was generally believed that Lee Allen Hinthorne was born near Towanda in Lexington Township, McLean Co., IL. It was believed taht Laura Sophorina was born in Cincinnati, Ohio.

BIOGRAPHY: Lee Allen Hinthorne
Lee was a building contractor. He was a 33rd Degree Mason.
The Lee Allen Hinthorne family lived at Towanda, IL before moving, in 1884, to Carlinville, IL. Towanda was near Bloomington, IL about 230 miles north of Carlinville. The move south was made in their covered wagon and took them 10 days to complete.

Frank Hinthorne, (father of Helen (Hinthorne) Lindquist who wrote this item) was 10 years old at the time. He was born on 6 Mar 1874. He told the family of the wonderful trip they had, even with all their hardships. They would make campfires during the day to cook their food and would sleep at night in a farmer's barn, if one was near, or make a campsite.

Lee Hinthorne was a Civil War veteran and a 33rd degree Mason. His picture still remained in the Masonic Hall at Carlinville, IL (1980).

He owned Lee Hinthorne and Company House Raising and moved houses. His work also included building foundations in stone, cement and brick. He dug cellars, cisterns and did repair work. He owned the first lumber yard and saw mill. He did repair work on the Macoupin County Courthouse in Carlinville, IL. His two sons, Frank and Elmer, helped him in his business. His grandson, William Hinthorne, Frank's son, got his finger cut off at the sawmill, which kept him from entering the First World War.

When Lee Hinthorne died, 11 Nov 1911, he left his business to his second son, Frank.

OBITUARY: Death of Lee Allen Hinthorn
Lee Allen Hinthorn an old resident of Carlinville, IL and veteran of the Civil War, died Saturday, November 11, 1911.

An old and highly respected resident of this city and veteran of the Civil War in the person of Lee Allen Hinthorn, died at his home in this city at 332 Plum St., Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock.
Mr. Hinthorn was aged 66 years and 3 days. He had been failing in health for a number of months and while it was not generally known among his friends that his condition was serious, yet his family knew such to be the case.

Lee Allen Hinthorn was born in McLean County, Illinois on Nov. 8th, 1845. In that county he grew to young manhood, where he was married to Miss Laura Paul. To this union seven children were born, six of whom are now living and are as follows:

Frank Hinthorn, Mrs. Maude Arnold and Mrs. Ethel Pursey of Carlinville; Mrs. Eddie Fay of Alton; Mrs. Margaret Gay of Springfield; and Elmer Hinthorn of East St. Louis. The widow also survives her husband. In addition, the deceased is survived by one brother, Jefferson Hinthorn, of Topeka, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. Ellen Willis of McLean County.

Mr. Hinthorn has been a resident of Carlinville for many years, during which time he followed the occupation of house moving and construction work. Until his health failed he was always busy with his work and was respected by all who knew him.

In May 1863, he joined Company I, 145 Illinois Infantry. He served two years in that memorable contest, the Civil War. Since that conflict Mr. Hinthorn has been a constant sufferer from a wound received in one of his legs while in service. This wound had never healed and during the long period of time since the close of this war, Mr. Hinthorn has suffered from it. This fact was not known to many, except to a few of his intimate friends. It was a serious handicap, yet, seldom was he known to complain. He served his country faithfully and honorably. His demise will be a source of extreme regret to those who knew him best.

Funeral services were held from this home on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. C.C. Brown, of the Holiness Mission officiated. There was a large attendance by those who wished to pay their last tribute of respect. Interment was in the city cemetery. The Odd Fellows and Dan Messick Post G.A.R. officiated at the grave.

OBITUARY: Deaths and Funerals - Rev. Mae Ward Ex-Missionary

The Rev. Mae Yoho Ward, 83, Foxwood Springs, Mo., formerly of Indianapolis, a retired executive of the Christian Church(Disciples of Christ), died yesterday in a Kansas City hospital.

Rev. Ward lived here more than 40 years, moving to Foxwood Springs 15 months ago.

Her 35-year service with the Disciples of Christ included representing the organization's United Christian Missionary Society as a missionary in Argentina. She was also executive secretary of the department of Latin America and the Caribbean and executive chairman of the division of world mission.

She was vice president of United Christian Missionary Society from 1961 to 1967, when she retired. She then was executive director of educational personnel for the Disciples of Christ's board of higher education.

Until recently, she continued to speak at churches across the country.

Rev. Ward served on numerous committees during her career, including the Disciples of Christ's restructure commission and committees for the National Council of Churches. She served on the first NCC committee to travel to California in support of migrant grape workers and helped register black voters in Mississippi in 1964.

She was a consultant at Evanston (Ill.) Assembly of World Churches and a delegate to New Delhi Assembly of the council. She served seven years on the WCC's theological education committee.
A graduate of Bethany College in West Virginia and Yale Divinity School, Rev. Ward also studied at Vanderbilt and Indiana universities. She received honorary doctorates from Culver Stockton College, Drake University and Bethany College.

"We have had no more effective or influential woman in our history." said Diane Steffer, a staff member of the Disciple of Christ's Division of Overseas Ministries, of Rev. Ward.

Memorial contributions may be made to Oberlin School, Jamaica, in care of the Division of Overseas Ministries, 222 S. Downey, Indianapolis, Ind. 46219.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Downey Avenue Christian Church, where she was an active member many years and held several offices.

Richmond, John J.

John J. Richmond, 77, of 501 10th St Moundsville [WV], died Wednesday, March 13, [probably 1996, REH] in Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glendale [WV]. He was born Oct 20, 1918 at Glen Easton. He was self-employed in the petroleum industry and a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Moundsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Edna Miller Richmond.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn June Mills Richmond; a son, John Edward of Moundsville; two daughters, Mrs John (Verna) Mallicote of Tampa, FL, and Donna Ingram of Rogers, Ark; a brother, Bert of Moundsville; five sisters, Ruth Phillips, Maryetta Vucelick and Doris Richmond, all of Moundsville, Pearl Bierman of Centralis, IL, and Dorothy Yoder of Napa, CA, eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be held at 10 am Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 1601 First St, Moundsville. Arrangements by Altmeyer Funeral Home, Lutes-Kirby-Vance Chapel, 110 Grant Ave, Moundsville.

OBITUARY: John M. Henthorn, born 26 May 1838 in Monroe Co., OH, died 16 Apr 1909, 79 years, 10 months, 20 days. He married Lidia A. Kent when 20 years old. They had 12 children, 4 sons and 3 daughters survive. Five children and his wife died previously. He spent all of his life in Monroe Co. except 1 year (11 years ?) in Tyler Co., WV. 2 brothers, and 7 children and 4 grandchildren. He was buried in West Union Cemetery. BIOGRAPHY: Synopsis
He was married by Rev. Lemon Dotson, Minister of the Gospel.

He worked as a telegraph operator for the B&O Railroad Co. He worked until 1935, 25 years. He was originally a brakeman. He fell under a train and lost his right leg. He used a wooden leg attached to the shoulder with a harness. It remained painful throughout his life.

He lived at Glovers Gap, near Mannington, WV. He lived at New Martinsville, WV from 1930 to 1934. He later lived at Jacksonbug. He liked to camp and frequently went to Canada to fish. He took his family to the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago. He like to tell stores to the kids. He purchased a new car each year.

He died of carcinoma of signoid (lower colon cancer).

DEATH: Ivin Floid Henthorn died on 17 Dec 1936 at the age of 48 years, 3 months, 12 days at Porters Falls, Wetzel Co., WV of carcinoma of Signoid. His parents were Richard L. OBITUARY:
Ivin Floid Henthorne, telegraph operator for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company for 25 years died at his home in Porters Falls, [WV] at 11:40 p.m. last Thursday. He was 48 years old.

Funeral services were held from the Wharton Funeral Home at 2:30 o'clock last Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Mozena of Marietta officiating. Interment was made in the ...view cemetery, New Martinsville. Rev. Allen Fields of Pine Grove assisted with the funeral services.

A son of the late Richard and Emma Mozena Henthorne, he was born in Wood County, [WV], Sept. 5, 1888. He was a member of the Christian Church.

His widow, Lillie Liston Henthorne, survives, in addition to two sons, Raymon and Dale, two daughters, Helen and Betty, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Tice and Mrs. George Flynn, both of Parkersburg. One grandson also survives.

RECOLLECTIONS: At one time, 27 Nov 1970, Mr. A.E. Henthorn, grandson of Peter King Henthorn, lived at: Box 157, Sistersville, WV 26175, when he wrote a letter about family history to Catherine Foreaker Fedorchak, who wrote about family history in the Woodsfield, OH paper and in several books.

He stated that he was the grandson of Peter King Henthorn (1857-1937).

He said in the letter, "I am 61 years of age, born and raised in the foothills of the Applachians here in Tyler County, West Virginia, the second of five sons and one daughter born to George Bruce Henthorn and Mettie Ethel (Slider) Henthorn. My paternal grandparents were, Peter King Henthorn and Liva Belle (Buck) Henthorn."

OBITUARY: Arvil Elwood (Chip) Henthorn, 78, former resident of Paden City, [WV] and past president of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Sistersville, [WV], died May 5, [1987] in Tucson, Arizona, [after] prolonged illness.

Henthorn was born on April 27, 1909, at Buck Run in Tyler County, [WV], a son of the late George Bruce and Mattie Slider Henthorn.

Henthorn began his association with First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Sistersville on June 12, 1933, when the institution was founded, and served as president of that institution for 13 years. Under Henthorn's management and guidance First Federal became one of the leading financial institutions of its type in West Virginia. Henthorn had remained on the Board of Directors prior to his death.

He was past member of the Elks and the Sistersville Country Club. An ardent sportsman, Henthorn also was a member of the Izaak Walton League and other conservation organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Ora Henthorn; two daughters, Donna Jean Spencer, of Lake Side, California, and Elizabeth Huerta of Tucson, Arizona; eight grandchildren and three grandsons; one brother, George Berl Henthorn of Paden City; one sister, Helen Virginia Bunney, Arlington, VA.

Private services were conducted in Tucson, AZ.

Williams, Andrew Howard

WILLIAMS; Andrew [Howard] (Aitchmoon), aged 49 years, and of Eccleston, [England] passed away suddenly, at home on 4th April 2009.

Much loved son of Eileen and the late Ronald Williams . A loving brother to Martin, and a wonderful friend.

He will be very sadly missed yet fondly remembered by all his devoted family, many friends and everyone whose life he touched with his warm, generous nature.

A celebration of Andrew's life is to take place at St Helens Crematorium Chapel on Thursday 16th April 2009 at 1.00pm followed by interment at St Helens Cemetery.

Floral tributes will be gratefully received.
